Just got my 1099-G from Washington ESD last week actually. Came pretty quickly after New Year's. Make sure your address is current in your ESD account so you don't miss it.
Bottom line - yes you need to report it, but it's not the end of the world. Lots of people deal with this every year and there are resources available if you can't pay everything at once. You've got this!
Fun fact: Washington was actually one of the first states to implement its unemployment insurance program after the Social Security Act passed. We started collecting taxes in 1937 and paying benefits in 1938, which was pretty quick compared to some other states.
Your project should definitely mention Title IX of the Social Security Act too - that's the specific section that created the unemployment insurance program. Title II was for retirement benefits, Title IX was for unemployment insurance.
Perfect! I was looking for those specific section numbers. This has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea there were so many people knowledgeable about unemployment history on here.
Final thought - when I talked to the ESD agent through Claimyr, they mentioned that some counties have better partnerships with employers for job placement programs. Might be worth asking about that too when you call.
Thanks everyone for all the advice! I'm going to research King and Snohomish counties more, look into the employment projections data, and definitely try Claimyr to talk to an ESD agent about my specific situation. This has been super helpful.
Let us know if the Claimyr service works out for you too. Always good to hear success stories.
This thread has been super helpful! I'm in almost the exact same situation as OP. Going to file this weekend and see what happens. Thanks everyone for all the detailed info.
One last thing I'll add - be patient with the system but persistent when you need help. Washington ESD is understaffed and overworked, but if you follow the rules and stay on top of your claims, it generally works out. Good luck!

File TODAY. The Washington ESD website says you should file during your first week of unemployment. Don't overthink it - just get the process started. You can always answer questions later if they come up during processing.

•And keep track of all your job search activities from day one, even before your first payment. They can audit your job search log anytime.

Just to add - make sure you're filing in Washington state if that's where you worked. I almost filed in the wrong state when I moved right before getting laid off and that would have been a huge mess to untangle.

•Yeah I'm still in Washington where I worked, so I should be good there.

•Good! Multi-state claims are a whole different headache you don't want to deal with.
