How to know if I got approved for Washington ESD unemployment benefits
Filed my claim about 2 weeks ago and I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening. I check my account every day but it still just says 'claim under review' or something like that. How do I actually know if Washington ESD approved me? Do they send an email or letter? Should I be getting payments by now? This is my first time filing and I have no idea what to expect or how long this usually takes.

You'll get a determination letter either by mail or through your SecureAccess Washington account. Usually takes 2-3 weeks for a decision on a new claim. Check your account under 'Correspondence' - that's where important documents show up first before they mail them.

•Thanks! I've been checking but don't see anything under correspondence yet. Should I be worried it's taking this long?

•Not really, 2 weeks is pretty normal. If it goes past 3-4 weeks then I'd start making calls to check on it.

•Exactly! I keep refreshing the page hoping something will change lol

•I feel you both. The waiting is the worst part of this whole process.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your status, I used this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, got through to someone within like 20 minutes instead of spending all day hitting redial. They could see my claim status and explain what was happening.

•Hmm sounds too good to be true but if it works...

The approval process involves several steps. First, Washington ESD verifies your identity and employment history. Then they determine if you meet eligibility requirements (job separation reason, work history, etc.). You'll receive a monetary determination showing your weekly benefit amount, then a separate eligibility determination. Both must be favorable for approval.

•So there are actually two different approvals I need to get? That explains why it's taking so long.

Ava Martinez
•Correct. The monetary determination calculates your benefits based on past wages. The eligibility determination reviews why you're unemployed and if you qualify under Washington state rules.

•Wait I thought it was just one decision? This is confusing

UGH the Washington ESD system is SO SLOW! I waited 5 weeks for my approval last year and they acted like that was normal. Meanwhile bills are piling up and you can't plan anything because you don't know if money is coming or not.

•5 weeks?! That's insane. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

Zainab Omar
•They said it was because of high volume but honestly I think they're just understaffed and don't care about people waiting.

•Five weeks is definitely longer than usual. Most people get decided within 3 weeks unless there's an issue with their claim.

been there! the not knowing is worse than actually being denied sometimes because at least then you know where you stand

•Right?? The uncertainty is killing me

Pro tip: if your claim shows 'Pending' status in your account, that usually means it's in adjudication. This happens when they need to investigate something about your separation from work or eligibility. Could be as simple as verifying dates with your employer.

•Mine just says 'under review' - is that the same as pending?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•Yes, that's essentially the same thing. It means they're still processing your claim and haven't made a decision yet.

•mine says pending too but its been 3 weeks now. when should i start worrying?

You should also keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. If you get approved, they'll pay you retroactively for those weeks. If you don't file weekly claims, you could lose those weeks entirely.

Giovanni Colombo
•Oh wow I didn't know that! I haven't been filing weekly because I thought I had to wait for approval first.

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•No, definitely keep filing! Even if your claim is pending, you need to maintain your weekly filing to preserve those weeks for payment.

•Yeah I made that mistake my first time filing. Lost 2 weeks of benefits because nobody told me to keep filing.

tried calling washington esd like 50 times yesterday and kept getting hung up on after being on hold forever. this is ridiculous

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The phone system is basically broken during busy periods.

The determination letter will show your weekly benefit amount, how long you can collect, and any conditions. Make sure you read it carefully because it explains your job search requirements and when to file weekly claims.

Giovanni Colombo
•Good to know. Are there usually conditions attached?
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•Most people have to do job search activities and report them. The letter will specify how many job contacts you need per week.

honestly the whole washington esd website is confusing. took me forever to figure out where to even check my claim status

Giovanni Colombo
•I know right? The navigation is terrible

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•It's under 'View Claim Status' in the main menu after you log into SecureAccess Washington. Not the most intuitive but that's where it is.

Another thing - if you get approved, your first payment usually comes about a week after the determination. They have to process the payment through their system.
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•So there's ANOTHER wait after approval?? This process never ends
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•Yeah but that wait is usually just 3-5 business days, not weeks like the initial decision.

Quick question - do they email you when there's an update or do you have to keep checking manually?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•They'll send notifications for important updates, but you should check your account regularly anyway. Sometimes documents appear before you get notified.

•Thanks, I'll keep checking then

my friend told me to call first thing at 8am when they open but even then the lines are busy. washington esd needs more staff or something

•8am is actually one of the busiest times because everyone has the same idea. I had better luck using Claimyr during off-peak hours.

One more thing - if you're denied, don't panic. You have the right to appeal within 30 days. The appeal process is separate and sometimes overturns the initial decision.
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•Hopefully I won't need to worry about that but good to know there's options if something goes wrong

•I had to appeal my first denial and ended up winning. Sometimes the initial decision is wrong.
