Why is my unemployment claim disqualified - NYS Department of Labor never explained
Got a notice two days ago saying my unemployment claim is disqualified but there's literally no explanation anywhere. I've been filing my weekly claims for 6 weeks and everything seemed fine until this notice showed up. My ny.gov account just shows 'disqualified' with zero details about what I supposedly did wrong. I reported all my work correctly, did my job search requirements, answered all the questions honestly. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you even find out WHY you're disqualified when they don't tell you anything?

There are several common reasons for disqualification - voluntary quit without good cause, fired for misconduct, not available for work, or failing job search requirements. Check if there was a determination letter mailed to you that might have more details. You can also look in your correspondence section on the NYS Department of Labor website.

•I checked correspondence and there's nothing there except the basic disqualification notice. No determination letter that I can find.

this happened to me last year! turned out my former employer disputed my claim saying I was fired for attendance issues. I never got notified about the dispute until after I was already disqualified. You need to call and find out what's going on

•How did you get through to someone? I've been trying to call but the lines are always busy or I get disconnected.

•honestly I used this service called claimyr.com that calls for you and gets you through to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. costs money but saved me weeks of trying. there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works

Did you have any issues with your last employer? Sometimes employers contest claims weeks after you file and the NYS Department of Labor will disqualify you pending investigation. If that's the case, you'll need documentation to prove your side of the story during the adjudication process.

•My employer did have some issues with my performance but I wasn't fired, I was laid off due to budget cuts. Could they still contest it?

•Yes, employers can contest even layoffs if they claim it was actually termination for cause. You'll need to appeal the disqualification and provide evidence it was truly a layoff.

ugh the NYS Department of Labor is THE WORST at communicating anything!! they just send these vague notices and expect you to figure it out yourself. I went through something similar and it took 3 months to get it resolved

•Wait, three months?? I can't wait that long, I have rent due next week. Is there any way to speed this up?

same thing happened to my cousin except it was because she didn't do enough job searches one week. the system is super picky about that stuff
