NYS Department of Labor claim shows disqualified status - what does this mean for unemployment benefits?
My unemployment claim was approved last month but now when I check my account it says 'disqualified' next to my most recent weekly claim. I haven't done anything different - still filing every week, still looking for work, haven't started any new job. What does disqualified mean exactly? Does this affect my whole claim or just that one week? I'm really confused and worried because I depend on these benefits to pay rent.

Disqualified usually means NYS Department of Labor found an issue with your eligibility for that specific week or your entire claim. Common reasons include not meeting work search requirements, refusing suitable work, earning too much money, or not being available for work. Check if you received any correspondence in your online account - they should explain the specific reason for the disqualification.

•I checked and there's no messages or notices in my account. Should I be getting something explaining why?

same thing happened to me back in September! turned out I forgot to log one of my job searches that week and they caught it during a random audit. took forever to get through to someone to fix it

•How did you get it resolved? I've been trying to call but can't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor.

•honestly I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on

You need to appeal the disqualification immediately if you think it's wrong. You only have 30 days from when the determination was made. Log into your my.ny.gov account and look for an appeal option. If you can't find it, call the NYS Department of Labor appeals line directly.

•THIS!! Don't wait around hoping it fixes itself. I waited too long once and missed my appeal window. Had to go without benefits for 6 weeks while they sorted it out.

The unemployment system is such a mess. They disqualify people for the smallest things and then make it impossible to reach anyone to explain what happened. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and it's like they don't want to pay anyone benefits.

•I feel you on this. The whole system seems designed to trip people up and deny claims whenever possible.

Could be a mistake too - their computer system glitches all the time. I had a week show as disqualified once and it turned out to be an error on their end that got fixed automatically the next week.
