How to know if you get approved for unemployment - Washington ESD status check
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't gotten any letters or emails about approval or denial. How are you supposed to know if you actually got approved? Do they send something in the mail or does it just show up in your account? I've been checking eServices daily but nothing changes. Really need to know so I can plan my finances.

You'll get a monetary determination letter in the mail within 10-14 days that shows your weekly benefit amount if approved. Your eServices account will also update to show 'Active' status and you'll be able to file weekly claims. The letter is usually the first official notification.

•Thanks! Should I be worried that it's been 2 weeks and no letter yet?

•Mail can be slow sometimes. Check your eServices account - if you can file a weekly claim, you're approved even without the letter.

•Have you tried calling Washington ESD? I know the lines are busy but sometimes they can give you a status update over the phone.

I had the same frustration trying to reach Washington ESD about my claim status. Spent hours calling with no luck until I found Claimyr.com - they actually got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Finally got confirmation that my claim was approved and just needed to wait for the paperwork.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't share your personal info, just help you get through to a real person at Washington ESD.

•I've heard of Claimyr but never tried it. Might be worth it if you really need to talk to someone.

WASHINGTON ESD NEEDS TO FIX THEIR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM! It's ridiculous that people have to guess whether they're approved or not. The online portal should update in real time, not weeks later.

•I agree it's frustrating but the system is probably overloaded. At least they process claims faster than some other states.

•That's no excuse for leaving people in the dark about their financial lifeline.

Here's what to look for to know if you're approved: 1) Monetary determination letter in mail showing your weekly benefit amount 2) Claim status changes from 'under review' to 'active' 3) Weekly claim filing becomes available in eServices 4) You might get a debit card in the mail if you chose that payment method.

Bethany Groves
•This is really helpful! I didn't know about the debit card thing. How long does that usually take?
0 coins
Nathan Dell
•The KeyBank debit card usually arrives 7-10 days after your first payment is processed.

•Wait, do you automatically get a debit card or do you have to request it?

I'm confused about the timeline. Do you get approved first and then file weekly claims, or do you file weekly claims while waiting for approval?
0 coins
KingKongZilla
•You file weekly claims starting the week after you apply, even if you haven't been approved yet. If you get denied, those claims just won't be paid.

Giovanni Martello
•Oh that makes sense. So filing weekly claims doesn't mean you're approved?
0 coins
Nathan Dell
•Correct. You can file weekly claims while your initial claim is still pending review.

Check your spam folder too! My monetary determination letter email ended up in spam for some reason. I was freaking out thinking I got denied.

•Good tip! I'll check that right now.

•Ha! I can see myself doing that too. This whole process makes you paranoid.

If you're really worried about your status, another option is using a service like Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD directly. A friend of mine used it when she was stuck in adjudication and finally got answers about her claim.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. The not knowing is killing me.

•Yeah, she said it was worth it just for the peace of mind. Finally talking to a real person made all the difference.

Pro tip: If your claim gets approved, screenshot everything! I had issues later where the system glitched and showed conflicting information. Having screenshots saved me a lot of headaches.

•That's smart. I'll definitely do that once I know what's happening with my claim.

•Yes! Always document everything with Washington ESD. Their system has quirks.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my mailbox multiple times a day waiting for that letter. You'll get through this!

I got approved but never got the physical letter - it just showed up in my eServices inbox. Check both your mail and your online account messages.

Bethany Groves
•I didn't know there was an inbox in eServices. Where do you find that?

Brandon Parker
•When you log in, there should be a messages or correspondence section. Sometimes notices end up there instead of being mailed.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims while waiting. I made that mistake thinking I shouldn't file until I was officially approved and lost out on benefits.

•Good to know! I've been filing weekly but wasn't sure if I should.

•Yeah, always keep filing. You can't backdate claims if you miss weeks.

The uncertainty is brutal. When I couldn't get through to Washington ESD after days of trying, I ended up using Claimyr and finally got connected to someone who explained my whole situation. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get real answers.

•That's the third person mentioning Claimyr. Maybe I should look into it.

•It's definitely worth checking out their demo video if you're frustrated with not getting through to Washington ESD.

just to clarify - you can be approved for unemployment but still have to wait for adjudication on specific issues. approval doesn't always mean immediate payment
0 coins
Bethany Groves
•Wait, what's the difference between approval and adjudication?
0 coins
KingKongZilla
•Approval means you meet the basic requirements. Adjudication reviews specific issues like why you left your job or if you're able and available to work.

Update us when you hear something! I'm curious how long it takes for your case since we filed around the same time.

The whole system would be so much better if they just sent text updates or email alerts when your status changes. It's 2025, this shouldn't be so mysterious.

•Totally agree. Most companies send you updates for everything these days but not Washington ESD.

If it helps ease your mind, I've never heard of anyone being denied who was legitimately laid off. The approval rate is pretty high for straightforward cases.

Bethany Groves
•That does help! I was laid off due to budget cuts so hopefully it's straightforward.

Been through this process twice now and the waiting never gets easier. But once you get that first payment, the relief is incredible. Hang in there!

Final tip: when you do get approved, set up direct deposit if you haven't already. It's faster than waiting for the debit card to arrive and reload.

•Good call. I'll make sure to do that as soon as I can access those options.
