Why was my Washington ESD unemployment disqualified - no explanation given
Got a letter yesterday saying my unemployment claim was disqualified but it doesn't really explain why. I filed about 6 weeks ago after getting laid off from my warehouse job due to company downsizing. I've been doing my weekly claims and job searches like I'm supposed to. The letter just says 'disqualified for benefits' with some reference numbers but no clear reason. Has anyone else dealt with this? I need to know what happened so I can figure out if I should appeal or what. Really stressed because I was counting on these benefits to pay rent.

There's usually a reason code on the disqualification letter. Look for something like 'Separation Issues' or 'Able and Available' - these are the most common reasons Washington ESD disqualifies claims. Can you find any specific codes or references on your paperwork?

•I see a code that says 'RCW 50.20.066' - what does that mean exactly?

•That's usually related to separation issues - they might be questioning whether you were actually laid off versus quit or fired. Did you have any workplace incidents before the layoff?

same thing happened to me last year - turned out they needed more info about my last day of work and I never got the request for additional documentation. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for any pending items

•Just checked and there's nothing showing as pending. This is so frustrating - how are we supposed to know what's wrong if they don't tell us?

Washington ESD disqualifications often happen when there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported. They might have said you quit or were fired for misconduct instead of laid off. You definitely need to call them to get the specific reason, but good luck getting through - their phone lines are always jammed.

•I've been trying to call for two days straight and can't even get on hold. Just keeps saying high call volume and hangs up on me.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's usually the best time to get through to an actual person

If you can't get through by phone, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people reach Washington ESD agents. I used it when I was stuck in adjudication hell for weeks. They have this system that keeps calling until they can get you connected to someone who can actually explain what's going on with your claim. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before - is it legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real - they just help you get through to Washington ESD's actual phone system, nothing sketchy about it. Way better than spending hours redialing yourself.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST! They disqualify people left and right with no explanation and then make it impossible to reach anyone to fix it. I swear they do this on purpose to save money by making people give up on their claims.

•I feel your pain but getting angry won't help OP figure out what happened to their claim

•You're right, just so frustrated with this whole system. OP - definitely appeal if you think you were wrongly disqualified, but do it within 30 days

Whatever the reason for disqualification, you have appeal rights. The letter should have information about how to request an appeal hearing. You typically have 30 days from the date on the letter to file your appeal, so don't wait too long while trying to reach them by phone.

•Good point - I should probably file the appeal just to be safe while I try to figure out what happened. Can I do that online?

Rachel Tao
•Yes, you can usually file appeals through your SecureAccess Washington account, but make sure you understand the reason first so you can address it properly in your appeal.

Check if there was any confusion about your availability for work. Sometimes they disqualify people who they think aren't actively looking for work or available to start immediately. Did you mention anything about being picky about jobs or having scheduling restrictions?

•I don't think so - I've been applying to everything I can find and logging it all in WorkSourceWA like they require

could be an issue with your work history verification too. sometimes employers don't respond to washington esd requests for info and they just disqualify by default

•That would be just my luck - getting screwed because my old employer didn't fill out paperwork properly

•If that's the case, you can provide your own documentation like pay stubs, W-2s, or termination letter during the appeal process

I had a friend who got disqualified because Washington ESD thought she had moved out of state when she just changed her address within Washington. Make sure all your personal info is correct in the system.

•I did move apartments recently but stayed in the same city - could that have caused issues?

Derek Olson
•Possibly, especially if there was a delay in updating your address with them. Definitely mention that when you talk to someone.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims even if you're disqualified. If you win your appeal, you'll need those weeks to get paid for the time you were wrongly denied.

•Really? I thought there was no point in filing if I'm disqualified. Thanks for that tip!

•Yeah, keep filing even if it feels pointless. The system will hold those weeks and if your appeal is successful, you'll get back pay for all of them.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when I couldn't reach Washington ESD about my adjudication issue. Worked great - got connected to an agent within a couple hours instead of spending days trying to call. Worth it when you need answers fast.

•How much does it cost? I'm already tight on money without my benefits

•It's reasonable for what it does - way cheaper than missing rent because you can't get your claim sorted out. Check their site for current pricing.

The most common disqualification reasons I've seen are: 1) Employer disputed the reason for separation 2) Questions about work availability 3) Issues with job search requirements 4) Problems with identity verification. Any of these ring a bell for your situation?

Sayid Hassan
•Maybe the employer dispute thing - my supervisor who laid me off was pretty unhappy about having to let people go. Is it possible he told them something different?
0 coins
Alberto Souchard
•Absolutely possible. Employers sometimes claim people quit or were fired to avoid their unemployment tax rates going up. This is exactly the kind of thing you'd need to address in an appeal.

been there done that with washington esd disqualification - turned out they wanted proof of my identity and i never got the letter asking for it. mail delivery issues can cause all sorts of problems with benefits

•I've been having mail problems at my new apartment - maybe that's part of it. How did you prove your identity to them?

Don't panic yet - disqualifications can often be reversed if there was a misunderstanding or missing information. The key is getting the specific reason and addressing it properly. Focus on getting through to someone who can explain exactly what triggered the disqualification.

If you do use Claimyr or manage to get through on your own, make sure to ask specifically: 1) What was the exact reason for disqualification 2) What evidence do they have 3) What you need to provide to overturn it 4) Timeline for appeal process. Get everything in writing if possible.

•Great advice - I'll write these questions down so I don't forget them when I finally talk to someone

•Smart move. When you're stressed about money it's easy to forget important details during the call.

File that appeal ASAP regardless of what the phone agent tells you. Sometimes they'll say your case looks fine and they'll fix it, but then nothing happens. Having an appeal pending protects your rights and creates a paper trail.

•Good point - better safe than sorry. I'll file it today and then try to get more details about what went wrong.

this whole thread is making me nervous about my own claim that's been in adjudication for weeks. washington esd really needs to get their act together with communication

Sayid Hassan
•Hang in there - at least yours is still being processed. Mine got straight up denied with no explanation.

•Adjudication usually means they're still investigating, which is different from a disqualification. Keep filing your weekly claims while you wait.

I'm seeing more and more of these mysterious disqualifications lately. Wonder if Washington ESD changed their review process or if they're just overwhelmed and making more mistakes. Either way, definitely appeal if you think you qualify for benefits.

•That's what I'm thinking - this seems like it could be an error since I was clearly laid off through no fault of my own

Final update - I used Claimyr this morning and finally got connected to a Washington ESD agent. Turns out my employer had reported that I was fired for attendance issues instead of laid off due to downsizing. Complete lie but now I know what I'm dealing with. Filing my appeal with documentation that proves the real reason I lost my job. Thanks everyone for the help and advice!

•Glad you got answers! That's exactly the kind of employer dispute I was talking about. Make sure to include any documentation about the layoffs, emails about downsizing, etc.
