ESD backdate approval received - how long until payment hits bank account?

Finally got my backdate request approved for my unemployment claim from when I was laid off in February! The message appeared in my ESD account yesterday showing 'approved' status for weeks going back to Feb 12, 2025. I'm supposed to receive around $4800 for those missed weeks (after taxes), but there's no payment date listed. Anyone know how long it typically takes for the money to show up in my account after they approve a backdate request? I've got rent coming up and really need to plan my finances. This is my first time dealing with backdated payments.

Thanks! That's really helpful to know. Did you get all the weeks at once or did they come in separate payments?

It usually takes 2-5 business days for the funds to process once backdate approval happens. The system needs to run through payment processing cycles. You should see a payment date appear in your account within 48 hours, and then it typically takes another 1-3 business days for the direct deposit to complete. Keep checking your ESD account dashboard for the payment status changes. If you don't see movement after 3 business days, there might be an additional verification hold.

Really appreciate the detailed info. I'll keep an eye on the dashboard over the next few days. Hoping it processes before rent is due!

DID you file all those weekly claims for the backdated weeks????? they wont pay if you didnt do EACH WEEK individually. i had this problem and had to spend 3 hrs on the fone with them. the approval only means they approved the time period not that their actually paying you yet!!!!!

Oh crap, I think I did? When I got the backdate approval I had to fill out all those previous weekly claims one by one. It took forever. In my portal it shows all the weekly claims as "paid" with amounts, just no payment date.

Does anyone else think it's ridiculous how long this whole process takes? I had to wait 6 WEEKS just to get my backdate request reviewed, and then another week for the money. Meanwhile bills don't wait! The ESD system is totally broken. They expect us to file weekly claims on time but can't process their own payments promptly.

RIGHT?? And try getting anyone on the phone to ask about it. Impossible.

I've been through this twice. Here's what happens: The backdate approval just means they've approved your eligibility for those weeks. After that, the system processes the payments in batches. My experience last year was that they came in two separate deposits about 3 days apart, not all at once. Just a heads up so you're not surprised if you see partial payments come in.

That's good to know! I'll watch for multiple deposits then. Did they notify you when the payments were processed or did they just show up?

They just showed up. The ESD site updated with payment dates about a day before the deposits hit my account.

Thanks for the follow-up. I'll keep checking both the ESD site and my bank account.

Just a tip if you need to talk to someone at ESD about your payment status (which I recommend if nothing changes in 5 days) - I had a similar situation and couldn't get through their phone system for days. I finally used Claimyr.com which got me through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. The agent was able to tell me exactly when my backdate payment would process. Saved me a ton of anxiety.

Never heard of this service but I'll definitely keep it in mind if I don't see movement in my account by next week. The waiting and wondering is the worst part.

dont forget they take taxes out if u selected that option when u filed! my backdate amount was way less than i expected

Yeah, I did select to have taxes withheld. The $4800 I mentioned is after the tax withholding. Thanks for the reminder though!

mine took 10 days once and only 2 days another time... its totally random lol

Classic ESD inconsistency! They really need to standardize their processes better.
