How do I know my unemployment claim was approved with Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure if it got approved or not. My online account shows some activity but I can't tell if that means I'm good to go or if I'm still waiting. I've been filing my weekly claims just in case but haven't received any payment yet. What are the signs that your claim actually went through? Should I have gotten some kind of confirmation by now?

You should get a determination letter either by mail or in your online account. Check your SecureAccess Washington account under 'correspondence' - that's where most notifications show up first. If your claim was approved, you'll see a monetary determination that shows your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for.

•I see some letters in there but they're kind of confusing. One says 'monetary determination' - does that mean I'm approved?

Natalia Stone
•Yes! The monetary determination is your approval notice. It will show your weekly benefit amount and total potential benefits.

10 days is pretty normal for processing. If there are no issues with your claim, you should hear back within 2 weeks. Keep filing those weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet - you can backdate them if needed.

•Good to know I should keep filing. I was worried I might be doing something wrong by filing before getting confirmation.

•Nope, keep filing! That's exactly what you should do. Better to have them ready than miss out on benefits.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to check my claim status. Ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works. Really saved me from sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for my benefits.

•It's worth checking out their site at claimyr.com - they focus on the value of actually reaching someone rather than the cost. When you're waiting on thousands in benefits, getting answers quickly matters.

Also look for any notices about adjudication - that's when they need to review something about your claim. If you see 'adjudication in progress' anywhere, that means they're still investigating something and it will delay your approval.

Nolan Carter
•I don't see anything about adjudication, so hopefully that's a good sign.

•No adjudication is definitely good! Means your claim was straightforward.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing... took me forever to figure out where everything was in my account. why cant they just send a simple email that says APPROVED or DENIED???

•I know it's frustrating, but the official letters have important legal language they have to include. Once you know where to look, it gets easier.

•i guess but still shouldnt be this hard to understand if you qualified or not

Update: Found the monetary determination letter and it shows my weekly amount! Thanks everyone. Now I'm wondering why I haven't gotten paid yet if I've been filing weekly claims.

•First payment usually takes 2-3 weeks after approval. There's often a waiting period even after you're approved.

•Also check that you're meeting the job search requirements - 3 job contacts per week. If you're not logging those properly, it can hold up payments.

Same situation here - got my determination letter but no payment yet. It's been 3 weeks since I filed my first weekly claim. Starting to worry something's wrong.

•Check your payment history in the online account. Sometimes there are issues with direct deposit setup or they mail a debit card that gets lost.

•I'll look at that. Maybe I need to update my banking info.

Pro tip: screenshot everything in your account including the monetary determination. I learned the hard way to keep records when dealing with Washington ESD.

•Good idea! I'll start saving copies of everything just in case.

•Yes definitely keep records. I had to appeal something last year and having screenshots saved me.

If you're still having trouble getting clear answers about your claim status, I second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it twice when I couldn't get through the regular phone lines. Really helps when you need to talk to someone who can actually look at your account.

•How quickly were you able to get through with that service?

•Pretty fast compared to calling directly. They handle the wait time for you so you don't have to sit on hold.

Washington ESD approval process is usually pretty straightforward if you have all your info correct. The confusing part is all the different letters and notices they send. Monetary determination = approved, adjudication = under review, disqualification = denied.

•That's a helpful way to think about it. Makes the terminology less intimidating.

Monique Byrd
•Exactly! Once you know what each term means, it's much easier to understand where your claim stands.

I remember being in the same boat - filed my claim and then just stared at the website trying to figure out if I was approved lol. The waiting is the worst part, especially when you need the money.

•Yes! The uncertainty is almost worse than just being denied. At least then you'd know where you stand.

•The good news is once you're in the system and approved, the weekly filing becomes routine.

Another thing to watch for - make sure you're filing your weekly claims by the deadline. In Washington it's usually Saturday night, and if you miss it you have to wait until the next week and might lose that week's benefits.

Nolan Carter
•Good to know about the Saturday deadline. I've been filing on Sundays so I need to change that.

Haley Stokes
•Yeah, definitely file by Saturday evening to be safe. The system usually updates Sunday morning.

Has anyone else noticed that the Washington ESD website is super slow sometimes? Takes forever to load pages when I'm trying to check my claim status.

•Yeah it's pretty bad during peak hours. I usually check my account early morning or late evening when fewer people are online.

•The mobile site is even worse. I just use my laptop now for anything important.

For anyone still waiting on approval - don't panic if it takes a couple weeks. My claim took 12 days to process and that was totally normal. Just keep filing your weekly claims and checking for correspondence.

Nolan Carter
•Thanks for the reassurance. It's good to hear that 12 days is normal.

•Mine took 15 days and I thought something was wrong, but turns out it was just normal processing time.

Quick question - do you get different letters for regular unemployment vs standby? I'm on standby status and not sure if the approval process is the same.
0 coins
Natalia Stone
•Standby claims get similar determination letters but the requirements are different. You don't have to do job searches while on standby with your employer.

Justin Trejo
•That makes sense. I was wondering why my job search requirements looked different.

I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday to check on my claim status and gave up after 2 hours on hold. Might have to try that Claimyr thing people mentioned if I need to call again.

Selena Bautista
•Yeah 2 hours is pretty typical unfortunately. Claimyr definitely helps with that frustration - they handle the waiting so you don't have to.

•I've been there. Sometimes I just hang up and try the online chat instead, but that's not always available either.

One more thing - if your claim gets approved but you have questions about your benefit amount, that's calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The monetary determination should show the breakdown.
0 coins
Nolan Carter
•Mine shows the breakdown but I'm not sure if the amount looks right. Is there a way to double-check the calculation?
0 coins
Sara Unger
•You can appeal the monetary determination if you think it's wrong, but you'd need to provide documentation of your earnings to support your case.

Final update from OP - got my first payment today! Took about 3 weeks total from filing to getting paid. Thanks everyone for the help understanding the process.
