NYS Department of Labor sudden disqualification - why was I disqualified for unemployment this week?

I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now without any issues, filing my weekly claims on time and everything seemed fine. This morning I logged into my.ny.gov to check my payment status and it shows I was disqualified for this week. There's no explanation anywhere in my account about what happened or why. I didn't change anything about my job search or availability status. Has anyone else had their benefits suddenly cut off like this? I'm really confused because last week's claim went through normally and I got paid. Now I'm worried about what I did wrong.

Check your messages in the my.ny.gov portal - sometimes NYS Department of Labor sends notices there that explain disqualifications. Also look for any forms you might need to complete. Common reasons include missing job contacts, not being available for work, or earning too much money that week.

I checked messages and there's nothing new. My job search log is up to date with 3 contacts this week like always. This is so frustrating.

Did you report any earnings for that week? Even small amounts can sometimes trigger a disqualification if reported incorrectly. Also check if you answered the weekly questions differently - like saying you weren't available for work or turned down a job offer.

No earnings to report and I answered all the weekly questions the same way I always do. This doesn't make sense.

This happened to me last month! Turned out NYS Department of Labor flagged my claim for some random review and automatically disqualified me while they investigated. I had to call them to find out what was going on because nothing showed up online.

How long did it take to resolve? I've been trying to call but can't get through to anyone.

Took about 2 weeks total but once I got someone on the phone they fixed it pretty quick. The hard part is actually reaching them.

I had the same problem getting through to NYS Department of Labor when my claim got messed up. Ended up using this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to actual agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Is that one of those services that charges you? I'm already broke from this unemployment mess.

Yeah there's a fee but honestly it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting days trying to get through. They got me connected within like 30 minutes.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! They disqualify people for no reason and then make it impossible to reach anyone for help. I've been fighting a disqualification for 3 months now and still no resolution.

Same here, this is ridiculous. They owe me thousands at this point.

Before panicking, try logging out completely and logging back in. Sometimes the portal has display glitches. If it still shows disqualified, you'll need to call or request a hearing if no resolution through phone contact.

Good idea, I'll try that. Really hoping it's just a system error because I can't afford to lose these benefits right now.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Been collecting for about 2 months with no problems, then boom - disqualified out of nowhere this week. Like you, I can't find any explanation in my account and I didn't change anything about my job search or availability. It's so stressful not knowing what triggered it. I'm going to try the logout/login suggestion and then start calling tomorrow morning. Keep us posted on what you find out - maybe we can help each other figure this out.

@Lara Woods I'm so relieved to hear I'm not the only one dealing with this! It's terrifying when your benefits just disappear without warning. I tried the logout/login thing that @Makayla Shoemaker suggested but it still shows disqualified. I m'going to start calling first thing tomorrow too - maybe if we both keep trying we can get through faster. This whole system is so broken. Will definitely update here if I learn anything useful!
