How long does it take to get your unemployment check from Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't received any payment. My claim shows as approved but I'm not sure when I'll actually see money in my account. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so I don't know what's normal. How long does it usually take to get your first check after filing? I'm getting stressed about rent coming up.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim to get your first payment. Have you been filing your weekly claims? You need to do those every week even while waiting for approval.

•Yes I've been doing the weekly claims. Just wasn't sure about the timing for the actual money.

•Make sure you're checking your account regularly too, sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved before payment

The first payment usually takes longer because Washington ESD has to process everything. After that, if you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you should get paid by Wednesday if you have direct deposit set up.

•I do have direct deposit. So after the first one it's pretty quick?

•Yeah, once you're in the system it's much faster. The first one is always the longest wait.

I waited almost a month for my first check last year because my claim went into adjudication. Have you checked if there are any pending issues on your account?

•How do I check for pending issues? I log into my account but don't see anything obvious.

•Look for any alerts or notices in your account. Sometimes there's a section that shows if they need more information from you.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when I couldn't get through on my own.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call but can never get through.

•Yeah it's real, they basically call for you and get you connected. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I've heard of that too, seems like it actually works for people who can't get through the normal way

•Thanks, just worried about bills piling up while I wait

•yeah i know that feeling, had to borrow money from family while waiting

One thing to keep in mind - if there's any issue with your claim like they need to verify your work history or reason for separation, it can delay things significantly. That's when you might need to talk to an actual person.

•This happened to me, had to provide pay stubs and it took an extra 2 weeks

•I provided all my paperwork when I filed, so hopefully no issues there

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and if you don't log them properly it can hold up your payments.

•I've been applying to jobs but didn't know I had to log them somewhere specific. Where do I do that?

Carmen Ruiz
•You can log them in your unemployment account or keep a separate log. Just make sure you have records in case they ask.

•You can also use WorkSourceWA to track your job search activities, that's what Washington ESD recommends

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST!! I've been waiting 3 weeks for my first payment and every time I call I get hung up on. This system is broken.

QuantumQuest
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - couldn't deal with getting hung up on constantly. At least with them I actually got to talk to someone.

•maybe i should try that, this is ridiculous

Also check that your bank account information is correct in your profile. I had a friend who was waiting weeks and it turned out they had an old account number on file.

•Good point, I'll double check that. Would hate for it to be something simple like that.

Usually if your claim is approved and you don't have any pending issues, you should see payment within 2-3 business days of filing your weekly claim. The first one takes longer though because of initial processing.

•This matches my experience. First payment took about 3 weeks, after that it was regular.

•Ok that makes me feel better, sounds like I'm still in the normal timeframe

If you're really worried about the delay, you might want to call and check if there are any issues with your claim. Sometimes they need additional verification and don't always notify you clearly.

•I've tried calling but can never get through. The line is always busy or I get disconnected.

QuantumQuest
•That's the exact problem Claimyr solves - they handle all the calling and waiting so you don't have to deal with busy signals

be patient, it took me almost a month but i eventually got all my back payments at once. washington esd is just slow with new claims

Ethan Brown
•Did you get back pay for all the weeks you were waiting?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Hashemi
•yeah as long as you keep filing your weekly claims you get paid for all of them once approved

One more tip - make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment. If there's any question about your availability, it can delay payments. Keep good records of your job search just in case.

•I am definitely looking for work and available. Should I be worried if I haven't heard anything by week 3?

Yuki Yamamoto
•Week 3 is getting to the longer end but not unusual. If you hit 4 weeks definitely try to get in touch with someone.

Check your email too, sometimes Washington ESD sends notifications there about needed documents or issues with your claim that you might miss if you only check the website.

•Good idea, I'll check my spam folder too just in case

The waiting is the worst part honestly. Once you get your first payment and get into the routine it's much less stressful. Hang in there!

Just to summarize the main points: First payment typically takes 2-3 weeks, keep filing weekly claims, check for any pending issues in your account, and make sure your bank info is correct. If you need to talk to someone and can't get through normally, services like Claimyr can help with that.

make sure you keep all your documentation too in case they audit your claim later. washington esd sometimes asks for proof of job searches or work history months later

Ethan Brown
•I'll make sure to keep everything organized, thanks for the tip

One last thing - if your payment does get delayed for any reason, you'll still get back pay for all the weeks you filed claims. So don't skip filing weekly claims even if you're not getting paid yet.

•Got it, I'll keep filing every week no matter what. Really appreciate everyone's help!

The system definitely has room for improvement but at least once you're in it works pretty consistently. Just that initial wait that's killer.
