Will PA UC benefits be delayed for Columbus Day 2025? Payment schedule question

Just realized tomorrow is Columbus Day and wondering if my unemployment payment will still be processed or if it'll be delayed because of the holiday? Anyone know if PA UC considers this a bank holiday? I normally get my payment deposited on Tuesday but I'm not sure how holidays affect the schedule. Really need this payment to come through for rent. Thanks!

Columbus Day DOES delay payments in PA. its a federal holiday so the banks dont process anything. i learned this the hard way last year when i was counting on my money. expect it Wednesday instead of Tuesday

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for letting me know. Is it just a one day delay usually?

Actually, this depends on your payment method. If you have direct deposit, yes, Columbus Day will delay it by one business day since banks are closed. However, if you use the Money Network debit card, sometimes the funds are still loaded on the regular schedule but you just can't access them until the next day. The PA UC system still processes claims on holidays, but the actual money transfer is what gets delayed.

I have direct deposit to my checking account. So I should expect it Wednesday then?

I HATE how PA UC never clearly explains these holiday delays!!! They should send everyone a text or email warning about payment delays. Some of us have bills due and can't just wait an extra day or two. Last year my landlord charged me a late fee because of a holiday delay and UC wouldn't do ANYTHING about it.

ikr? would it kill them to put a notice on the website or something

I've dealt with this every holiday since I started claiming. Here's the official schedule: payments are delayed by one day for each banking holiday that falls in the processing window. So yes, expect your payment on Wednesday instead of Tuesday this week. If you ever need to reach someone at UC to confirm payment status or ask about delays, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I wasted days trying to get through on the regular phone lines until someone here suggested it. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I needed to fix a payment issue.

Thanks for the detailed info! I might need that service if my payment doesn't show up Wednesday.

Just to add some extra information - Columbus Day (now also called Indigenous Peoples' Day) is one of the federal reserve holidays that affects banking transactions. The complete list for 2025 that will affect PA UC payments is: - New Year's Day (January 1) - Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20) - Presidents Day (February 17) - Memorial Day (May 26) - Juneteenth (June 19) - Independence Day (July 4) - Labor Day (September 1) - Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 13) - Veterans Day (November 11) - Thanksgiving (November 27) - Christmas (December 25) It's good to mark these on your calendar so you can plan ahead for payment delays.

just a heads up - sometimes the system shows the payment as "issued" on the holiday but it wont actually hit your bank until the next day. dont panic if u see that status and dont have money yet

That's good to know! I'll try not to freak out if I see that status change.

To answer your follow-up question - yes, it's typically just a one-day delay for each banking holiday. So for Columbus Day, expect payment on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. However, if there are multiple holidays in a week (like during Christmas/New Year's), it can push things back further.

Appreciate the confirmation! I can make it work if it's just one day.

For future reference, you can usually check the PA UC website under "Payment Information" to see if there are any scheduled delays posted. They don't always advertise it well, but sometimes they'll put a notice up a few days before major holidays. Also, if you're really tight on funds, some banks will let you set up overdraft protection or a small line of credit to cover situations like this where payments get delayed by a day or two. Might be worth looking into so you don't have to stress about rent being late due to holiday delays.

That's really helpful advice about checking the PA UC website and setting up overdraft protection! I never thought to look for notices there. Do you know if they usually post those holiday delay notices pretty far in advance, or is it more like last minute? I'd love to be able to plan better for these situations in the future.
