What does disqualification mean on unemployment Washington ESD claim?
Just checked my claim status today and it shows 'disqualified' but I have no idea what that even means. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job searches like I'm supposed to. Got laid off from my warehouse job two months ago and everything seemed fine until now. Is this something I can fix or am I just screwed? Really stressed about this because I need these benefits to pay rent.

Disqualification means Washington ESD has determined you don't meet the eligibility requirements for some reason. Could be related to your job separation, not meeting work search requirements, or failing to report something correctly. You should have received a determination letter explaining the specific reason.

•I haven't gotten any letter yet, should I be worried? How long do those usually take to arrive?

•They're supposed to mail it within a few days of the disqualification. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for any correspondence or issues that need attention.

happened to me last year and it was because they said I quit instead of being laid off. Had to appeal it with documentation from my employer to prove I was actually laid off due to lack of work

•Oh no, how long did the appeal take? I'm already behind on bills and can't afford to wait months.

•took about 6 weeks but I got backpay for everything once they reversed it

You need to call Washington ESD immediately to find out the exact reason. Don't wait for the letter if you haven't received it yet. The sooner you understand what happened, the sooner you can start working on a solution or filing an appeal if necessary.

•I've been trying to call for days but can never get through. The line is always busy or I get disconnected after waiting forever.

•Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent. I found out about it when I was having similar issues reaching Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Made getting through to resolve my claim status so much easier.

•Never heard of that before but I'm desperate at this point. Thanks for the suggestion!

DISQUALIFICATION IS WASHINGTON ESD'S WAY OF SCREWING PEOPLE OVER! They disqualify people for the smallest reasons and make it nearly impossible to appeal. I got disqualified because I supposedly didn't report work during a week when I didn't even work at all. Took me 3 months to get it sorted out.

•That's horrible but at least you eventually got it resolved. Did you have to provide a bunch of documentation?

•Had to get letters from my employer, bank statements, everything. Total nightmare but worth fighting if you know you're right.

Most common reasons for disqualification include voluntary quit, being fired for misconduct, not being able and available for work, or not meeting work search requirements. Without seeing your determination, it's hard to say which category yours falls into.

•I definitely didn't quit and wasn't fired for misconduct. I've been doing my 3 job searches every week and marking myself as able and available. This is so confusing.

•Sometimes employers contest claims or provide information that conflicts with what you reported. That could trigger an adjudication that results in disqualification if they determine the employer's version is more credible.

•My old boss was pretty bitter about having to lay people off, wouldn't surprise me if he said something to mess with my claim.

same thing happened to my sister but it turned out to be a mistake on Washington ESD's part

The good news is that most disqualifications can be appealed if you have valid grounds. You typically have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal, so don't delay once you get that letter or figure out what's going on.

•30 days isn't very long, especially if I'm still trying to figure out why I got disqualified in the first place.

•Exactly why you need to get on the phone with them ASAP or find another way to get through to an agent who can explain the situation.

Check if you have any 'fact finding' items in your account that you might have missed. Sometimes they send questionnaires about your job separation or work availability that if you don't respond to can result in automatic disqualification.

•I'll check that right now, I might have missed something in all the different sections of the website.

•Yeah the Washington ESD website isn't the most user-friendly. Look under 'Correspondence' and 'To Do List' sections.

I got disqualified because I started school and they said I wasn't available for work even though I was only taking evening classes. Had to prove my class schedule didn't interfere with normal work hours.

•I'm not in school so that's not my issue, but good to know they're picky about stuff like that.

•They are super strict about the 'able and available' requirement. Even things like having limited transportation or childcare issues can sometimes lead to disqualification.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims even while disqualified. If you win an appeal, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you continued to file during the disqualification period.

Anastasia Kuznetsov
•Really? I assumed there was no point in filing if I'm disqualified.

Zoe Papadakis
•Nope, keep filing! It protects your right to backpay if the disqualification gets overturned. Very important detail that not everyone knows.

had something similar happen and Claimyr helped me get through to someone who could look at my account and explain what was going on. Saved me weeks of trying to call on my own.

•It's definitely worth trying if you can't get through the normal way. The phone system is just overwhelmed most of the time.

Sometimes disqualification happens if your employer reports that you were offered work and refused it, or if there are issues with your work search activities. Make sure you have documentation of all your job applications.
0 coins
Anastasia Kuznetsov
•I've been keeping track of all my applications in a spreadsheet, so I have that covered at least.

Mei Chen
•Good! That documentation will be crucial if you need to appeal or explain your job search efforts to an agent.

the worst part about disqualification is how they don't always tell you right away why it happened

Anastasia Kuznetsov
•Exactly! I'm sitting here trying to guess what I might have done wrong.

•That's why getting someone on the phone is so important. They can see notes and details in your account that aren't visible to you online.

I work as an HR manager and I've seen cases where employees think they were laid off but the company coded it differently in their system. Could be a miscommunication between you and your employer about the reason for separation.
0 coins
Anastasia Kuznetsov
•That's actually possible. The whole layoff situation was pretty chaotic with multiple people being let go at once.

•Might be worth contacting your former HR department to verify how they reported your separation to Washington ESD. Sometimes it's an honest mistake on their end.

Don't panic yet. I've seen plenty of disqualifications get reversed once people provide the right information or documentation. The key is acting quickly and being persistent about getting answers.

•That's the right attitude. Most of these issues are solvable if you stay on top of them and don't give up.
