ESD payment delay after claim approval - normal or problem?

My unemployment claim finally got approved yesterday after being stuck in adjudication for almost 3 weeks (what a relief!). The ESD website shows my weekly benefit amount is $752 and says my claim is now 'active' with no issues. But I haven't received any payments yet. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for the first payment to show up after approval? I was expecting it to be immediate or at least process overnight. My bank account is set up for direct deposit in the ESD system. Starting to worry since rent is due next week and I've been stretching my savings thin. Also, will they send all the backpay for the weeks I already filed while waiting for approval, or just start with this current week? My financial situation is getting pretty desperate so just trying to plan accordingly.

Payments usually hit accounts 2-3 business days after claim approval - mine took exactly 48 hours last time. Don't panic yet! And yes, they'll send all your backpay for the weeks you filed while in adjudication (as long as you did your weekly claims correctly). Make sure your direct deposit info is accurate because that's usually where delays happen.

Thank you! That's such a relief. I double-checked my direct deposit info and everything looks correct. I'll give it until Friday before I start worrying too much.

DONT TRUST THE WEBSITE!!!! Mine said "approved" for TWO WEEKS and I never got ANY MONEY!!! Had to CALL them multiple times before they fixed some "system glitch" they never even told me about. The website said everything was fine the whole time!!! They are LYING about your status half the time!!

Oh no, that's scary! Did you eventually get your payments? Was there something specific you had to say to get them to fix it?

Yeah I got paid EVENTUALLY but lost my apartment waiting! Had to call like 20 times before getting someone who actually knew what they were doing. Turns out there was some "identity verification flag" on my account that NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT.

Usually the first payment takes 3-5 business days after approval, but subsequent payments are faster (usually 2 days after filing your weekly claim). For backpay, yes - you'll receive all weeks you've claimed that were held during adjudication as long as you filed those weekly claims on time. Important: Check if your approval letter mentions any "waiting week." Washington state typically has a one-week waiting period where your first week of eligibility doesn't result in payment. This waiting week requirement has changed several times in the past few years, so worth confirming if it applies to your claim.

Thank you for the detailed information! I checked my approval letter and it does mention a waiting week. Does that mean I'll get paid for all the weeks except the very first one? That's frustrating but at least I know now.

Yes, exactly. You won't receive payment for that first week, but you should receive payment for all eligible weeks after that (assuming you've been filing weekly claims consistently and meeting the job search requirements of 3 activities per week). The waiting week is essentially a deductible built into the unemployment system.

When I got approved last month it took almost 2 weeks to get my first payment even though the website said everything was fine! I tried calling but couldnt get through for days. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes. There was a hold on my account that wasnt showing on the website! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Saved me weeks of waiting and frustration.

I've never heard of that service before. Did they actually solve your issue or just connect you to an agent? I'll give it a couple more days and might try that if nothing happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

They just connect you to an actual ESD agent (which is impossible to do normally). The agent fixed my issue in like 5 minutes once I got through. Turns out there was a flag on my account that wasn't showing up anywhere on the website.

Anyone know if its the same timeline for PUA claims? My regular UI was denied but I might qualify for PUA since I'm self-employed. My cousin said PUA takes longer to process payments.

PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) ended in September 2021. That program is no longer available. If you're self-employed, you should look into regular UI with an alternate base year calculation, or possibly DUA (Disaster Unemployment Assistance) if there's been a declared disaster in your area. But PUA specifically is no longer an active program.

Oh wow I had no idea! My cousin must have been talking about back when covid started. Thanks for letting me know!

To answer your original question: ESD processes payments in batches throughout the week. Here's what to expect: 1. First payments typically process within 2-5 business days after approval 2. Backpay for weeks you already claimed will come all at once (minus the waiting week if applicable) 3. Your ESD account will update to show "paid" before the money actually hits your bank 4. Direct deposit usually takes 24-48 hours after the payment shows as processed in your ESD account If you don't see any payment activity in your ESD account by Monday, that's when I'd recommend contacting them directly. The system occasionally needs manual review even after approval.

Thank you for the clear timeline! I checked my ESD account again and now it shows "processing payment" for some of the weeks, so at least something is happening. I'll wait until Monday before trying to contact them.

Just wanted to mention - make sure you keep doing your weekly claims even while waiting for the first payment! Some people think they only need to file after getting paid, but you need to keep certifying every week without interruption.

Yes, I've been filing every Sunday like clockwork! One question though - do I need to list the exact same job search activities in the same order each week? Or is it okay to switch them up as long as I'm doing the required three activities?

•

You should definitely switch them up! They want to see different job search activities each week. Mix in applying for jobs, updating your resume, attending WorkSource workshops, having informational interviews, etc. Using the exact same activities looks suspicious like you're not actually job searching.
