What does disqualified week mean for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been filing my weekly claims for Washington ESD unemployment and noticed that one of my weeks shows as 'disqualified' in my account. I'm really confused about what this means - does it affect my whole claim or just that one week? I worked a few hours that week but reported it like I always do. Will I lose all my benefits or can I appeal this? Has anyone else had a disqualified week and what did you do about it?

A disqualified week means Washington ESD determined you weren't eligible for benefits for that specific week only. It doesn't affect your entire claim, just that one week. Common reasons include earning too much money, not being available for work, or not meeting job search requirements. You should have received a determination letter explaining the specific reason.

•I haven't gotten any letter yet but I'll check my mail more carefully. So it won't mess up my future weeks?

•No, future weeks aren't affected as long as you meet the requirements going forward. Each week is evaluated separately.

I had this happen when I earned too much in part-time work one week. The disqualification was just for that week where my earnings exceeded the weekly benefit amount plus the $5 deductible. You can definitely appeal if you think it's wrong.

•How much were you allowed to earn before getting disqualified? I only worked like 10 hours that week.

•It depends on your weekly benefit amount. You can earn up to your WBA plus $5 before getting disqualified. If your WBA is $200, you can earn up to $205.

Had the same issue trying to figure out why my week got disqualified. Spent hours on hold with Washington ESD trying to get through. Finally used Claimyr to actually reach an agent who explained it was because I didn't complete my job search activities that week. The service at claimyr.com helped me skip the phone queue completely.

•How does that Claimyr thing work? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days about my disqualified week.

•They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Basically handles the calling for you so you don't waste time on hold.

UGH this system is so frustrating! They disqualify you for the tiniest things and then make it impossible to get anyone on the phone to explain WHY. I had a disqualified week because apparently I didn't report my job search correctly even though I did everything they asked.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you end up appealing it?

Yara Khoury
•Yeah I appealed and won but it took forever. The determination letter had the wrong information about what I supposedly didn't do.

For job search related disqualifications, make sure you're logging your activities in WorkSourceWA. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they need to be documented properly. Each activity needs employer name, position, date, and method of contact.

•Wait, it has to be in WorkSourceWA? I've been keeping my own log this whole time.

CyberSiren
•Yes, Washington ESD requires job search activities to be logged in WorkSourceWA. Your personal log won't count for their verification.

UPDATE: I found the determination letter in my online account under 'Notices'. It says I was disqualified because I wasn't 'able and available' that week. But I was available! I just had a doctor's appointment one day.

CyberSiren
•A single doctor's appointment shouldn't disqualify you unless it prevented you from accepting work. Did you mark that you were unavailable for work on your weekly claim?

Ava Thompson
•I might have accidentally clicked yes when it asked if I was unavailable for work any day that week. I thought the appointment counted.

That's a common mistake! Doctor appointments don't make you unavailable for work unless they take up the entire day or you physically can't work. You should definitely appeal this - it sounds like an error on your part when filing.

•How do I appeal? Is there a deadline?

Miguel Alvarez
•You have 30 days from the date on the determination letter. File online through your Washington ESD account or mail the appeal form.

same thing happened to me last month, turned out i marked the wrong box on my weekly claim. these forms are so confusing!

Ava Thompson
•Did you appeal it? I'm worried about messing up the appeal too.

•yeah i appealed online and it got overturned pretty quick since it was obviously a mistake

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your disqualification before appealing, I'd recommend checking out Claimyr again. When I had my issue, the agent was able to look at my claim and explain exactly what triggered the disqualification. Saved me from filing an unnecessary appeal.

•Is that service actually legit? Seems too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach Washington ESD normally.

Zainab Yusuf
•Yeah it's legit, they don't ask for any personal info or passwords. Just helps you get through to an actual Washington ESD agent.

I've had multiple disqualified weeks and it's always been something different. One week for earnings, another for job search, another for availability. Each week really is separate which is good and bad.

Ava Thompson
•That's actually reassuring that it doesn't affect other weeks. Did you appeal all of them?

Connor O'Reilly
•Only the ones where I knew I was right. The earnings one was correct so I didn't bother appealing that.

Pro tip: always double-check your weekly claim answers before submitting. I accidentally said I refused work one week when I meant to say no, got disqualified, and had to go through the whole appeal process.

Ava Thompson
•That's probably what I did! These questions are worded so confusingly.
0 coins
Amina Bah
•Exactly! They ask about refusing work, being unavailable, earnings, job search - it's easy to click the wrong thing when you're rushing through it.

Wait, so if I have one disqualified week, do I still file weekly claims for the following weeks? Or does that mess things up?
0 coins
CyberSiren
•Yes, keep filing your weekly claims! A disqualified week doesn't stop your claim, you just don't get paid for that specific week.

Keisha Taylor
•Thanks, I was worried about that. The website makes it seem like your whole claim gets messed up.

I'm dealing with this right now too. Got disqualified for not doing enough job search activities even though I did three like they require. Apparently one of my activities didn't count because it wasn't specific enough.

Ava Thompson
•What made it not specific enough? I'm worried about my job search activities now.

•I put 'applied online' as the method but didn't include the specific website or job title. They want really detailed information.

The whole disqualification system is designed to trip people up and save the state money. They make the questions confusing on purpose.

CyberSiren
•While the system can be confusing, most disqualifications are based on legitimate eligibility requirements. The key is understanding what each question is really asking.

Natasha Petrova
•Maybe, but they could make it a lot clearer instead of using confusing government language.

UPDATE 2: I'm going to appeal this. After reading everyone's responses, I'm pretty sure I just clicked the wrong answer about being available for work. Thanks for all the help explaining how this works!

CyberSiren
•Good decision! Make sure to explain in your appeal that it was an error in how you answered the question, not that you were actually unavailable for work.

Miguel Alvarez
•Yeah, be very clear that you were available and able to work that entire week despite having a medical appointment.

Just went through this whole process myself. The appeal was approved and I got my benefits for that week. Don't be afraid to appeal if you know you were eligible!

Ava Thompson
•How long did the appeal take to get decided?
0 coins
Javier Hernandez
•About 3 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. They backpay you if you win the appeal.

Another option if you can't get through to Washington ESD on the phone is using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I tried it last week when I had questions about my disqualified week and actually got to talk to an agent the same day.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•I might try that if I have trouble with my appeal. Did they charge you a lot?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•They don't mention pricing upfront but it was worth it to get answers quickly instead of spending days trying to call.

been there! had two disqualified weeks in a row because i kept making the same mistake on my weekly claims. finally figured out what i was doing wrong and haven't had problems since

Ava Thompson
•What mistake were you making? Want to make sure I don't do the same thing.

•i was answering yes to refusing work when they asked about any offers, but i meant to say i didn't receive any offers at all. the question is confusing

Final advice for everyone: always read each question on your weekly claim carefully, keep detailed records of your job search activities in WorkSourceWA, and don't hesitate to appeal if you believe a disqualification is wrong. Most mistakes can be corrected through the appeal process.

Bookmarking this thread in case I run into the same issue. The weekly claims process is way more complicated than it should be.

•Right? I wish they had better explanations of what each question means before you answer.

•At least now I know that one disqualified week won't ruin my whole claim. That was my biggest worry.
