What is a disqualified week for unemployment - Washington ESD confused me
I'm trying to understand what Washington ESD means by 'disqualified week' on my unemployment claim. I filed my weekly claim last Sunday and when I checked my account today it shows one week as 'disqualified' but doesn't really explain why. I answered all the questions honestly about job search activities and availability for work. Is this something that will affect my whole claim or just that one week? Really confused about what this means and if I need to do something to fix it.

A disqualified week means Washington ESD determined you didn't meet the eligibility requirements for that specific week. Common reasons include not being able and available for work, not conducting adequate job search, or having earnings that exceed your weekly benefit amount. Check your account for any notices explaining the specific reason.

•I don't see any notices in my account explaining it. Should I call Washington ESD to find out the reason?

•Yes, you should definitely call to get clarification. Sometimes the notices take a day or two to show up in your account, but calling will give you immediate answers.

same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, turned out i didnt log enough job contacts that week. was able to fix it by submitting proof of additional job search activities

Andre Dubois
•How did you submit the proof? Did you have to mail it or was there an online option?

•uploaded it through the secure messaging system in my account. took about a week to get reviewed and approved

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, there's actually a service called Claimyr that can help you reach an agent. They have a system that handles the calling for you and connects you when an agent is available. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I used it last month when I couldn't get through on my own.

•That sounds helpful! I've been trying to call for days with no luck. How long did it take for them to connect you?

Jamal Carter
•It took about 2 hours but I didn't have to sit on hold the whole time. They just called me back when they got through to an agent.

DISQUALIFIED WEEKS ARE THE WORST! I had three of them in a row because I made a mistake on my job search log. Washington ESD is so picky about everything - one small error and they disqualify you for the entire week!

Andre Dubois
•What kind of mistake did you make? I'm worried I might have done something wrong too.

•I put down that I applied for a job but didn't include the contact information properly. They said it didn't count as a valid job contact.

Check if you reported any earnings for that week, even part-time work or gig work. If you earned more than your weekly benefit amount plus the $5 disregard, that could cause a disqualification.

Andre Dubois
•I didn't work at all that week, so it's not earnings related. Must be something else.

•Then it's likely job search related or an issue with your availability. Did you have any appointments or travel that week that might have affected your availability?

Andre Dubois
•I had a doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon but I was available for work the rest of the week.

wait so if one week is disqualified does that mean my whole claim gets messed up? im really worried about this now

•No, a disqualified week typically only affects that specific week. Your claim should continue normally for other weeks as long as you meet the requirements.

•ok thats a relief, was really stressing about losing everything

The most important thing is to get clarification from Washington ESD about why the week was disqualified. Sometimes it's a simple fix, other times you might need to appeal. Either way, you need to know the specific reason before you can take action.

•How long do you have to appeal a disqualified week if you disagree with the decision?
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•You have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal. Don't wait too long if you think the disqualification is wrong.

pro tip - always keep detailed records of your job search activities. i learned this the hard way after getting disqualified. now i screenshot everything and keep a spreadsheet

Andre Dubois
•That's good advice. I've been keeping records but maybe not detailed enough.

•What kind of details do you include in your spreadsheet? I want to make sure I'm tracking everything correctly.

•company name, job title, date applied, how i applied (online, email, etc), contact info, and any follow up actions. basically everything washington esd might ask about

I had a similar situation last year and it turned out to be a system glitch. The week wasn't actually disqualified, it was just showing wrong in my account. Definitely call to verify.

Andre Dubois
•That gives me hope! Maybe it's just a display error. I'll definitely call to check.

•Yeah, the Washington ESD system isn't perfect. Sometimes what you see online doesn't match what's actually in their records.

this is why i hate dealing with unemployment stuff, always something going wrong or getting flagged for no reason

•I feel you. It's stressful enough being unemployed without having to worry about every little detail on your weekly claim.

•exactly! and trying to get someone on the phone to explain anything is nearly impossible

Check your Work Search Log in your account. If you didn't meet the minimum number of job contacts for that week, that's probably why it was disqualified. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•I thought I did 3 activities but let me double check my log. Maybe I miscounted or one didn't qualify.
0 coins
ElectricDreamer
•Make sure each activity meets their requirements. Not all job search activities count toward the 3 required contacts.

Had this happen when I was sick one day and marked that I wasn't available for work. Even though I was available the other 6 days, they disqualified the whole week.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•That seems harsh! One day and they disqualify the whole week?
0 coins
Ava Johnson
•Yeah, if you're not available for work any part of the week, they can disqualify the entire week. It's frustrating but that's how their system works.

I've found that using Claimyr really helps when you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about issues like this. Much better than trying to get through on your own. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Sometimes disqualified weeks are related to issues with your identity verification or other administrative problems, not just job search or availability. Could be worth checking if there are any outstanding issues with your claim.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•Good point. I'll check if there are any other flags or issues when I call Washington ESD.
0 coins
Yara Abboud
•Yeah, sometimes there are backend issues that don't show up clearly in your online account but affect your weekly claims.

The key thing is don't panic. One disqualified week happens to lots of people and it's usually fixable. Just get the details from Washington ESD and follow their instructions to resolve it.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I'll call tomorrow and see what they say about the disqualification.

my cousin had like 6 disqualified weeks in a row because he forgot to do his job search activities properly. took him months to get it all sorted out

Andre Dubois
•Wow, that sounds like a nightmare. I hope mine is just a one-time thing.

Paolo Rizzo
•yeah he eventually got most of the weeks paid but it was a huge hassle. definitely better to catch these things early

Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even if you have disqualified weeks. Don't let your claim lapse while you're trying to resolve the issue.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•Good advice! I'll keep filing every week regardless of this issue.
0 coins
Amina Sy
•Exactly. If you stop filing, you could lose your whole claim and have to start over from scratch.

honestly the washington esd system is so confusing, half the time i dont even know if im doing things right. wish they would make it clearer what counts as a disqualification

•I agree, the instructions aren't always clear. Would be nice if they gave better explanations upfront instead of disqualifying people after the fact.

•exactly! and then when you try to call for clarification you can never get through to anyone

One more thing to consider - if you have a disqualified week, it might affect your total weeks of eligibility. Make sure you understand how it impacts your overall benefit year.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•I hadn't thought about that. I'll ask about it when I call Washington ESD tomorrow.

NebulaNomad
•Yeah, disqualified weeks can sometimes count against your total weeks even though you don't get paid for them. Important to clarify.
