Why am I disqualified for unemployment Washington ESD - no clear explanation given
Got a letter from Washington ESD yesterday saying my claim is disqualified but the reason code doesn't make any sense to me. It says something about 'voluntary quit without good cause' but I was laid off due to budget cuts at my company. I have the termination letter proving I didn't quit. Has anyone else dealt with Washington ESD making this kind of mistake? I'm really confused about why I would be disqualified when I clearly qualify for benefits.

This happens more often than it should. Washington ESD sometimes gets incomplete information from employers or there's a miscommunication during the initial claim interview. Did you mention anything during your phone interview about being unhappy at work or looking for other jobs before the layoff?

•I did mention that the workplace had been stressful lately, but I never said I wanted to quit. Could that have caused the confusion?

•Yes, that could definitely be misinterpreted by the adjudicator. They sometimes focus on keywords like 'stressful' and assume voluntary separation.

same thing happened to me last year!! took forever to get through to someone at washington esd to explain what actually happened

•How did you finally reach them? I've been trying to call for days but keep getting the busy signal.

•honestly i used this service called claimyr.com that helped me get through. there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. saved me hours of calling

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? I'm getting desperate here.

You need to file an appeal immediately. Washington ESD disqualification appeals have a strict 30-day deadline from the date on your determination letter. Don't wait - even if you think you can resolve it by phone, file the appeal as backup protection.

•Where do I file the appeal? Is it online or do I need to mail something?

Beatrice Marshall
•You can file online through your Washington ESD account or mail the appeal form. Online is faster and you get confirmation. Include copies of your termination letter and any other documentation proving you were laid off.

•Also make sure to keep filing your weekly claims while the appeal is pending, even though you're disqualified right now.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! Washington ESD is so incompetent it's not even funny. They disqualified me for 'job abandonment' when I was literally in the hospital for a week and got fired for missing work due to medical emergency.

•That's insane! Did you win your appeal?

•Yeah but it took 3 months and I almost lost my apartment waiting for backpay. The whole system is broken.

•Three months?? That's ridiculous. I can't wait that long for this to get sorted out.

Check what your employer reported to Washington ESD. Sometimes companies report things incorrectly to avoid paying higher unemployment taxes. You can request the employer's response from your adjudication file.

Gemma Andrews
•How do I request that information? Is there a specific form?

•Call Washington ESD and ask for a copy of your adjudication file. They should provide all the information used to make the disqualification decision, including what your employer reported.

•I keep trying but can never get through on the phone.

•Try that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. I used it last month when I couldn't reach them about my adjudication delay. Actually worked pretty well.

What was the exact reason code on your disqualification letter? Washington ESD uses specific codes and some are easier to overturn than others.

Gemma Andrews
•It says RCW 50.20.050 - voluntary leaving without good cause. But I have proof I was laid off!
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•That's a standard voluntary quit code. Definitely sounds like miscommunication during your fact-finding interview or employer gave wrong information. Your termination letter should be enough to overturn this.

Beatrice Marshall
•Agreed. RCW 50.20.050 disqualifications for layoffs are usually overturned quickly once proper documentation is provided.

This is why I hate dealing with government agencies. They never get anything right the first time and then make YOU prove they screwed up.

•Tell me about it. Spent 6 weeks fighting a similar issue last year.

•Did you eventually get it resolved?

Jake Sinclair
•Yeah but only after filing an appeal. Phone calls didn't accomplish anything.

Make sure you have all your documentation ready before you appeal - termination letter, final paycheck stub showing your last day worked, any emails about the layoff, etc. The more proof you have, the faster the appeal gets resolved.

•I have the termination letter and my final paycheck. Should that be enough?

Brielle Johnson
•That should definitely be sufficient to show you were involuntarily separated. Make sure the dates match up between the documents.

honestly if you can't get through by phone just file the appeal online and attach your termination letter. washington esd appeals are usually pretty straightforward for obvious mistakes like this

•That might be my best option at this point. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I work in HR and see this happen occasionally. Sometimes during the separation paperwork process, there's confusion about whether someone resigned or was terminated. Your employer might have reported it wrong to Washington ESD initially.
0 coins
Gemma Andrews
•That makes sense. My manager seemed flustered when doing the paperwork since they had to lay off several people at once.
0 coins
Mary Bates
•Exactly. Mass layoffs often result in paperwork errors. Your termination letter should clear this up quickly during the appeal process.

Just went through this exact situation 2 months ago. Filed my appeal online with my termination docs and got approved within 2 weeks. Don't stress too much - these mistakes get fixed.
0 coins
Gemma Andrews
•That's reassuring! Did you keep filing weekly claims while waiting?
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Yes, definitely keep filing even though you're disqualified. When they approve your appeal you'll get backpay for all the weeks you filed.

•This is important - don't skip weekly claims during the appeal or you won't get paid for those weeks even if you win.

I'm curious - did Washington ESD send you any fact-finding questionnaires before the disqualification? Usually they try to get both sides of the story first.

Gemma Andrews
•I got a phone interview about a week after filing, but the connection was bad and I had trouble understanding some questions.

Lorenzo McCormick
•That might be where the confusion happened. Phone interviews can be tricky and adjudicators sometimes make assumptions based on unclear responses.

Whatever you do, don't wait around hoping this gets fixed automatically. Washington ESD doesn't proactively correct mistakes - you have to take action through the appeal process.

•Got it. I'm going to file the appeal today and try calling one more time with that Claimyr service people mentioned.

•Smart plan. Having both the appeal filed and speaking to someone directly gives you the best chance of quick resolution.

•Hang in there. Most people win appeals when they have clear documentation like you do.
