What does it mean when Washington ESD unemployment says disqualified - got this status today
Just checked my Washington ESD account and my claim status changed to 'disqualified' overnight. I have no idea what this means or what I did wrong. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job searches. Last week everything looked normal and now this. Does anyone know what disqualified means and if I can fix this? I'm really stressed because I need these benefits to pay rent.

Disqualified means Washington ESD has determined you don't meet the eligibility requirements for some reason. Common causes include job separation issues (like quitting without good cause or being fired for misconduct), not being able and available for work, or failing to meet work search requirements. You should have received a determination letter explaining the specific reason.

•I haven't gotten any letter yet but I'll check my mail tomorrow. This is so confusing because I was laid off, didn't quit.

•Check your online account too, sometimes the determination shows up there before the mail arrives

I went through this same thing last year. Disqualified doesn't always mean permanent - it could be a temporary issue that can be resolved. The key is figuring out WHY you were disqualified. Did you miss any weekly certifications or have any issues with your job search log?

•I don't think I missed anything but now I'm second guessing myself. How do I check my job search log history?

•Log into your eServices account and look under the job search section. It should show all your entries and if any were flagged as insufficient.

Getting through to Washington ESD to find out what happened can be impossible with their phone system. I spent weeks trying to reach someone when I got disqualified. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent within a few hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth trying if you can't get through the regular way.

•Never heard of that but anything is better than sitting on hold for 6 hours. Did they charge you a lot?

•They focus on getting you connected rather than cost. For me it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain my disqualification.

•I'm skeptical of these third party services but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is broken so maybe it's worth it

DISQUALIFIED means they think you did something wrong but half the time it's their mistake! I got disqualified because they said I wasn't looking for work even though I had been doing 3 job searches every week like required. The system is broken and they disqualify people for no good reason all the time.

•While there can be system errors, most disqualifications do have legitimate reasons. That's why it's important to get the determination letter to understand the specific issue.

•Sure but their adjudicators make mistakes constantly. I had to appeal and prove I WAS doing job searches the whole time.

Check if your employer contested your claim. Sometimes companies fight unemployment claims and if Washington ESD sides with them, you get disqualified. This happened to my friend who thought she was laid off but the company claimed she was fired for performance issues.

•Oh no, I never thought about that. How would I know if they contested it?

•It should be mentioned in your determination letter when you get it. The letter will explain their decision and what evidence they considered.

same thing happened to me last month turned out I had made an error on one of my weekly claims about my work hours and they disqualified me for providing false information even though it was an honest mistake

•Did you get it fixed? That's exactly the kind of thing I'm worried about - making a mistake without realizing it.

•yes but took forever to reach anyone at esd to explain what happened

The most important thing right now is to get that determination letter and understand the specific reason for disqualification. Once you know that, you can decide whether to appeal or if there's something you need to correct. You have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal if you disagree with their decision.

Zara Perez
•30 days from when? From when they made the decision or from when I receive the letter?
0 coins
Daniel Rogers
•From the date on the determination letter, not when you receive it. That's why it's crucial to get mail promptly and check your online account regularly.

I got disqualified once because I reported that I had worked a few hours one week but apparently entered the wrong dates. They said I was trying to hide work which was totally not true. The whole system is set up to catch people making innocent mistakes.

•That's frustrating but it shows why being super careful with dates and amounts when filing weekly claims is so important.

•Yeah learned that the hard way. Now I double check everything before submitting.

Update on my earlier suggestion - I actually used Claimyr again this month for a different issue and they got me through to someone at Washington ESD within 2 hours. Much better than the 4+ hour holds I was dealing with before. Really helps when you need answers quickly about claim issues.

•I'm definitely going to look into this if I can't figure out what's going on with my disqualification.

•How does it work exactly? Do they just help you get through or do they talk to ESD for you?

•They help you get connected to an actual ESD agent, then you handle your own call. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore it hoping it will go away. I made that mistake and by the time I tried to appeal it was too late. Even if you think the disqualification is wrong, you need to take action within that 30 day window.

•That's scary. I definitely won't ignore it. Just trying to understand what I'm dealing with first.

•Smart approach. Get the determination letter, understand the reason, then decide your next steps.

Could also be related to identity verification issues. Washington ESD has been super strict about ID verification lately and sometimes flags accounts for additional verification which can show up as disqualified status temporarily.

•I did have to verify my identity when I first applied but that was months ago. Could it be related to that?

Anna Stewart
•Possibly, especially if there were any changes to your personal information or if they needed additional documents.

Also check if you've been meeting the work search requirements correctly. They require 3 job search activities per week and they have specific rules about what counts. If you've been doing the same type of searches every week or not logging them properly, that could trigger a disqualification.

Zara Perez
•I thought I was doing it right but maybe I misunderstood something. Where can I find the exact requirements?

Aaliyah Reed
•Check the Washington ESD website under work search requirements. They have detailed info about what activities qualify and how to log them properly.

another possibility is if you moved recently or had any address changes that could affect your eligibility status especially if you moved out of state even temporarily

Zara Perez
•No address changes for me, still in the same place I was when I applied.

Don't panic yet. I've seen people get disqualified for paperwork issues that were easily resolved once they talked to someone at ESD. The hard part is getting through to explain the situation. Definitely try to call first thing Monday morning if you can.

•I'll try calling but from what everyone says it's really hard to get through.

•True, the phone system is terrible. That's why some people use services like that Claimyr thing to get connected faster.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while disqualified if you plan to appeal. Sometimes people stop filing and then have gaps in their claim that cause problems later.
0 coins
Zara Perez
•Really? Even though I'm disqualified I should keep filing?
0 coins
Morgan Washington
•Yes, if you're planning to appeal the disqualification. It maintains your claim continuity in case the appeal is successful.

Daniel Rogers
•This is correct. Keep filing to preserve your claim dates, even if you're not receiving payments during the disqualification period.

Had a similar scare last year - turned out to be a computer glitch that showed me as disqualified for like 48 hours then went back to normal. Sometimes their system has temporary issues that resolve themselves.
0 coins
Zara Perez
•I hope that's all this is! How long should I wait to see if it fixes itself?
0 coins
Kaylee Cook
•I'd give it a day or two but also try to get through to someone to be safe. Better to know for sure than hope it's just a glitch.

Final advice - document everything. Screenshot your current claim status, save copies of all your weekly claim submissions, and keep track of your job search activities. If you need to appeal, having good documentation will help your case significantly.
