NYS Department of Labor showing disqualification on my unemployment claim - need help understanding why
Just checked my unemployment account this morning and it shows 'disqualification' but I have no idea what I did wrong. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and doing my job searches like I'm supposed to. There's no explanation anywhere on the NYS Department of Labor website about what specifically caused this. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm really stressed because I need these benefits to pay rent. How do I find out what the disqualification is for?

There are several reasons NYS Department of Labor might disqualify you - it could be related to your separation from work, failing to meet work search requirements, or an issue with your weekly claims. You should have received a determination letter explaining the specific reason. Check your mail and also look in your online account under 'correspondence' or 'documents' section.

•I haven't gotten any letter yet, been checking my mail every day. I'll look for the correspondence section online, didn't know that existed. Thanks!

same thing happened to me last year, turned out they said I quit my job voluntarily even though I was laid off. Had to appeal it with documentation from my employer

•How long did the appeal take? I was definitely laid off, not fired or quit.

•took about 6 weeks for the hearing, then another 2 weeks for the decision. but I got all my back pay once it was approved

You need to call NYS Department of Labor directly to get specifics about your disqualification. The automated system won't tell you much, but an agent can explain exactly what triggered it. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone (which happens a lot), I recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to someone about our own benefits

•I agree it's frustrating that we need outside help, but when you're facing a disqualification and potential loss of benefits, sometimes you need to explore all options to get answers quickly.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! They disqualify people for the stupidest reasons and never explain properly. I bet it's some technicality in how you answered one of the weekly questions. They're looking for any excuse to deny claims these days.

•yeah it's really frustrating but usually there is a real reason, just poorly communicated

Check if you accidentally answered 'yes' to working or earning money when you didn't, or if you missed reporting some part-time work. Even small mistakes on weekly claims can trigger disqualifications. The good news is most of these can be fixed if you catch them early and provide the correct information.
