What does it mean when you have disqualified week from unemployment - NYS Department of Labor

I just checked my payment history on my.ny.gov and noticed one of my weeks shows as 'disqualified' instead of paid. This happened about 3 weeks ago but I'm just seeing it now. I have no idea what this means or why it happened. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and reporting everything correctly. Does anyone know what causes a disqualified week and if I can get it fixed? I'm worried this might affect my future payments.

A disqualified week usually means NYS Department of Labor found an issue with your eligibility for that specific week. Common reasons include not meeting job search requirements, reporting work income incorrectly, or not being available for work. Check if you received any correspondence about that week - they should have sent a determination notice explaining why.

I haven't gotten any letters or emails about it. Should I call them to find out what happened?

same thing happened to me last year, turned out i forgot to do my job search activities that week and didnt realize it would disqualify the whole week

The job search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum. If you don't log them in the system by Sunday night when you file your weekly claim, that week gets automatically disqualified. You can appeal it if you actually did the activities but just forgot to log them.

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor about my disqualified weeks for months. The phone lines are always busy and when I finally got through they just told me to file an appeal online. Then I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Turned out my disqualification was a mistake and they fixed it right away once I could actually talk to someone.

Did you have to pay for that service? Seems sketchy to me...

Yeah there's a fee but it was worth it to finally get answers. The regular phone system is basically impossible to get through.

Check your correspondence section in your online account first. NYS Department of Labor is required to send you a notice explaining any disqualification. If there's no notice, it could be a system error. You have 30 days from the date of determination to file an appeal if you disagree with the disqualification.

I agree it's frustrating, but they are legally required to provide written notice of any disqualification with the specific reason. If you didn't receive one, definitely contact them to find out what happened.
