One last thing - when you file, pay attention to any messages or alerts in your account. Sometimes Washington ESD will ask for additional information and you need to respond quickly or your payments might stop.
Overall the weekly filing process is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Just stick to the Sunday-Tuesday schedule and answer all questions honestly. You'll be fine!
For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I second the recommendation for Claimyr. It's been a lifesaver for getting answers about benefit duration and other questions. Way better than spending hours on hold.
Bottom line: 26 weeks maximum for regular Washington unemployment benefits. Use them wisely and keep looking for work. The time goes faster than you think!
If you need to talk to Washington ESD about tax-related issues with your unemployment benefits, I had good luck using Claimyr to get through. Much faster than trying to call on your own, especially during tax season when everyone's calling with questions.
Bottom line: unemployment withholding is just an estimate. Whether you get a refund or owe more depends on your total tax situation for the year. Washington ESD can't predict that, so they just offer a standard withholding option.
Thanks everyone for explaining this. I understand now that I'll just need to pay the additional amount I owe and maybe plan better for next time.
Quick addition - some credit card companies will let you skip payments entirely for a few months during unemployment hardship. It's not ideal because interest still accrues, but it can buy you breathing room while you figure things out.
Actually got another update from my Washington ESD call - the agent mentioned that if your benefits get extended or if you qualify for additional programs, it can help with creditor negotiations too. Having a longer timeline of expected income helps when asking for extended hardship terms. Really glad I used Claimyr to get that information instead of guessing about my benefit status.
That makes total sense. The more information you have about your situation, the better you can plan. I'm definitely going to look into getting through to Washington ESD properly.

Also be prepared for some paperwork and possible delays. The system is better than it was during COVID but it's still not perfect. Having patience and keeping good records will serve you well.

•Keep copies of everything - your application, weekly claims, job search activities, any correspondence with ESD, pay stubs from your last job, etc.
