Just want to add that if you're working for a temp agency while on unemployment, make sure they understand you're on benefits. Some agencies are good about scheduling around your benefit requirements, others not so much.
Bottom line - you can work and collect benefits in Washington, just be honest about your earnings and understand the calculation. When in doubt, call Washington ESD or use a service like Claimyr to get through to someone who can explain your specific situation.
I used that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier when I had issues with my weekly claim getting stuck. worked exactly like they said - got through to Washington ESD in minutes instead of hours. definitely recommend it if you're having trouble reaching them
Thank you all for sharing your experiences. This has been really eye-opening and helpful. It's good to know I'm not alone in dealing with these challenges and that there are resources available. Going to look into some of the suggestions about WorkSourceWA and other support services.
And remember that Claimyr service if you need to reach Washington ESD quickly about anything. Takes a lot of stress out of dealing with the system.
Just remember that even if you qualify, there might be a waiting period for your first payment while they process everything. Don't panic if you don't get paid immediately after filing.
Usually 2-3 weeks for the initial determination, but can be longer if there are any issues with your claim.
This is another reason why Claimyr can be helpful - you can get real updates on your claim status instead of just wondering.
Bottom line - file your claim ASAP and let Washington ESD determine if you qualify. With 8 months of work at a decent wage, you almost certainly will. Don't overthink it.
I tried using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and it actually got me through to ESD when I needed to ask about tax withholding. Worth checking out if you can't get through their regular lines. The demo video explained it pretty well.
Bottom line for anyone reading this - unemployment benefits are taxable income, period. Plan accordingly by either having taxes withheld or setting money aside. Don't get caught off guard like so many of us did!

The whole system is designed to help people get back to work, not just provide free money. That's why there are job search requirements and work availability rules. It's temporary assistance while you look for new employment.

•Exactly! Some people think unemployment is welfare but it's insurance that workers pay into. There's a big difference.

•That makes me feel better about applying for it. I was worried it was like asking for charity.

If you're still confused about anything, the Washington ESD website has a lot of good information and FAQs. But like others mentioned, if you need to actually talk to someone, services like Claimyr can help you get through their phone system without spending hours on hold.
