ESD holiday payment schedule - Will my unemployment deposit still arrive on Christmas?

I just started receiving unemployment benefits last month after being laid off from my warehouse job. My payments have been coming through on Mondays like clockwork, but I realized Christmas falls on a Monday this year (2025). Does anyone know if ESD still processes payments on holidays? Will I get my money on Tuesday instead? Really need to budget correctly since I'm trying to make sure I can cover my January rent.

holidays mess everything up! same thing happnd to me last year with new years. payment was late by TWO days and my landlord was NOT happy. ESD doesnt process anything on federal holidays from what i remember

Two days?! That's really stressing me out. I can't be late on rent again.

ESD follows the standard federal holiday schedule, so no processing happens on Christmas Day. However, the system is automated, so while the actual payment processing won't happen on the holiday, it should process on the next business day (Tuesday). Most people see their deposits arrive Wednesday morning when this happens. This is different from the weekly claim filing - you can still file your weekly claim on a holiday since that's through the online system, but the payment processing is what gets delayed.

This is correct! I worked at a bank for 12 yrs and all ACH transactions (which is what ESD uses) are delayed by holidays. Its not just ESD but ALL electronic payments.

Ugh, the whole holiday delay thing drove me CRAZY last year!!! I called ESD like 25 times trying to figure out where my money was (it was Presidents Day I think??). I kept getting the stupid automated system or it would just disconnect me after waiting FOREVER. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 But yeah, your payment will probably hit Wednesday morning. That's been my experience with holiday weeks.

is that service legit? sounds like a scam tbh

Not a scam! It's just a call-back service that holds your place in line. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on constantly.

I've been on unemployment for 8 months now (manufacturing layoff), and I can tell you the pattern with holidays is super consistent. Claims processing doesn't happen on federal holidays, so: 1. Your FILING can still happen on the holiday through eServices 2. Your PROCESSING will happen the next business day 3. Your DEPOSIT usually arrives the day after processing So Monday holiday = Tuesday processing = Wednesday deposit in most cases. Sometimes it can hit Tuesday night depending on your bank. Hope that helps!

Thank you for breaking it down like this! I'll make sure to let my landlord know there might be a slight delay. Really appreciate the clear explanation.

That's unusual. Payment dates should be fairly consistent unless there are issues with your claim that trigger manual review. Have you called ESD to ask about the inconsistent deposit schedule? It could be related to when you're submitting your weekly claim or if there are adjudication issues.

Christmas is always crazy with unemployment! When I was on standby last winter my payment was delayed almost a week because of "system maintenance" over the holiday. ESD claimed it was normal but I think they just had skeleton crew and everything backed up. Just file your weekly claim as early as possible that week!!!

That's not a normal experience - must have been some unusual circumstances last year. System maintenance announcements are usually posted on the ESD website in advance, and holiday delays are typically only 1-2 days at most.

does anyone know if we get extra $ for the holiday? my old job used to pay holiday pay even if you didnt work that day

Unfortunately, unemployment doesn't provide holiday pay. Benefits are calculated based on your base year wages and remain the same regardless of holidays. Only wages from actual work would have holiday differentials.

Looks like Wednesday is the consensus. I'll make sure to budget for that delay. I also had another question - do we still need to do the three job search activities during Christmas week?

Yes, you still need to complete your three job search activities during holiday weeks, even Christmas week. The job search requirements don't change for holidays. However, you can count job search preparation activities (like updating your resume or attending a WorkSource workshop) if businesses are closed for the holiday.

Same situation here! I got laid off from my retail job in November and this is my first Christmas on unemployment. The uncertainty about payment timing is stressful when you're already stretching every dollar. Based on what everyone's saying, it sounds like Wednesday is the safe bet for deposits. I'm going to contact my landlord today to give them a heads up about the potential delay - better to be proactive than scrambling later. Thanks for asking this question, it's helping a lot of us plan ahead!

You're so right about being proactive with landlords! I learned that lesson the hard way during my first month on unemployment when I didn't communicate about a potential delay. My property manager was way more understanding when I gave them advance notice the next time. It's tough being in this situation during the holidays, but at least we have this community to help figure things out together. Hope your landlord is understanding too!

I'm in a similar boat - just started getting benefits in February after losing my job at a local grocery store. From what I've experienced so far and reading all these responses, it seems like the Wednesday deposit timeline is pretty reliable for holiday weeks. One thing that's helped me is setting up text alerts through my bank so I know exactly when the deposit hits instead of constantly checking my account. Also, if you're really tight on budget like I am, some food banks and community centers have special holiday assistance programs running through December that might help bridge any gap from the payment delay. Stay strong - we'll get through this!
