What does disqualification week mean on Washington ESD unemployment claim?
I'm looking at my Washington ESD account and it shows 'disqualification week' for one of my weekly claims but I have no idea what that means. I filed everything normally and reported my hours worked that week (about 15 hours). Now it's showing as disqualified and I'm not getting paid for that week. Does anyone know what disqualification week actually means and how to fix this? I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to ask.

A disqualification week usually means something in your weekly claim didn't meet the eligibility requirements for that specific week. It could be that you worked too many hours, didn't do your required job search activities, or there was an issue with your availability that week. Check your claim details to see if there's a specific reason listed.

•I looked but it doesn't give me any specific reason, just says disqualified. I did my job searches and was available to work. Really frustrating not knowing why.

•Same thing happened to me last month. Turned out I had reported my hours wrong and it looked like I worked full time when I didn't.

If you worked 15 hours that week, did you earn more than your weekly benefit amount? That could trigger a disqualification. Also, were you available for full-time work that week? Even if you worked part-time, you still need to be available for additional work.

•I only made about $180 that week and my weekly benefit is $387, so it should have been fine. And yes I was available for more work.

•That's weird then. With those numbers you should have gotten a partial payment, not a disqualification. Definitely sounds like a system error or there's something else going on.

I had this exact problem a few weeks ago and couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally used a service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person. They have this system that calls for you and waits on hold. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. The agent was able to look at my account and fix the disqualification issue right away.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money because of this disqualified week.

•They focus on getting you connected rather than the cost. Worth checking out their site for details. For me it was way better than spending hours trying to call myself.

•Never heard of this but might be worth a try. I've been calling Washington ESD for two weeks about my own issue.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so frustrating!! I've had random disqualification weeks too and they NEVER explain why. It's like they just randomly pick weeks to not pay you. I swear they do it on purpose to save money.

•I understand the frustration but there's usually a legitimate reason, even if the system doesn't display it clearly. That's why talking to an agent is so important.

•Yeah but good luck actually reaching an agent! The phone system is impossible.

Check if you had any holidays that week or if you marked yourself as unavailable for any days. Sometimes people forget they marked unavailable for a doctor's appointment or something and that can cause a disqualification.

•Good point! I did have a dental appointment that Tuesday morning but I marked myself as available because it was just a couple hours.

•That might be it. You're supposed to mark unavailable for any time you're not available to work, even for appointments. The system can be really picky about that.

When I had a disqualification week, I had to file an appeal to get it overturned. But first you need to find out the exact reason. Did you get any correspondence in your eServices account about it?

•Let me check my messages... nope, nothing there about the disqualification.

•Sometimes the messages are delayed. I'd give it a few more days before panicking.

Another possibility - did you complete all your WorkSourceWA job search activities for that week? If you didn't log the required number of job search activities, that would definitely cause a disqualification.

Alfredo Lugo
•Yes I logged 3 job search activities like always. I'm pretty careful about that because I know they check.

•Were they quality activities though? I got disqualified once because all my job searches were just online applications without any networking or workshops.

This happened to my neighbor too. Turned out she had earned vacation pay that week that she forgot to report. Even though she didn't work, the vacation pay counted as earnings and disqualified her for that week.

•I didn't get any vacation pay. Just my regular part-time wages.

•What about severance pay, PTO payout, or any other type of payment from previous employers?

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly the only way to get real answers is to talk to an agent. The online system just doesn't give you enough detail about why things happen. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually sounds pretty helpful for getting through.

•Yeah I looked up that Claimyr thing and it seems legit. Might try it if I can't figure this out soon.

•Definitely worth it. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked and saved me so much time and stress.

Could be a computer glitch too. I had a week show as disqualified for no reason and when I finally got through to someone they said it was a system error and fixed it immediately.

•How long did it take you to get through to someone?

•Like 3 hours of calling over several days. It was horrible.

Make sure you didn't accidentally answer any of the weekly questions wrong. Like if you said you weren't able to work or weren't looking for work when you meant to say yes. I've done that before and it caused problems.

•I'm pretty sure I answered everything correctly but I'll double check my responses.

Did you report your gross earnings or net earnings? You're supposed to report gross (before taxes) but some people report net by mistake.
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
•I reported gross earnings like I always do. $180 before taxes for 15 hours of work.

Sydney Torres
•That seems right. At that earnings level you should definitely have received a partial payment, not a disqualification.

sometimes its just a processing delay and it will fix itself in a few days. i had one show disqualified then it changed to paid later

•It's been like this for over a week now so I don't think it's just a delay.

•Yeah if it's been that long something is definitely wrong. You need to talk to someone.

I would try calling early in the morning right when they open at 8am. That's usually the best time to get through. Or try the callback option if it's available.

Alfredo Lugo
•I've tried calling at 8am but the system just says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up on me.

•Same here! It's like they don't even want people to call them.

Honestly at this point I'd just use that Claimyr service. I looked it up after seeing it mentioned here and it seems like exactly what you need. They specialize in getting people connected to Washington ESD agents when the regular phone system isn't working.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore it. A disqualification week can sometimes lead to bigger problems if there's an underlying issue with your claim. Better to get it sorted out now.

Alfredo Lugo
•Good point. I definitely don't want this to cause more problems down the road.

Sydney Torres
•Exactly. And if it was a mistake on their end, you should be able to get back pay for that week once it's fixed.

Keep records of everything - your work hours, job search activities, and when you tried to contact them. You might need all that information if you have to file an appeal.

I had a similar issue a couple months ago where I got a random disqualification week that made no sense. After reading through all these responses, it sounds like you've covered most of the common causes. Since you're sure about your earnings, job searches, and availability, this really does sound like either a system glitch or something related to that dental appointment you mentioned. The fact that you marked yourself as available but had an appointment might have confused their system somehow. I'd definitely recommend trying that Claimyr service that Danielle mentioned - I ended up having to wait 4+ hours on hold when I finally got through the regular way, and it sounds like they can save you that hassle. Keep us posted on what you find out!

•Thanks Talia! Yeah, the dental appointment thing is bothering me now that Daniel mentioned it. I thought marking available was correct since it was just a short appointment, but maybe the system sees any unavailable time as a red flag. I'm going to try calling one more time tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work, I'll definitely check out Claimyr. This whole situation is so stressful when you're already struggling financially. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - it helps to know I'm not the only one dealing with these confusing ESD issues.
