Why does my Washington ESD unemployment say disqualified week - need help understanding

I just checked my weekly claim status and it shows 'disqualified week' but I have no idea what that means or why it happened. I've been filing my weekly claims on time every Sunday and doing my job searches through WorkSource. Last week I reported working 2 days (16 hours) at a temp job and now this week shows disqualified. Did I mess something up? I'm really confused because I thought I was supposed to report all my work. Has anyone else seen this 'disqualified week' status before?

yeah i had that happen once when i reported work hours wrong, did you put the gross pay amount correctly?

0 coins

I think so? I put down $240 for the 16 hours at $15/hour. Maybe I should double check my math.

0 coins

The math looks right but make sure you're reporting the right week. If you worked Monday-Tuesday this week but reported it for last week's claim, that could cause issues.

A disqualified week usually means Washington ESD detected an issue with your eligibility for that specific week. Common reasons include: 1) Earnings over your weekly benefit amount, 2) Not meeting work search requirements, 3) Availability issues, or 4) Incorrect reporting of work/earnings. Since you mentioned working 16 hours, they might have calculated that your earnings exceeded your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

My weekly benefit amount is $285 so $240 shouldn't be over that limit right?

0 coins

You're right, $240 is under $285. But Washington ESD uses a formula - they deduct the first $5 from your earnings, then reduce your benefit by 75% of the remaining amount. So ($240-$5) x 0.75 = $176.25 reduction from your $285 benefit, leaving you eligible for $108.75 that week.

Wait that's confusing, if they're still eligible for money why would it show disqualified?

I've been dealing with Washington ESD phone issues for weeks trying to get through about my own claim problems. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing exactly how it works. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to someone about the disqualification.

0 coins

How much does that cost? I'm already strapped for cash with this unemployment thing.

0 coins

I'd rather pay a little to actually reach someone than waste hours trying to call for free and never getting through. The frustration alone was worth it for me.

0 coins

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST! I swear they disqualify people for breathing wrong. I've been fighting them for 2 months over stupid technicalities.

0 coins

same energy, they denied my claim because I didn't list a job search that I definitely did

0 coins

This is making me more nervous... I really need these benefits to pay rent

0 coins

Before panicking, log into your account and check if there's a determination letter or any notices explaining the disqualification. Sometimes it's a simple error that can be fixed by refiling the weekly claim with correct information.

0 coins

I don't see any letters in my account, just the disqualified status. Should I try refiling this week's claim?

0 coins

You can usually modify a weekly claim within a certain timeframe. Look for an option to 'restart' or 'modify' your weekly claim for that week.

0 coins

also check your work search log make sure you actually did the required searches that week

0 coins

I did 3 job searches through WorkSource like always, logged them all properly

0 coins

Could be an issue with how you answered the weekly claim questions. Did you mark that you were able and available to work? If you were sick or had any restrictions that week, that could trigger a disqualification.

0 coins

I always answer yes to able and available. I wasn't sick or anything that week.

0 coins

What about the question asking if you refused any work? Sometimes people accidentally click yes on that one.

0 coins

OH WAIT... I think I might have clicked wrong on that question. I was rushing through it Sunday night.

0 coins

That's probably it! If you accidentally indicated you refused work, that's an automatic disqualification for that week. The good news is this is usually fixable - you'll need to contact Washington ESD to explain it was an error in how you answered the question.

0 coins

How do I reach them though? I've tried calling like 50 times and never get through.

0 coins

Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's when I had the best luck getting through

0 coins

Had this exact same thing happen to me last month - accidentally clicked the wrong answer on the weekly claim. Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got through to fix it same day. Worth every penny when you're stressed about rent money.

0 coins

Did they make you wait long to get the week paid out after they fixed it?

0 coins

Nope, once they corrected it in the system it processed with my next weekly claim filing. Got paid for both weeks together.

0 coins

This is why I screenshot every single question and answer when I file my weekly claims now. Washington ESD system is glitchy and I don't trust it.

0 coins

smart idea! i should start doing that too

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely going to be more careful from now on. This scared me.

0 coins

Just want to add that you can also try the 'eServices' messaging option in your account, but in my experience phone calls get resolved way faster than the message system.

0 coins

I'll try the messaging too, can't hurt to have multiple attempts going

0 coins

update us when you get it sorted out! im curious how long it takes them to fix these kinds of mistakes

0 coins

Will do! Going to try calling first thing Monday morning and see what happens.

0 coins

If the calling doesn't work out, that Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much hassle.

0 coins

Question - when this gets fixed, will you get paid for the disqualified week or is that money just gone forever?

0 coins

If it was truly an error in how the weekly claim was answered, then yes, you should get paid for that week once it's corrected. Washington ESD will backdate the payment.

0 coins

That's a relief! I was worried I'd lost that money completely.

0 coins

This happened to my cousin too, turned out she put the wrong dates for when she worked. Make sure your work dates match exactly with the week you're claiming for.

0 coins

I'm pretty sure I had the dates right but I'll double check when I talk to them. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

Why is Washington ESD system so confusing?? Like why can't they just make it clearer what each question means

0 coins

EXACTLY! The whole system is designed to trip people up and deny benefits

0 coins

I mean, I get why they need to verify eligibility but yeah the questions could be worded better

0 coins

Good luck OP! Sounds like you figured out what went wrong which is half the battle. Getting through to fix it is the hard part but at least you know what to tell them now.

0 coins

Thanks everyone! This thread has been super helpful. I feel way less panicked now that I understand what probably happened.

0 coins

Make sure to file your weekly claim for this week correctly while you're waiting to get last week fixed. Don't want to create more problems.

0 coins

Good point! I'll be extra careful this Sunday when I file. Going to read every question twice.

0 coins

And maybe do it earlier in the day when you're not rushed like last time!

0 coins

Definitely! Sunday evening filing is clearly not working for me lol
