Will ny unemployment payments be delayed for Columbus Day next week?

I've got bills coming up next week and I'm counting on my unemployment deposit to hit on time. Anyone know if Columbus Day (October 9) is gonna delay payments? I know banks are closed but not sure if that means the ny unemployment system is down too. Last time there was a holiday my payment was 2 days late and i nearly missed rent. Just trying to plan ahead this time instead of panicking at the last minute.

Columbus Day does delay unemployment payments, usually by one day. Since it's a federal holiday, banks don't process ACH transfers on that day. I've been on unemployment since June and noticed this pattern with previous holidays. Best to plan for it to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday instead of Monday.

Thanks for confirming. Ugh this sucks, my landlord is already on my case about being late last month. Guess I'll have to call and explain the situation again 😫

Actually it depends on your bank too. Some banks will still show the pending deposit even on holidays, then it posts the next business day. So you might see it pending on Monday but not available till Tuesday.

No problem! And yeah, I'd definitely let your landlord know ahead of time. Some of them can be understanding if you communicate in advance rather than after it's already late.

I was in a similar situation last month waiting for a payment before Labor Day. After hours of trying to call the ny unemployment office to confirm, I ended up using claimyr.com to get connected to a real person. They confirmed that yes, holidays delay payments by 1-2 business days. Talking to an agent got my questions answered in minutes instead of stressing for days. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true after spending literally DAYS on hold with unemployment.

It absolutely does! I was skeptical too but when you've been on hold for 3+ hours and getting nowhere, it's worth it. The service just waits on hold for you and calls when there's a human. Saved my sanity tbh.

another service trying to profit off desperate people?? unemployment system is already a nightmare 🙄

I get the skepticism, but it's not like that. Think about how much your time is worth - I wasted two full days trying to get through before using this. Got a call back in about 40 mins and fixed my issue. claimyr.com literally saved me from missing a car payment.

omg I've been through this so many times with holidays. Pro tip: if your payment normally hits on Monday, expect it Wednesday after a Monday holiday. Even though the website says 1 day delay, its always been 2 days for me 🤦‍♀️

Anybody else notice that like EVERY SINGLE MONTH theres some holiday or "system maintenance" that delays payments? Almost feels intentional at this point...like they WANT us to be late on bills.

100% this! I've started keeping a calendar just for tracking when I'll ACTUALLY get paid vs when they say I will. System is designed to make us fail.

Conspiracy theories dont help anyone. The unemployment system uses the same ACH network as every other financial institution. Federal holidays affect ALL banking transactions, not just unemployment.

Call it what u want but after 7 months on unemployment I've learned the hard way that nothing ever comes when they say it will. Just speaking facts 💯

Here's what I've learned after being on ny unemployment for the past 9 months: 1) Always expect holiday delays of 1-2 business days 2) Their website NEVER shows accurate info during holidays 3) Direct deposit is ALWAYS faster than the debit card 4) If you're desperate to talk to someone, claimyr.com is literally the only reliable way I've found to get a human on the phone 5) Screenshot EVERYTHING - payment confirmations, certifications, etc. These delays mess with everyone's finances, but at least now you can plan for it. I've had to adjust all my bill due dates by a few days to account for these constant delays. Also, pro tip: many utility companies and landlords will work with you if you call BEFORE the payment is due, rather than after. Most offer a grace period if you communicate.

This is super helpful, thanks! I've only been on unemployment since August so still learning all these unwritten rules 😩

That claimyr thing really works? I've spent literally 3 days trying to get someone on the phone about backpay.

Yeah, I was skeptical too but it works. I used it twice - once for ID verification issues and once for missing payments. Both times I got through to a person within an hour instead of days of redialing. claimyr.com saved me from eviction honestly.

I asked this exact question last year lol. Yes the Columbus Day holiday will delay payments, but only by 1 day usually. NY unemployment still processes claims on holidays, but the BANKS don't process the transfers until the next business day.

Why is nobody talking about how ridiculous it is that we're still celebrating Columbus Day as a federal holiday? The dude literally committed genocide but sure, let's delay people's unemployment benefits to honor him 🤡

sir this is a wendys

I mean ur not wrong but I just need to know when my money is coming lmao

Fair enough, I just get triggered by this every year. But to answer the actual question - yes, expect a delay of 1-2 days whenever there's a federal holiday.

Mei Wong

called the ny unemployment helpline and after TWO HOURS on hold they told me that yes, Columbus Day will delay payments by one business day. So if you normally get paid Monday, expect Tuesday. If Tuesday, expect Wednesday, etc. Hope this helps someone else not waste their day on hold!

TWO hours? You got lucky lol. I called 17 times last week and never got through 😭

I know right? I actually tried using that claimyr.com service someone mentioned here before. They called and stayed on hold then connected me when a real person picked up. Saved me from the hold music hell.

protip: if u have cashapp or chime, they sometimes release the pending deposits early even on holidays. Saved my butt during Memorial Day when regular banks were delayed.

OMG WHY IS THE NY UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM SO BROKEN??? In what universe should a stupid holiday delay people getting money they need for FOOD AND SHELTER? Sorry for yelling but I am at my wits end with this system.

0 coins

Its not even the unemployment system, its the entire banking system. ACH transfers don't process on federal holidays. Same reason your paycheck would be delayed if payday fell on a holiday.

0 coins

yeah but this is 2023, we have computers and the internet now. there's literally no reason this cant be automated to account for holidays. We shouldn't have to plan our entire financial lives around random holidays.

Same boat happened during July 4th. My payment was delayed by TWO days not one like they claimed. Best advice is to call your billers ahead of time and explain. Most will give you an extension if you ask BEFORE the due date (not after).

i don't understand y everyone is so confused by this? federal holidays = banks closed = no direct deposits processed that day. its not rocket science ppl lol

Some of us haven't been on unemployment before and are learning how the system works. No need to be condescending.

sorry didnt mean to sound like a jerk. just seen this same question like every single holiday for the past 2 years im on this sub

I remember when I first started collecting NY unemployment benefits, I was so confused by all the delays and website issues. The system seems designed to be difficult on purpose! For Columbus Day specifically, expect a 1-day delay. And FYI - their online system will probably show incorrect info on the holiday itself, so don't panic if it looks weird on Monday.
