Pro tip: if you're close to the maximum benefit amount, double-check that Washington ESD included all your employers. I had a side gig they missed initially and it bumped me up to the full $999/week.
Just want to add that the benefit amount calculation can be confusing but Washington ESD does provide detailed explanations in your determination letter. Make sure to read through it carefully and keep it for your records.
This thread is really helpful. I got an overpayment notice last month and was too scared to even open it. Now I know I should actually investigate instead of just assuming it's correct.
Been following this thread - really good info here. Washington ESD overpayment calculations are notorious for being confusing and sometimes wrong. Everyone should verify before paying.
One thing to remember is that your weekly benefit amount determines your job search requirements too. Higher benefits usually mean more contacts required per week.
Thanks for all this info everyone. Going to double check my monetary determination now to make sure everything looks right!
At least Washington's unemployment system is pretty well-run compared to some other states. When I needed to file a claim a few years ago, the process was relatively straightforward.
Bottom line - yes it's mandatory, yes it's legal, and yes it's actually a good thing to have even though it feels like just another deduction from your paycheck.

Bottom line: lower interest rates EVENTUALLY help unemployment, but it's not immediate. Keep filing your weekly claims, maintain your job search log, and don't wait for economic recovery to solve your personal situation. Take control of what you can control.

•Agreed. Economics is complicated but your job search strategy should be simple and consistent.

Just want to add that if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions about how economic factors might affect your claim, that Claimyr service really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of trying to get through on my own.
