why was i disqualified for unemployment NYS Department of Labor - no explanation given

Got a letter from NYS Department of Labor saying my unemployment claim is disqualified but they didn't give me any real explanation. Just says I'm "not eligible for benefits at this time" and something about work separation. I was laid off from my warehouse job in December and thought everything would be straightforward. I've been filing my weekly claims and doing the job search stuff like I'm supposed to. Has this happened to anyone else? I really need to understand what went wrong because I can't afford to be without these benefits.

Disqualifications usually fall into a few main categories - work separation issues (like if they think you quit or were fired for misconduct), not meeting work requirements, or not being able and available for work. Check your separation information on the my.ny.gov portal under claim details. Sometimes employers contest claims and provide different information than what you initially reported. You should have appeal rights listed on that disqualification letter.

I checked and it just shows 'separation under review' but no details. My employer definitely laid me off though, I have the paperwork. How long do appeals usually take?

This exact thing happened to me last year! Turned out my old boss told NYS Department of Labor I was fired for attendance when I was actually laid off. I had to appeal and provide my layoff documentation. The key is getting through to an actual person at NYS Department of Labor to find out what your employer reported. I spent weeks trying to call before I found claimyr.com - they got me connected to an agent in like 30 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service but honestly anything that helps get through to NYS Department of Labor sounds worth trying. Those phone lines are impossible.

ugh this is so frustrating!! i got disqualified too and still don't know why. been waiting 3 weeks for someone to call me back. the whole system is broken and they don't care about people who actually need help. sorry i don't have answers but you're not alone in this mess

I understand the frustration, but don't give up on the appeal process. Most disqualifications can be overturned if you have the right documentation and can present your case properly.

Same thing here - disqualified with no clear reason. In my case it was because I had worked part-time while collecting benefits months ago and apparently didn't report it correctly on my weekly claims. Even though I thought I was doing everything right. The adjudication process took forever and then boom - disqualified. Now I'm appealing but who knows how long that will take.

Oh no, I did work a few days at a temp job last month. I reported it on my weekly claim but maybe I did something wrong?

Most common reasons for disqualification: 1) employer disputed your separation reason, 2) earnings not reported correctly on weekly claims, 3) not meeting work search requirements, 4) not available for work. You need to request a copy of your claim file from NYS Department of Labor to see exactly what triggered the disqualification. Then you can prepare a proper appeal with supporting documents.
