Why is my Washington ESD unemployment disqualified - need help understanding the reason
Just checked my account this morning and my unemployment claim shows as disqualified but there's no clear explanation. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job searches through WorkSourceWA like I'm supposed to. The last message I got from Washington ESD was weeks ago asking for some additional documentation which I sent in right away. Now suddenly I'm disqualified and can't figure out what went wrong. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do I find out the specific reason and what can I do to fix it?

You need to log into your Washington ESD account and look for any determination letters or notices. They usually send a detailed explanation of why you were disqualified. Check under your messages or documents section.

•I checked everywhere in my account but there's no determination letter or anything explaining it. Just shows 'disqualified' on my claim summary.

•That's weird, they're supposed to send you a written notice by law. You might need to call them directly to get the reason.

•How did you finally resolve it? I'm starting to panic about my bills.

There are several common reasons for disqualification: voluntary quit without good cause, fired for misconduct, not able and available for work, or failing to meet job search requirements. Did any of these apply to your situation?

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, been available for work, and completing my job searches every week. None of those reasons make sense for my case.

•If none of those apply, it could be an issue with your documentation or identity verification. Sometimes they disqualify while investigating potential fraud, even if you did nothing wrong.

I had success using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. They have a service that calls on your behalf and gets you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth trying since you need to speak with someone to understand your disqualification.

•Is that legit? Seems too good to be true that they can actually get through when nobody else can.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but they actually got me through in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

•I'll look into that, thanks. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get answers.

Washington ESD is absolutely terrible about communication. They'll disqualify you and then make you jump through hoops to find out why. It's intentionally confusing to discourage people from appealing.

•I agree the system is frustrating but they are legally required to provide notice of disqualification reasons.

•Sure they're 'required' to but that doesn't mean they actually do it properly or make it easy to understand.

You should also check if there are any outstanding issues or pending adjudications on your claim. Sometimes a disqualification appears while they're still reviewing something, and it might get reversed once the adjudication is complete.

•How do I check for pending adjudications? I don't see anything obvious in my account.

•Look for a section called 'Issues' or 'Adjudication Status' in your account. It might be under claim details or a separate tab.

happened to my brother last year, turned out they had the wrong separation date from his employer and thought he quit instead of being laid off

•How did he get that fixed?

•had to get his former employer to send corrected paperwork to Washington ESD, took forever but eventually got resolved

Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims even while disqualified. If you win an appeal later, you could lose benefits for any weeks you didn't file during the disqualification period.

Cynthia Love
•Really? I can still file weekly claims even though I'm disqualified?
0 coins
Elliott luviBorBatman
•Yes, you should keep filing to protect your benefit weeks. The system will still accept your weekly claims even during a disqualification.

Lena Schultz
•This is correct advice. Always keep filing weekly even during appeals or disqualifications.

Check your email including spam folder for any notices from Washington ESD. Sometimes their emails end up in spam and contain important information about your claim status.

Cynthia Love
•Good idea, I'll check my spam folder now.

UGH this is exactly what happened to me 3 months ago! Still fighting it. The whole system is designed to deny as many people as possible and hope you give up.

•What reason did they give for your disqualification?

Gemma Andrews
•They said I wasn't actively looking for work even though I submitted my job searches every week through WorkSourceWA. Makes no sense.

You have the right to appeal any disqualification decision. Even if you can't get through by phone right now, start the appeal process online or by mail to protect your rights. You typically have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal.

Cynthia Love
•How do I appeal if I don't even know the specific reason for the disqualification?
0 coins
Mae Bennett
•You can file an appeal stating that you disagree with the disqualification and request a hearing. They'll have to provide the reason during the appeal process.

Try calling the Washington ESD customer service line first thing Monday morning right at 8am when they open. Sometimes you can get through easier at opening time.

•I've tried that strategy multiple times and still can't get through. The line is always busy.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - I was doing the same thing for weeks with no luck. They have ways to get through that regular people don't.

Could be an identity verification issue. If there's any question about your identity or someone else filed a claim using your information, they'll disqualify you while investigating.
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•How would I know if that's the case? And what do I do about it?
0 coins
Dallas Villalobos
•You'd need to speak with Washington ESD directly to confirm and provide additional identity documents if needed.

same boat here, disqualified last week with zero explanation. this is so stressful when you're already struggling financially
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•Exactly! The financial stress is bad enough without having to play detective to figure out why they cut off your benefits.

Whatever you do, don't let this drag on too long. Benefit disqualifications can affect your eligibility for future claims if not resolved properly. Get on the phone with them ASAP.

•I'm trying but can't get through! That's the whole problem.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. When you can't get through on your own, they can help bridge that gap.

Document everything - when you called, what times, what you tried. If this goes to an appeal hearing, having records of your attempts to resolve the issue will help your case.

•Good point, I'll start keeping a log of all my contact attempts.

Check if your employer contested your claim. Sometimes employers will contest unemployment claims weeks or months after you initially file, which can trigger a disqualification while they review the contest.

Cynthia Love
•How would I find out if my employer contested it?
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•That information should be in your Washington ESD account under claim details or issues, but if it's not showing up you'll need to call to find out.

I know someone who got disqualified because they made an error on one of their weekly claims and Washington ESD interpreted it as fraud. Even innocent mistakes can trigger disqualifications.
0 coins
Cynthia Love
•That's terrifying. I've been so careful with my weekly claims but who knows if I made some tiny error they're interpreting wrong.

Jake Sinclair
•Yeah the system is very unforgiving about any inconsistencies, even if they're honest mistakes.

Update: I finally got through using that Claimyr service mentioned earlier. Turns out there was an issue with my job separation information that my former employer had submitted incorrectly. They're fixing it now but it's going to take 2-3 weeks to process. At least I finally know what happened!

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - got disqualified last week with no clear explanation in my account. Reading through all these responses is both helpful and frustrating because it seems like this is such a common problem with Washington ESD. I'm going to try the Claimyr service that several people mentioned since calling directly hasn't worked for me either. It's ridiculous that we have to pay a third party service just to get through to our own state unemployment office, but at this point I just need answers. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this mess.
