How long does it take Washington ESD unemployment to approve you after filing?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just says 'pending' and I'm starting to get worried. I know they said it could take some time but I really need to know when I might see my first payment. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did it actually take for Washington ESD to approve your claim?

It really depends on your situation. If it's a straightforward layoff with no complications, Washington ESD usually processes claims within 2-3 weeks. But if there's any issue that requires adjudication - like if you quit your job or were fired - it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully it should be straightforward. Thanks for the timeline!

•yeah mine took forever because they had to verify my employment history, even though I had all the paperwork ready

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I filed in November and it took exactly 3 weeks before I saw 'approved' in my account. Then another week before the actual payment hit my bank account.

•So about a month total from filing to getting paid? That's not too bad I guess, just nerve-wracking waiting.

•Mine was similar timeline. The key is making sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending!

If you're really anxious about the status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to Washington ESD on the phone. I used it when my claim was stuck and the agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Interesting, I didn't know there were services like that. Have you used it personally?

•Yeah I used it about 6 months ago when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than trying to call on your own and getting busy signals all day.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment...

The 'pending' status is totally normal, don't panic yet. Washington ESD has to verify your wages with your previous employer and that alone can take 1-2 weeks. Then they review everything and make the determination. 10 days is still within normal range.

•That's reassuring, thank you. I was starting to think something was wrong with my application.

•My employer was slow responding to Washington ESD which delayed my claim by like 3 extra weeks. So frustrating.

Make sure you're logging into your SecureAccess Washington account regularly to check if they need any additional documents. Sometimes they request stuff and if you don't respond quickly it delays everything even more.

•Good point, I've been checking every few days but I'll start checking daily now.

•Yes! And check your messages in the system, not just email. They don't always send email notifications for every request.

ugh the waiting is torture when you have bills due. mine took like 5 weeks because they had questions about why i left my previous job (even though it was obviously a layoff). the system is so slow

•5 weeks?? That would put me in serious financial trouble. Hopefully mine doesn't take that long.

•If there are any complications with the reason you left work, it goes into adjudication which takes much longer. Layoffs are usually much faster to process.

Just want to echo what others said about continuing to file weekly claims. Even though you haven't been approved yet, you need to keep filing or you'll lose those weeks of benefits once you are approved.

•Yes, I've been doing that! It feels weird filing when nothing's approved yet but I read that somewhere too.

•This is super important. I know someone who missed filing for 2 weeks thinking they'd wait until approved and they lost those payments forever.

The whole system is a joke tbh. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. Meanwhile we're out here trying to pay rent and buy groceries.

•I hear you. The stress of waiting when you need the money is awful.

•I understand the frustration but Washington ESD does have to verify everything properly. Fraud prevention unfortunately slows things down for everyone.

For what it's worth, I called Washington ESD last week using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and the agent told me processing times are actually running a bit faster than usual right now. She said most standard layoff claims are getting approved in 2-3 weeks.

•That's encouraging! Thanks for sharing what you learned from actually talking to someone there.

•Yeah Claimyr is great for getting real information instead of just guessing based on what you see online.

Been there. Filed mine on a Monday and got approved exactly 16 days later. First payment showed up 3 days after that. Hang in there!

Ryder Everingham
•16 days isn't too bad at all. Gives me hope mine will be soon!

•That's pretty typical for a clean layoff situation. Sounds like yours should be similar timeline.

Just remember that even when it gets approved, there's usually a one week waiting period before you get your first payment. So factor that in when you're planning your finances.

•Oh right, I forgot about the waiting week. So even after approval there's still another delay.
0 coins
Jasmine Hancock
•Yes, the waiting week is standard for most people unless you have certain special circumstances.

If it makes you feel better, I've never heard of anyone getting denied who was legitimately laid off. It's really just a matter of time for the paperwork to process.

Ryder Everingham
•That does help actually. I keep worrying they'll find some reason to deny me even though I know I qualify.

•The anxiety is real when you're waiting! But yeah, layoffs are pretty straightforward for Washington ESD to approve.

pro tip: if you haven't already, sign up for direct deposit in your account. that way when it does get approved the money hits your bank faster than waiting for a check

•Good call, I set that up when I first filed. Definitely don't want to wait for mail on top of everything else.

I'm in the same boat, filed 8 days ago and just seeing 'pending' still. Reading this thread is making me feel less alone in the waiting game at least.

•Hang in there both of you. The waiting is hard but it sounds like you're both in the normal timeframe.

Whatever you do, don't stop job searching while you wait. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and they can ask for your job search log at any time.

Ryder Everingham
•Definitely been applying to jobs daily. Do I need to keep track of everything I apply to?
0 coins
Jasmine Hancock
•Yes, keep a detailed log of every job you apply for, including the date, company name, and position. You need 3 job search activities per week.

The most frustrating part for me was not being able to get anyone on the phone to just ask about my status. That's why I ended up trying that Claimyr service too - finally got to talk to an actual human who could look at my claim.

Ryder Everingham
•Yeah the phone lines seem impossible. Multiple people here have mentioned Claimyr, might be worth looking into.

•It really does work. I was skeptical at first but when you need answers it's worth it.

Just to set realistic expectations - even though the average is 2-3 weeks, I've seen people wait up to 6 weeks for approval if there are any complications. The important thing is to keep filing weekly claims and looking for work while you wait.
0 coins
Ryder Everingham
•6 weeks would be really tough financially but good to know it can happen. I'll try to prepare for that possibility.

•This is why the system is broken. People shouldn't have to wait over a month to get help when they lose their job through no fault of their own.

For everyone waiting - I know it's stressful but try to stay patient. Washington ESD is actually pretty good about backdating payments to when you first filed, so you won't lose money for the waiting period (except for the one waiting week).
0 coins
Ryder Everingham
•That's good to know about the backdating. At least the waiting doesn't cost me actual benefits.
0 coins
Lilly Curtis
•Exactly, you'll get paid for all the weeks you filed claims once approved, minus just that first waiting week.
