When do I receive my first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and it shows approved on my account. I've been doing my weekly claims but haven't received any payment yet. When should I expect to actually get my first check? I'm getting stressed about rent coming up and need to know if there's a typical timeframe for the first payment to hit my account.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you file your first weekly claim to get your first payment. Washington ESD has to process everything and there's always a waiting week for new claims.

•So even though my claim shows approved I still have to wait? That's frustrating but good to know it's normal.

•yeah the waiting week is required by law, they can't pay you for your first week of unemployment

Check your payment history on the Washington ESD website. If you see 'paid' status for your weekly claims, the money should be in your account within 1-2 business days. If it still shows 'submitted' or 'pending' there might be an issue that needs to be resolved.

•Just checked and it shows 'paid' for last week but 'waiting week' for the first one. So I should see money soon?

Carmen Reyes
•Yes, if it shows paid you should see it tomorrow or the next day depending on your bank.

I was in the same situation last month and got so frustrated trying to call Washington ESD to check on my payment status. The phone lines are absolutely impossible to get through. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing exactly how it works. Totally worth it when you need answers fast.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit, I was skeptical too but I was desperate. Got through to Washington ESD within an hour when I'd been trying for days on my own.

•Interesting, might have to try that if I can't get through the regular way

THE WAITING WEEK IS THE WORST PART OF THIS WHOLE SYSTEM! You're unemployed and need money immediately but they make you wait just because. It's like they want people to suffer.

•I get the frustration but the waiting week has been part of unemployment law for decades. It's not just Washington ESD being mean.

•Still doesn't make it right when people are struggling to pay bills

make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your account, had a friend who was waiting weeks because she had the wrong routing number

•Good point, I should double check that. Where do I find the direct deposit settings?

•login to your esd account and look for payment options or direct deposit under your profile settings

Also remember that Washington ESD processes payments in batches. Most people get their money on Tuesday or Wednesday if their weekly claim was processed that week. Don't panic if it doesn't show up on Monday.

•That's helpful to know about the batch processing. I was expecting it to be instant once it showed paid.

•Banking systems take time too. Even after Washington ESD sends the money, your bank might take another day to post it to your account.

I've been unemployed three times in the past five years and each time the first payment takes forever. After that it's pretty regular though. Just that initial waiting period that's brutal.

•Three times? That's rough. At least you know what to expect now I guess.

•Yeah, construction work is seasonal so I'm used to filing claims. The process gets easier but that first payment anxiety never goes away.

What if my claim gets stuck in adjudication after I already filed? Will that delay my first payment even more?
0 coins
Carmen Reyes
•If your claim goes into adjudication, you won't receive any payments until it's resolved. That could take several weeks depending on the issue.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Ugh, hoping that doesn't happen to me. My previous job was a bit complicated with the termination circumstances.

Speaking of adjudication delays, that's another situation where Claimyr really helps. When my claim got stuck, I used their service to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD who could explain what was happening and what documents I needed to submit. Saved me weeks of uncertainty.

•How much does something like that cost though? If you're unemployed money is tight.

Andre Moreau
•I'd rather not get into specific costs but it was worth every penny to get my claim moving again. Way cheaper than missing rent payments.

also check if you signed up for the debit card option instead of direct deposit, sometimes people forget they chose that

•I definitely chose direct deposit but I'll double check my settings just in case.

One more thing - make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even if you haven't received your first payment yet. Missing a weekly claim can mess up your whole payment schedule.

•Yes I've been doing them religiously. Set a reminder on my phone for Sunday mornings so I don't forget.

The anxiety of waiting for that first payment is real. I remember checking my bank account like 20 times a day during my first unemployment period.

•Same here, it's like waiting for Christmas morning except it's your rent money

For future reference, Washington ESD typically processes payments Tuesday through Thursday. If your weekly claim shows 'paid' by Monday, you'll usually see the money by Wednesday at the latest.

•That's exactly the kind of timeline I was looking for. Thank you!

What about holidays? Do they delay payments if there's a federal holiday during the week?
0 coins
Yuki Nakamura
•Yes, federal holidays can delay processing by a day or two. Washington ESD follows federal banking schedules for electronic transfers.

Just want to mention again that if anyone is having trouble getting through to Washington ESD for payment questions, Claimyr really does work. I know it sounds like I'm promoting it but I'm just sharing what helped me when I was in the same frustrating situation.

•I might actually try that next time I need to reach them. The regular phone system is absolutely useless.

•Yeah I looked at their video demo and it seems straightforward enough. Good to know there's an option when the regular lines don't work.

Bottom line is Washington ESD's payment system is slow and frustrating but it does eventually work. Just have to be patient which is hard when you need the money.

Ethan Moore
•Patience is definitely not easy when bills are due, but sounds like I'm on the right track at least.

Remember that after your first payment, subsequent payments should be much more predictable. The initial one is always the most stressful because you're learning the system.
0 coins
Ethan Moore
•That's reassuring to know. Looking forward to having a more predictable schedule once this first payment comes through.
0 coins
Carmen Reyes
•Exactly. Once you get into the rhythm of weekly claims and regular payment processing, it becomes much less stressful.

Good luck with your first payment! The waiting sucks but once it starts flowing it's usually pretty reliable.

Just went through this exact same situation last month. The waiting period is nerve-wracking but totally normal. In my case, I filed my initial claim on a Monday, got approved within a week, did my first weekly claim that Sunday, and then had to wait through the mandatory waiting week. My first actual payment hit my account on a Wednesday about 2.5 weeks after filing. The key thing is to keep doing your weekly claims religiously even while waiting - missing even one can throw off your whole payment schedule. Also double-check your direct deposit info is correct in your account settings. Hang in there, it does come through!
