Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. From what I've seen, the unemployment rates can be misleading though. Like yeah Nassau County might have low unemployment but good luck affording rent there on unemployment benefits! You might want to look at job growth rates too, not just current unemployment numbers.

Wait, are you sure you qualify though? If you got fired for cause or quit voluntarily, you might not be eligible. Store closure should be fine since that's no fault of your own, but just double-check the reason on your termination paperwork.
It was definitely a layoff due to store closure. The whole chain is shutting down locations. Should have the paperwork from HR tomorrow.

wait hold on, if you got fired for performance can you even get unemployment?? I thought you had to be laid off not terminated??
You can still get benefits if you were fired, as long as it wasn't for misconduct. Performance issues usually don't count as misconduct unless it was willful or you refused to follow direct orders. NYS Department of Labor will investigate and make the determination.
Yeah that's what I'm hoping, I really don't think it was misconduct, more like they wanted to get rid of me for complaining

just go to ny.gov and look for unemployment, its not that complicated people make it sound harder than it is
UGH the NYS Department of Labor system is such a nightmare. I applied three times before I figured out I was making errors on the employment history section. Make sure you have EXACT dates and employer addresses or they'll kick your application back and you'll have to start over. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up.
I feel your pain - had similar issues with my application getting rejected for minor date discrepancies. The key is being super precise with your employment information and double-checking everything before you submit.

•No, that's not how it works. If you quit without good cause, you might be disqualified from that job's wages, but if you work enough at a new job, you can establish new eligibility based on those wages.

Been there! I was so worried about getting disqualified too. The main thing is being honest on your application. If you were laid off due to company restructuring like you said, that's not misconduct. The work search requirements are probably what trips up most people once they start collecting - you have to document your job search activities every week.
