Washington ESD shows disqualified week - what does it mean when you have disqualified week from unemployment?
I'm looking at my weekly claim history on the Washington ESD website and one of my weeks shows as 'disqualified' instead of paid. I have no idea what this means or why it happened. All my other weeks have been fine and I've been getting benefits normally. I didn't do anything different that week - still filed my weekly claim on time, reported my job search activities, and marked that I was available for work. Does anyone know what causes a disqualified week and how to fix it? I'm worried this might affect my other benefits.

A disqualified week usually means Washington ESD found an issue with your eligibility for that specific week. Common reasons include not meeting job search requirements, reporting work income incorrectly, or indicating you weren't available for work. Check your claim details to see if there's a specific reason listed.

•I checked and it doesn't give me any specific reason, just says 'disqualified.' Should I call Washington ESD to find out more details?

•Yes, calling would be your best bet to get the exact reason. They can look at your claim and tell you specifically what triggered the disqualification.

This happened to me too! In my case it was because I marked that I had turned down work that week, even though it was a sketchy MLM thing. Washington ESD automatically disqualifies you if you refuse any job offer.

•I definitely didn't turn down any work that week. Maybe it's something else?

•Could be a job search issue then. Did you complete all your required job contacts that week?

Tyrone Hill
•I thought I did but now I'm second guessing myself. How many job contacts do we need per week?

Good luck getting through to Washington ESD on the phone. I've been trying for weeks to resolve my own issue and can never get past the busy signal. The wait times are absolutely ridiculous.

•Have you tried calling right when they open at 8am? That's usually the best time to get through.

•I've tried everything - early morning, lunch time, different days. Nothing works.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It's been a lifesaver for getting my issues resolved.

The most common reasons for disqualified weeks are: 1) Insufficient job search activities (you need 3 job contacts per week), 2) Reporting that you weren't available for work, 3) Earning too much money that week, or 4) Not filing your weekly claim on time. Double check each of these for that specific week.

•Wait, is it 3 job contacts per week? I thought it was 2. Could that be my problem?

Aiden O'Connor
•It's been 3 per week since they updated the requirements. If you only did 2 that week, that would definitely cause a disqualification.

•Actually I think it depends on how long you've been claiming. New claimants might have different requirements.

OMG this is my worst nightmare! What if they want me to pay back all my benefits because of one disqualified week?? I can't afford to pay anything back right now.

•One disqualified week won't affect your other weeks or require you to pay anything back. It just means you won't get paid for that specific week.

•Okay that's a relief. But I still need that money from that week!

•You can appeal the disqualification if you believe it was done in error. You have 30 days from the date of the determination notice.

Check your WorkSourceWA account too. Sometimes if there's an issue with your job search log there, it can trigger a disqualification. Make sure all your job contacts are properly entered with complete information.

•I didn't know WorkSourceWA was connected to my weekly claims. How often do they check that?

•They can audit your job search activities at any time. It's all connected to your Washington ESD claim.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing. Why can't they just tell us exactly what we did wrong instead of making us guess?

Giovanni Rossi
•Right?? And good luck getting anyone on the phone to explain it!

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. I got tired of spending hours trying to reach someone. Now I can actually talk to an agent when I need to understand these issues.

I had a disqualified week last month and it turned out to be because I reported working a few hours but entered the gross pay instead of net pay. Small mistake but it made them think I earned too much that week.

•I didn't work at all that week so it's not an income issue. This is so frustrating.

•Then it's probably job search related. Did you keep detailed records of your job applications that week?

Tyrone Hill
•I think so but maybe I'm missing something. I wish I could just talk to someone at Washington ESD to figure this out.

Update on my earlier comment - I finally tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent today! They were able to explain my issue in like 10 minutes. Wish I had known about this service weeks ago.

•Really? How does it work exactly?

•You just give them your info and they call Washington ESD for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

•Is there a cost for using Claimyr? Sounds too good to be true.

If you're going to appeal the disqualification, make sure you have all your documentation ready. They'll want proof of your job search activities, any work you did or didn't do that week, and evidence that you were available for work.

Tyrone Hill
•How do I prove I was available for work? That seems hard to document.

Miguel Hernández
•Usually your job search activities serve as proof that you were actively seeking work. Keep records of applications, networking contacts, and any interviews.

Same thing happened to my neighbor. Turns out she accidentally clicked the wrong box when filing her weekly claim and said she wasn't available for work. One wrong click = no payment for that week.
0 coins
Tyrone Hill
•Oh no, I hope I didn't do that! Those questions can be confusing sometimes.

Sasha Ivanov
•Yeah, you have to be really careful. The wording is tricky on some of those questions.

To resolve this, you need to either: 1) Call Washington ESD to get the specific reason and see if it can be corrected, 2) File an appeal if you believe the disqualification was wrong, or 3) Accept the disqualification and make sure it doesn't happen again. Don't ignore it because it could indicate an ongoing issue with your claim.

•Good luck with that. I've been trying to reach them for two weeks about my own disqualified week.

•That's the perfect situation for Claimyr. They specialize in getting you through to agents for exactly these kinds of questions about claim status and disqualifications.

Whatever you do, don't panic. One disqualified week isn't the end of the world. I've had several over the years for various stupid reasons and my benefits continued fine after I resolved each issue.

Tyrone Hill
•That's reassuring to hear. I was worried this would mess up everything.

•Nope, just focus on figuring out what went wrong so you can avoid it in the future.

Check if you received any mail or messages from Washington ESD around that time. Sometimes they send notices about eligibility issues that you might have missed.

•I'll check my mail pile. I might have overlooked something important.

The Washington ESD website is supposed to show the reason for disqualification in your claim history, but sometimes it's not detailed enough. If you can get through to an agent, they can access more detailed notes about what caused it.

Tyrone Hill
•Yeah, mine just says 'disqualified' with no explanation. I definitely need to talk to someone.

•I had the same vague message. Turned out it was a system glitch and they fixed it once I got through to explain the situation.

Pro tip: screenshot your weekly claim answers before you submit them. That way if there's ever a question about what you reported, you have proof of what you actually said.

•That's smart! I'll start doing that from now on.

•I also keep a notebook with my job search activities written down each week. Helps if I ever need to reference what I did.
