Why does it say disqualification on my Washington ESD unemployment claim?
I logged into my Washington ESD account this morning and saw that my claim status changed to 'disqualified' but there's no explanation anywhere. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job search activities. I got laid off from my warehouse job 6 weeks ago and everything seemed fine until now. Has anyone else had this happen? What does disqualification even mean and how do I fix it?

Disqualification usually means Washington ESD found an issue with your eligibility. Common reasons include not meeting work search requirements, availability issues, or something from your separation. Did you get any letters or notices in your online account under 'correspondence'?

•I checked and there's one letter dated 3 days ago but it just says 'disqualification determination' without specifics. This is so confusing.

•That letter should have details about the specific reason and your appeal rights. Sometimes the system is slow to update with full details.

same thing happened to me last month, mine was because they said I quit voluntarily but I was actually laid off. took forever to get through to anyone at washington esd to explain

•How did you finally reach them? I've been trying to call for two days straight.

•honestly I used this service called claimyr.com that calls them for you. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. saved me hours of trying to get through

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Did it actually work?

Before you panic, check if this is a temporary disqualification or a permanent one. Temporary ones are usually about job search requirements or availability issues that can be resolved quickly once you provide the right information to Washington ESD.

•How can I tell the difference? The letter doesn't seem to specify which type it is.

•Look for language about 'until you meet requirements' versus 'for the duration of your claim.' Also check if there's a specific number of weeks mentioned.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with Washington ESD! They disqualify people without proper explanation and then make it impossible to reach anyone for help. The whole system is broken.

•I feel your frustration but complaining won't help OP solve their problem right now.

•Fair point, just venting because I went through the same runaround for weeks.

OP, you mentioned you were laid off - did your employer contest your claim? Sometimes employers dispute unemployment claims weeks after approval, which can trigger a disqualification while Washington ESD reviews the case.

•I don't think so? My supervisor seemed understanding when they let me go due to downsizing. Would I be notified if they contested it?

•Usually yes, but not always immediately. Check your correspondence section again for any notices about employer protests or fact-finding questionnaires.

•There is a form titled 'separation information request' that I missed somehow. Should I fill this out immediately?

YES fill out that separation form ASAP! That's probably exactly what caused your disqualification. Washington ESD needs to verify the details of why you left your job. Don't wait on this - there are usually deadlines.

•Thank you! I'm filling it out right now. Should I also try calling them or just submit the form?

•Submit the form first since you have it, but calling can help speed up the process. The phone lines are brutal though.

I had a disqualification last year that turned out to be a computer error. Sometimes their system flags accounts incorrectly and it gets fixed once a human reviews it.

CosmicCaptain
•That's somewhat reassuring. How long did it take to get resolved?

Chloe Martin
•About 2 weeks after I submitted the paperwork they requested. Got backpay for the weeks I missed too.

Just wanted to follow up on the claimyr thing - I was skeptical at first too but it really worked. They called Washington ESD for me and I got through to an actual person who explained my disqualification and helped me fix it. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

Isabella Ferreira
•It's not free but honestly worth it when you're facing financial stress. Much cheaper than missing more unemployment payments.

•I'm seriously considering this if I can't get through on my own in the next day or two.

Quick tip: if you do need to appeal a disqualification, you usually have 30 days from the date on the determination letter. Don't miss that deadline even if you're trying to resolve it informally first.

•Good point. My letter is dated from 3 days ago so I have time, but I don't want to wait too long.

Omar Zaki
•Exactly. Appeals can take months to process so it's better to file one as backup even if you think you can resolve it directly.

were you doing your job search activities correctly? i got disqualified because i wasnt logging them right in worksourcewa

•I thought I was but maybe I made a mistake? I've been applying to jobs and logging them in the system.

•check if you have the right number of activities per week and if theyre all qualifying activities. some things dont count

•The job search requirements changed recently so older information online might not be accurate anymore.

Since you found that separation form, I'd bet that's the issue. Fill it out completely and honestly. Include details about the layoff process, whether you received advance notice, if there were performance issues, etc. Be thorough but factual.

•Should I attach any documentation like my layoff notice or emails from my supervisor?
0 coins
Malik Johnson
•Absolutely! Any documentation that proves you were laid off rather than quit or fired for cause will help your case significantly.

This happened to my neighbor too and it turned out Washington ESD mixed up his case with someone else who had a similar name. Bureaucratic nightmare but got sorted out eventually.

CosmicCaptain
•Wow, that's crazy but would explain why there's no clear explanation in my letter.

•Yeah it was a mess. He had to provide extra ID verification and everything. Took like a month to straighten out.

OP - any update on filling out that separation form? Also curious if you were able to get through to Washington ESD by phone or if you ended up trying that calling service people mentioned.

•I submitted the form yesterday with all my layoff documentation. Still haven't gotten through by phone - might try claimyr today if nothing changes.

•Good call on the documentation. Sometimes the form submission alone is enough to trigger a review and reversal.

just went through this exact situation 2 months ago. disqualification notice came out of nowhere but it was because my old employer finally responded to washington esd request for information and gave wrong details about my termination
0 coins
CosmicCaptain
•That's exactly what I'm worried about. How did you prove your employer was wrong?

•had to gather all my employment records, emails, witness statements from coworkers. became a whole production but worth it in the end

The fact that you have to jump through all these hoops just to get benefits you're entitled to is ridiculous. Washington ESD should have to prove disqualification, not the other way around.

•While I agree the system is frustrating, they do have to prevent fraud and verify eligibility. The process could definitely be clearer though.

Freya Thomsen
•Sure but sending a generic disqualification notice without explanation isn't fraud prevention, it's just poor communication.

For what it's worth, most disqualifications I've seen get overturned when people provide the requested information promptly. The key is responding quickly and thoroughly to whatever Washington ESD is asking for.
0 coins
CosmicCaptain
•That's encouraging. I'm trying to be as thorough as possible with my response.

•Also don't be afraid to include extra documentation if you think it supports your case. Better to provide too much information than too little.

Update us when you hear back OP! I'm dealing with Washington ESD adjudication issues too and want to see how yours turns out.

•Will do! Hopefully I hear something in the next few days. This whole process is so stressful when you're already dealing with job loss.

Quick update for anyone still reading - I just helped my friend use claimyr.com last week for a similar disqualification issue and they got it resolved in 2 days after talking to an actual Washington ESD representative. Sometimes you really do need to speak with someone directly to get these things sorted out fast.

•That's really good to know. I'm giving my form submission until tomorrow and then I'll probably try that route.
