Why is my unemployment claim disqualified - Washington ESD gave no clear reason
Got a letter from Washington ESD yesterday saying my unemployment claim is disqualified but they didn't give me a clear explanation of why. The letter just says 'disqualified for benefits' and mentions some policy numbers. I was laid off from my restaurant job in December and thought I did everything right when I filed. Has anyone else gotten one of these vague disqualification letters? I'm really confused about what I did wrong and how to fix this.

Washington ESD disqualifications usually fall into a few categories - either they think you quit instead of being laid off, you didn't meet the earnings requirements, or there's an issue with your job search activities. Did you get any kind of fact-finding questionnaire before this decision?

•No questionnaire that I remember. I definitely was laid off though - my manager told me they were cutting staff due to slow business.

•You should call Washington ESD to get the specific reason. The policy numbers on your letter will tell them exactly what triggered the disqualification.

same thing happened to me last year, turned out there was some issue with how my employer reported my termination to washington esd. took forever to get through on the phone though

•How long did it take you to reach someone? I've been trying to call for days.

•honestly like 3 weeks of calling every day. the phone system is terrible

I had success using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I had a similar disqualification issue. Instead of spending hours on hold, they connected me with an agent who could explain exactly why I was disqualified and what I needed to do to appeal. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ - it's pretty straightforward.

•Is that a paid service? I'm already struggling financially.

•Yeah there's a cost but honestly saved me weeks of trying to call on my own. You can check their site at claimyr.com for details. For me it was worth it to get my benefits restored quickly.

•Never heard of this but might be worth looking into. I've been calling Washington ESD for 2 weeks straight with no luck.

WASHINGTON ESD DISQUALIFICATION REASONS ARE NEVER CLEAR! They do this on purpose to make you give up. Most common reasons are: 1) Employer disputed your layoff claim 2) Insufficient earnings in base period 3) Failure to register with WorkSource 4) Not actively seeking work. You need to appeal within 30 days!

•I did register with WorkSource and I've been applying for jobs. How do I prove that to them?

Liam Fitzgerald
•You need your job search log and documentation of your WorkSource registration. Keep everything documented!

Wait, did you work enough hours to qualify? Washington ESD has specific earnings requirements. You need to have earned at least 680 hours or $5,265 in your base period to qualify for benefits.

•I think so? I worked full time at the restaurant for about 8 months before getting laid off.

GalacticGuru
•That should be enough. Definitely sounds like either an employer dispute or some kind of administrative error.

this is so frustrating!! i hate how washington esd makes everything so complicated. why cant they just tell you straight up what the problem is???

AstroAdventurer
•Exactly! The letter is basically useless.

•I know it's frustrating but there are usually legal reasons they have to use specific language in these notices.

Check your online account on the Washington ESD website. Sometimes there are additional details there that aren't in the mailed letter. Look for any outstanding issues or requests for information.

•Good idea, I'll log in and check right now.

•Also look for any correspondence section - sometimes they send messages through the portal that explain more.

You absolutely need to appeal this decision. Don't wait - you only have 30 days from the date on the letter. Even if you're not sure why you were disqualified, you can appeal and they'll have to provide more details during the appeal process.

•How do I file an appeal? Is there a form I need to fill out?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•Yes, there should be appeal instructions on the back of your disqualification letter. You can also do it online through your Washington ESD account.

I work in HR and see this all the time. Often it's because the employer reported you as 'voluntary quit' instead of 'laid off' when they filed their paperwork with Washington ESD. This is super common and usually an honest mistake, but it triggers an automatic disqualification.

•That could be it! My manager was pretty scattered when they were doing the layoffs. How would I prove I was actually laid off?

•Get any documentation you have - text messages, emails, or written notice about the layoff. Also contact your former coworkers who were laid off at the same time as witnesses.

definitely sounds like an employer reporting issue to me. happened to my brother too - his old job accidentally marked him as 'quit' and he had to fight it for months

•Months?? That's terrifying. I can't go that long without income.

•he eventually got all his back pay but yeah it was a nightmare. thats why getting through to washington esd quickly is so important

Another possibility - did you have any gaps in employment before your restaurant job? Washington ESD looks at your entire base period, not just your most recent job. If there were long periods without work, that could affect your eligibility.

AstroAdventurer
•I did have a few months gap between my previous job and the restaurant. I was doing some gig work but nothing steady.

Sofia Morales
•Gig work often doesn't count toward unemployment eligibility unless you were paying into the system. That might be part of the issue.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr suggestion - I used them again last week for a different issue and they're still working great. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes who was able to explain exactly what was happening with my claim. Definitely worth considering if you're getting nowhere with regular calling.

•I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Regular calling is just impossible.

•I totally get it. The regular phone system is basically broken. At least with Claimyr you know you'll actually talk to someone.

The Washington ESD disqualification letters are intentionally vague because they're generated automatically by the computer system. The real details are in the case notes that only the agents can see. That's why you HAVE to talk to a human to get the full story.
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•That's so frustrating! Why can't they just include those details in the letter?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Probably legal liability reasons. They don't want to put specific details in writing that could be used against them later.

Whatever you do, don't ignore this. Even if you think the disqualification is wrong, you need to either appeal it or get it resolved somehow. It won't just go away on its own.

AstroAdventurer
•I'm definitely not ignoring it! Just trying to figure out the best way to handle it.

•Good. I've seen too many people assume these things will sort themselves out and then lose their right to appeal.

question - when you filed your initial claim did you answer all the questions about why you left your last job? sometimes people accidentally select the wrong reason and it triggers a disqualification
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•I think I answered everything correctly but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there a way to see what I originally put?
0 coins
Miguel Silva
•you should be able to see your original application in your online account. look for something like 'claim details' or 'application summary

I had a similar disqualification last year and it turned out to be because I hadn't completed my WorkSource registration properly. Even though I thought I had registered, there was some step I missed. Once I fixed that, my benefits were restored.

AstroAdventurer
•I'll double-check my WorkSource registration. Maybe there's something I missed there too.

Zainab Ismail
•Yeah, it's worth checking. The WorkSource website can be confusing and it's easy to think you're done when you're not.

The whole Washington ESD system is broken honestly. They disqualify people left and right for stupid reasons and then make it impossible to get help. It's like they want people to give up.
0 coins
AstroAdventurer
•It definitely feels that way sometimes.

Andre Dupont
•I understand the frustration but there are usually legitimate reasons for disqualifications. The system could definitely be more user-friendly though.

Try calling first thing in the morning right when they open. I've had better luck getting through around 8am than later in the day.

AstroAdventurer
•I'll try that tomorrow morning. What number do you call?

QuantumQuester
•The main customer service line - 800-318-6022. But honestly even early morning can be hit or miss.

UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service mentioned earlier and finally got through to Washington ESD! Turns out my employer did report me as 'quit' instead of 'laid off' which triggered the automatic disqualification. The agent helped me file an appeal and said it should be resolved within 2-3 weeks. Thanks everyone for the help!
