Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. NYS Department of Labor unemployment eligibility if I quit my job - need honest advice

I'm in a really tough spot with my current job and honestly considering quitting. The work environment has become completely toxic - my supervisor constantly yells at employees, we're expected to work unpaid overtime regularly, and I've developed anxiety just thinking about going to work. My question is: if I quit am I eligible for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor? I know there's something about 'good cause' but I'm not sure what that actually means or how to prove it. Has anyone successfully gotten UI benefits after quitting? I really need to know before I make this decision because I can't afford to be without income for months.

THIS SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! Why should someone have to stay in an abusive work situation just to qualify for benefits they paid into?? The whole 'good cause' thing is just another way for them to deny claims and save money. Sorry you're dealing with this OP but don't expect much help from NYS Department of Labor.

I actually went through something similar last year. Had a boss who was making the workplace unbearable and I was having panic attacks. I documented everything for about 6 weeks - kept a notebook, saved emails, even recorded some conversations (legally in NY). When I finally quit and filed for unemployment, NYS Department of Labor approved my claim after about a month of investigation. The key really is the documentation. Don't quit on impulse - build your case first.

NYS Department of Labor weekly claim certification - what was the total amount spent on social security benefits affecting my UI claim?

I'm filling out my weekly claim certification and there's a question about other benefits received. I got some social security payments last month but I'm not sure what total amount to report to NYS Department of Labor. Does anyone know if I need to include the full amount or just what affects my unemployment benefits? My claim has been pending adjudication for 2 weeks and I don't want to mess this up by reporting the wrong amount.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS! Why can't they just have clear instructions about what amounts to report instead of making us guess and risk getting overpayment notices later!

NYS Department of Labor claim denied due to technological unemployment - need help understanding this

I got laid off from my warehouse job because they installed automated sorting machines that replaced half our crew. When I filed for unemployment, NYS Department of Labor initially approved my claim but then sent me a letter saying I'm disqualified because of 'technological unemployment.' I've never heard this term before and don't understand why automation at my workplace would affect my eligibility. Has anyone dealt with this? I thought any layoff qualified you for benefits as long as it wasn't your fault.

This is EXACTLY the kind of bureaucratic nonsense that makes dealing with unemployment so frustrating! They'll find any excuse to deny legitimate claims. Technology displacement should make you MORE eligible for benefits, not less, since you need time to retrain for new skills.

How long does it take to get approved for unemployment in NYS - still waiting after 2 weeks

I submitted my initial unemployment application through the NYS Department of Labor website two weeks ago and I'm getting really anxious about when I'll hear back. My account shows the claim is under review but there's no timeline or anything. I lost my job at a retail store when they had to close our location permanently. I've been checking my account every day but the status hasn't changed. Does anyone know how long the approval process usually takes? I'm starting to worry I did something wrong on the application.

The whole system is so slow and frustrating!! I waited almost a MONTH for my approval and then they still had issues with my payments. NYS Department of Labor really needs to get their act together.

Two weeks is still normal range. I remember being super stressed too but mine came through right at the 3 week mark. Just keep checking and definitely start those weekly certifications!

I've been receiving unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor since September and just realized I might need to report this income on my taxes. I received about $8,200 total in UI payments last year. Do I need to file a tax return for unemployment benefits? I'm really confused about whether this counts as taxable income and if there are any forms I need from NYS Department of Labor.

this whole system is ridiculous, they make you jump through hoops to get unemployment then tax you on it like its some kind of bonus income when you're already struggling financially

If unemployment was your only income and it was under $13,850 (the 2024 standard deduction), you're not required to file federal taxes. But you might want to anyway because you could get money back if you had taxes withheld. For New York state, the threshold is different so check with a tax professional.
