Why does it say disqualified on my unemployment Washington ESD claim?
I just checked my Washington ESD account and it shows 'disqualified' status on my claim but I have no idea why. I was laid off from my retail job two months ago through no fault of my own. I've been filing my weekly claims and doing my job searches like I'm supposed to. There's no explanation anywhere in my account about what caused the disqualification. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm really worried because I need these benefits to pay my rent.

There are several reasons Washington ESD might disqualify a claim. Most common ones are job separation issues (like if they think you quit or were fired for misconduct), not meeting work search requirements, or failing to report income. Did you get any correspondence from them before this happened?

•I haven't gotten any letters or emails from Washington ESD explaining it. Just logged in today and saw the status changed.

•Check your SecureAccess Washington messages too, sometimes they send notices there instead of regular mail.

This exact thing happened to me last year! Turned out my former employer contested my claim and said I was fired for being late too much (which wasn't true). I had to appeal the decision and it took forever to get resolved.

•How did you find out that's what happened? Did Washington ESD tell you or did you have to dig for the information?

•I had to call them like 50 times before I finally got through to someone who could explain what happened. That's when I found out about the employer contest.

If you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone (which is nearly impossible these days), you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you actually reach ESD agents - I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically handle the waiting on hold part for you and then connect you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of my life.

The disqualification could also be related to your job search activities. Are you sure you've been meeting all the requirements? You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep detailed records.

•I've been doing my job searches every week and logging them in WorkSourceWA. Could there be a problem with how I'm documenting them?

Ethan Wilson
•Possibly. Make sure you're being specific about each contact - just putting 'applied online' isn't enough detail for some of their reviewers.

ugh this is so frustrating!! The same thing happened to my cousin and it took her 3 months to get it sorted out. Washington ESD is impossible to deal with

•Three months?? That's terrible. Did she eventually get her back pay?

•yes but only after she got a lawyer involved which cost her money she didn't have

Before you panic too much, try requesting a redetermination first. Sometimes disqualifications happen due to clerical errors or miscommunication. You have 30 days from the date of the disqualification notice to appeal.

•Where do I find the option to request a redetermination? I don't see it anywhere in my online account.

•It should be in your eServices account under the 'Appeals' section. If you can't find it, you might need to call or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned.

Check if you reported any work or income during your claim period. Even small amounts like gig work or side jobs need to be reported, and if Washington ESD finds out later through wage records, they'll disqualify you for non-disclosure.

•I did some Door Dash deliveries a few weeks ago but only made like $80. I didn't think that was enough to matter.

•That could be it! You have to report ALL earnings, even small amounts. The good news is this type of disqualification can usually be fixed if you file an appeal and explain it was an honest mistake.
0 coins
Luca Esposito
•Exactly - any earnings need to be reported in the week you performed the work, not when you got paid. This trips up a lot of people.

I went through something similar and it turned out Washington ESD had the wrong information about my last day of work. My employer had reported the wrong date and it made it look like I had worked during a week I claimed benefits.

StarStrider
•How did you get that corrected? Did you have to get your employer involved?

Nia Thompson
•I had to provide pay stubs and a letter from HR with the correct dates. It was a pain but they eventually fixed it.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore it hoping it will go away. File an appeal ASAP even if you're not sure why you were disqualified. You can always withdraw the appeal later if you figure out it was justified.

•Good point. I'll start working on the appeal paperwork tonight. Thanks for the advice everyone.

honestly the Washington ESD system is so messed up, half the time they disqualify people for no reason and then you have to fight to prove you deserve benefits you were already entitled to. It's backwards.

•So true. I know someone who was disqualified because they thought she quit her job when she was actually laid off. Took months to straighten out.

•The appeal process exists for a reason though. Most legitimate claims get resolved eventually, it just takes patience.

I used Claimyr recently when I had issues with my weekly claim certification. Definitely worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. The phone system is basically useless otherwise.

•Did they help you resolve your issue? I'm considering trying it.

•Yeah, got connected to an agent within a few hours instead of days of trying to call myself. The agent was able to see exactly what the problem was with my account.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while the disqualification is being appealed. If you stop filing and then win your appeal, you might miss out on benefits for those weeks.

StarStrider
•Really? I thought there was no point in filing if I'm disqualified.
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•Nope, you should keep filing to maintain your claim. If the disqualification gets overturned, you'll get back pay for those weeks.

Luca Esposito
•This is correct advice. Always continue filing weekly claims during an appeal process.

Could be an issue with your able and available status too. Did you have any periods where you couldn't work due to illness, vacation, or other reasons?
0 coins
StarStrider
•I did have the flu for a few days last month but I didn't think that would matter since I was still looking for work.

Maya Patel
•If you were sick and couldn't accept work if it was offered, you're supposed to mark yourself as not able and available for those days. That might have triggered the disqualification.

same thing happened to me but it was because I didn't respond to some form they sent me that I never received. check your mail carefully and also your spam folder for emails

The most important thing is to gather all your documentation - pay stubs, termination letter, job search logs, any communication with Washington ESD. You'll need all of this for your appeal.
0 coins
StarStrider
•I have most of that stuff. Should I also get a statement from my former manager about why I was laid off?
0 coins
Emma Garcia
•If you can get something in writing about the layoff, that would definitely help your case. Make sure it's on company letterhead if possible.

Don't let them intimidate you. A lot of these disqualifications are bogus and Washington ESD banks on people not appealing. Stand up for yourself and fight it.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I definitely plan to appeal this.

If the Door Dash income is what caused the disqualification, you might be able to resolve it quickly by just amending your weekly claim certifications to include that income. Sometimes Washington ESD will lift the disqualification once you correct the reporting.
0 coins
StarStrider
•How do I amend previous weekly claims? I don't see an option for that in my account.

Ethan Anderson
•You'll probably need to call them or use Claimyr to get that done. It's not something you can typically do online.

Aisha Abdullah
•Yeah, definitely a situation where you need to actually speak with an agent. Claimyr would be perfect for this type of issue.

Keep us updated on what happens with your appeal. I'm curious to know what the actual reason was for the disqualification.

I had a similar disqualification issue last year and it turned out to be a combination of unreported gig work (like your Door Dash situation) plus a miscommunication about my job separation. Based on what you've shared, the $80 from Door Dash is likely the culprit - Washington ESD is really strict about reporting ALL income, even small amounts. The good news is that if it's just an honest reporting mistake, these types of disqualifications can usually be resolved through the appeal process. I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent quickly - they can tell you exactly why you were disqualified and help you fix any reporting issues. Don't wait too long though, you only have 30 days to appeal from the date of the disqualification notice.
