How long after Washington ESD approval do payments start coming?
My unemployment claim was finally approved yesterday after being stuck in adjudication for almost a month. The Washington ESD website shows my claim is now active and I can file weekly claims. But I'm wondering - how long does it actually take to get the first payment after approval? I've heard different things from people and I really need to know when I can expect money to hit my account. I have bills due next week and I'm getting stressed about the timing.

Usually takes about 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim for the payment to show up. Make sure you file your weekly claim on time - you can file starting Sunday for the previous week.

•Do I need to file for the weeks I was waiting for approval too, or just going forward?

•You should be able to file for all the back weeks since your claim start date. Check your account to see what weeks are available to claim.

•Thanks! Yeah the waiting was brutal. Did you get back pay for all the weeks you were waiting?

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on payment timing, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to actual agents without waiting on hold forever. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me when I needed to verify my payment method was correct.

•I've never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm always nervous about third-party services.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. You can check them out at claimyr.com. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get connected to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are crazy busy.

•I was skeptical too but used it last month when I couldn't get through to fix my direct deposit info. Worked perfectly and saved me hours of calling.

The payment timing depends on a few factors. If you set up direct deposit, it's usually faster - 2-3 business days. If you're getting a debit card, that can take longer initially because they have to mail the card first. Also make sure you've completed all the job search requirements for each week you're claiming.

•I have direct deposit set up already. What exactly are the job search requirements? I thought that didn't start until after a few weeks.

•In Washington you need to do 3 job search activities per week starting immediately. Check WorkSourceWA for approved activities. Keep detailed records because they audit claims randomly.

•wait I thought it was 5 job searches per week?? now i'm confused

•It's 3 per week for most people. The 5 requirement might be for certain programs or if you're in a specific category.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY WEEK ON TIME!!! I missed one week by a day and it messed up my whole payment schedule. Washington ESD is not forgiving about late weekly claims.

•Good to know! What's the deadline for filing weekly claims?

•You have to file by 11:59 PM Saturday for the previous week. I always do mine on Sunday morning to be safe.

Just a heads up - even after approval, payments can still get delayed if there are any flags on your account. I got approved but then my payments were held up because of some work I did during my waiting week that I reported.

•Oh no, that's my fear. How did you resolve it?

•Had to call and explain the situation. Took forever to get through though. This was before I knew about services like Claimyr that help you reach agents faster.

My experience was different - I got approved on a Wednesday and had money in my account by Friday. But I had already filed all my weekly claims during the adjudication period.

PrinceJoe
•Wait, you could file weekly claims while still in adjudication? I wasn't able to do that.

Vincent Bimbach
•Yeah it depends on the type of adjudication issue. Some people can file weekly claims while waiting, others can't until it's resolved.

•That's correct. If it's an identity verification issue you usually can't file. If it's about job separation reasons, sometimes you can still file weekly claims.

be careful about counting on exact timing... sometimes their system glitches and payments get delayed for no reason. happened to me twice

PrinceJoe
•Great, another thing to worry about! How do you find out if there's a system issue vs a problem with your claim?

Kelsey Chin
•usually they post notices on the washington esd website if there are system-wide issues

One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through my bank so I'd know the instant a deposit hit. Made the waiting less stressful.

•That's a good idea! I'm definitely going to set that up.

The worst part is that first payment because you're not sure if everything is working right. After that it becomes routine - file Sunday, get paid by Wednesday usually.

PrinceJoe
•Yeah I'm definitely overthinking this first payment. Just need to get through this initial period.

•Totally understandable. The whole unemployment system is stressful enough without having to wonder about payment timing.

Pro tip: if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your payments, try calling right at 8 AM when they open. That's when you have the best chance of getting through without waiting forever.

•I'll try that if I run into any issues. Though someone mentioned that Claimyr service earlier which sounds easier than trying to time my calls perfectly.

Daniel Rivera
•Yeah Claimyr definitely takes the guesswork out of calling. You don't have to worry about timing or getting disconnected after waiting on hold.

Remember that your weekly benefit amount might be different than what you expected if you had any earnings during the claim week. They reduce your payment dollar for dollar after the first $5.

PrinceJoe
•I haven't had any work yet so hopefully my first payment will be the full amount.

Angelina Farar
•Good! Just keep that in mind for future weeks if you pick up any part-time work.

The payment should include all the back weeks you were eligible for during adjudication. Mine was a pretty big first payment because it covered like 5 weeks.
0 coins
PrinceJoe
•That would be amazing! I was approved for benefits starting from my original application date, so I should get about 4 weeks of back pay.

Sebastián Stevens
•Yeah that sounds right. Just make sure all those weeks show as 'paid' in your account after you file the weekly claims.

honestly the waiting is the hardest part. once you get that first payment and see the system is working, it gets so much easier mentally

Make sure your mailing address is correct in your account too. Even with direct deposit, they sometimes send important notices that could affect your payments.

•Good point, I should double-check that. I moved recently and want to make sure everything is updated.

If you're really worried about the timing, you could try reaching out to Washington ESD to confirm everything looks good on their end. When I had questions about my first payment, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent quickly. Saved me from spending hours on hold just to ask a simple question.

•Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. I might give that a try if I don't see my payment by the end of the week.

•It's really worth it when you need answers fast. The peace of mind alone was worth it for me.

Just wanted to add - weekends and holidays can delay payments too. If your payment date falls on a weekend, it usually processes the next business day.

PrinceJoe
•Thanks for mentioning that! I need to factor in MLK day next week.
