Why did I get disqualified for unemployment - Washington ESD gave no clear reason
I got a letter from Washington ESD saying my unemployment claim has been disqualified but the reason they gave is super vague. It just says 'failure to meet eligibility requirements' but doesn't specify what I did wrong. I was laid off from my retail job in December and have been filing my weekly claims on time, doing my job searches, and reporting everything accurately. Has anyone else gotten one of these generic disqualification letters? How do I find out the actual reason so I can appeal it? This is really stressing me out because I need these benefits to pay rent.

You should have received a determination letter that explains the specific reason for disqualification. Check your SecureAccess Washington account online - sometimes the detailed determination shows up there before the physical letter arrives. Common reasons include issues with your separation from employment, not meeting work search requirements, or availability issues.

•I checked SAW but it just shows the same vague message. Should I call Washington ESD to get more details?

•Yes, definitely call them. You have the right to know the specific reason for disqualification before your appeal deadline.

This happened to me too! I was so confused because I thought I was doing everything right. Turns out there was an issue with how my employer reported my separation - they said I quit when I was actually laid off.

•Oh wow, how did you find that out? Did Washington ESD tell you or did you have to dig for it?

•I had to call multiple times before someone finally explained it to me. The first few reps just read the same generic info from my file.

Getting through to Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible these days. I've been trying for weeks about my own claim issues. You might want to try Claimyr - it's a service that helps you actually connect with ESD agents. I found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals and dropped calls.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I used Claimyr too after getting frustrated with the phone system. It actually worked and I got my adjudication issue resolved.

Did you report any work during your claim period? Even small gig work or temporary jobs can cause issues if not reported correctly. Washington ESD is really strict about that stuff.

•I did some DoorDash a few times but I reported all of it on my weekly claims. Could that be the issue?

Chloe Wilson
•Possibly! Make sure you reported the gross earnings, not net. And if you didn't report it the right week it was earned, that could trigger a disqualification.

The Washington ESD system is so messed up right now. I know three people who got disqualified for no clear reason and had to appeal to get it fixed. The appeals process takes forever too.

•How long does the appeal process usually take? I'm already behind on bills.

•From what I've seen, anywhere from 6-12 weeks. But you have to file the appeal within 30 days of the disqualification notice or you lose your chance.

•That's why it's so important to get the real reason for disqualification ASAP. Can't file a proper appeal without knowing what you're appealing.

Check if there's an adjudication issue on your claim. Sometimes what looks like a disqualification is actually just a pending adjudication that hasn't been resolved yet. Log into your SAW account and look at your claim status details.

Isabella Silva
•It definitely says disqualified, not pending adjudication. But I'll double check all the details in my account.

Another thing to check - did your employer contest your claim? Sometimes employers will fight unemployment claims even for legitimate layoffs to keep their UI tax rates down.

Isabella Silva
•How would I know if they contested it? Would that show up somewhere in my account?

CosmosCaptain
•Not always. That's another reason you need to talk to an actual Washington ESD agent to get the full story about your disqualification.

I was disqualified because I didn't respond to a request for information that I never received. Check your mail and email for any notices from Washington ESD that you might have missed. They're really bad about sending stuff to outdated addresses.

Isabella Silva
•I've been checking both regularly but I'll go through everything again just in case.

•Make sure your address is current in your SAW account. I've seen people miss important notices because of address issues.

The job search requirements changed recently too. You need to make 3 job contacts per week now and keep detailed records. If your job search log doesn't meet the new requirements, that could be the issue.

•I've been doing 3 contacts per week and logging them in WorkSourceWA. But maybe I wasn't detailed enough?

•They want specific details - company name, position applied for, date, method of contact. Generic entries can cause problems.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with government agencies. They disqualify you but won't tell you why, then make YOU jump through hoops to figure it out. It's backwards.

•I get the frustration but they are legally required to provide a reason. The problem is sometimes it takes multiple calls to get someone who will actually explain it properly.

Seriously, try Claimyr if you can't get through on the phone. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's not free but way cheaper than missing more benefit payments while you wait weeks to get through. Check their website for current pricing.

Document everything from now on. Save screenshots of your SAW account, keep copies of all correspondence, and write down the dates and times of any phone calls you make. You'll need this if you end up in an appeal hearing.

•Good advice, I'll start doing that immediately.

One more thing to check - are you sure you met the monetary eligibility requirements? You need to have earned enough in your base period to qualify. The disqualification could be related to insufficient wages.
0 coins
Isabella Silva
•I was approved initially and have been receiving benefits for a few weeks, so I think my monetary eligibility was fine.
0 coins
Anastasia Romanov
•Then it's probably a non-monetary issue like separation reason or ongoing eligibility. Definitely need to get the specific details from Washington ESD.

File your appeal immediately even if you don't know the exact reason yet. You can always provide more details later, but if you miss the 30-day deadline you're screwed.

•Can I appeal without knowing the specific reason? Won't that hurt my case?

Zara Malik
•You can file a general appeal stating you disagree with the disqualification and request more information about the reasons. Better safe than sorry with the deadline.

I had luck calling right when they open at 8am. Still took a while but better than calling in the middle of the day. Although honestly, Claimyr was much easier when I tried that route.

•I'll try the early morning calling and also look into Claimyr as a backup plan.

Keep filing your weekly claims even while disqualified! If you win your appeal, you'll get back pay for those weeks, but only if you kept filing.

Isabella Silva
•Really? The system will let me file even though I'm disqualified?
0 coins
CosmosCaptain
•Yes, you should still be able to file. It protects your claim for those weeks in case your appeal is successful.

Washington ESD is such a nightmare to deal with. I've been fighting with them for months over different issues. The whole system needs an overhaul.

•It's definitely frustrating but there are ways to navigate it. The key is persistence and knowing your rights.

Make sure when you do talk to an agent that you ask for a supervisor if the first person can't give you detailed information. Sometimes the front-line staff don't have access to all the details about why claims get disqualified.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm going to try calling early tomorrow and if that doesn't work I'll check out the Claimyr service.

Good luck! Don't give up. I know several people who got their disqualifications overturned on appeal once they figured out what the real issue was.

Isabella Silva
•That gives me hope. I'll keep fighting it.

Just remember, you have rights as a claimant. Washington ESD has to provide you with a clear explanation of why you were disqualified. Don't let them brush you off with vague responses.

•I'll be persistent and demand a clear explanation. Thanks everyone for all the help and advice!

I went through something similar last year and it turned out to be a timing issue with when I reported some part-time work. Even though I reported it, I had reported it in the wrong week (when I got paid vs when I actually worked), which triggered an automatic disqualification. The system flagged it as unreported income even though I had been honest about everything. Once I explained the timing mix-up during my appeal, they reversed the disqualification and I got all my back pay. Definitely push for specific details about what triggered yours - there's always a reason in their system, even if the letter doesn't explain it clearly.
