How do I know if I've been approved for unemployment - Washington ESD claim status confusion
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 2 weeks ago and I'm getting mixed signals about whether I'm approved or not. My SecureAccess Washington account shows some payment info but I haven't received any official letter or email saying I'm approved. I can file weekly claims but I'm not sure if that means I'm actually approved? The claim status just says 'active' but I don't know what that means exactly. Has anyone else been confused about this? How do you actually know for sure that your claim has been approved by Washington ESD?

If you can file weekly claims and see payment information in your account, that's usually a good sign. Washington ESD doesn't always send formal approval letters unless there were issues with your claim. Check your account for any determination letters in the documents section.

•I checked the documents section but it's mostly just acknowledgment stuff from when I first filed. No determination letter yet.

•Mine took 3 weeks to get the determination letter even though I was already getting paid. Washington ESD is slow with paperwork.

Active status means your claim is processing but not necessarily approved. Look for a 'Weekly Benefit Amount' on your claim summary page. If there's a dollar amount there, you're likely approved. Also check if you can see a 'Maximum Benefit Amount' - that's another good indicator.

•Yes I can see both amounts! Weekly benefit is $438 and maximum is $11,388. So that means I'm approved?

•Those numbers suggest approval, but keep filing your weekly claims and watch for any issues. Sometimes adjudication can still happen even after initial approval.

I went through this same confusion last month. If you're really unsure, you need to call Washington ESD directly. I know their phone lines are terrible but it's the only way to get a definitive answer. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that service cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks with no luck.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected constantly.

•If you can file weekly claims but haven't been paid, there might be an issue that needs resolution. Check for any alerts or required actions in your account.

•nothing shows up as needing action but no payments either. so frustrating!

Here's what I learned from my experience: Being able to file weekly claims is step 1, but payment is the real confirmation. If you're approved, you should see payments within 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim. If no payment comes, something's holding it up.

•I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday, so I guess I'll know by Wednesday if I'm really approved based on whether I get paid.

•That's exactly right. Payment = proof of approval in my experience.

The Washington ESD system is confusing as hell. I thought I was approved for weeks but turned out I had an adjudication issue that nobody told me about. Finally got through to someone who explained everything.

•How did you finally get through to someone? The phone lines seem impossible.

•Had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Saved me from going crazy trying to call myself.

Pro tip: Look for a 'Monetary Determination' letter in your documents. That's the official approval document. It will show your weekly benefit amount, maximum benefits, and base period wages. Without that letter, you're not technically approved even if you can file claims.

•Still don't have that letter. Should I be worried?

•Not necessarily. Sometimes they're delayed. But if you're concerned, definitely try to reach an agent for clarification.

I'm dealing with the same thing but I think I'm overthinking it. If the system lets you file weekly claims and shows benefit amounts, you're probably good. Washington ESD wouldn't let you file if you weren't eligible.

•That's not always true. I could file weekly claims for a month before they told me I was denied due to a separation issue.

•Oh wow, that's scary. Guess I better try to get confirmation too.

Check your payment method setup too. Sometimes people think they're not approved when really their payment info is wrong. Go to 'Payment Options' in your account and make sure your direct deposit or debit card is set up correctly.

•Good point, I'll double check that. I set up direct deposit when I filed but maybe something went wrong.

The whole system is designed to confuse people I swear. Been through this twice and it's never straightforward. Your best bet is calling but good luck with that lol

•Seriously, why can't they just send a simple email saying 'you're approved' or 'you're not approved'? It's 2025!

•Right?? Instead we get to play detective with our own claim status.

I had this exact same worry. What helped me was looking at the 'Claim Summary' page. If it shows 'Weekly Benefit Amount' and 'Effective Date', you're approved. The effective date is when your benefits started.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
•My effective date shows as the Sunday of the week I filed. Is that normal?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•Yes, that's normal. Benefits typically start the Sunday of the week you file your claim.

Another way to tell: if you log in and see a 'Next Claim Date' that means you're approved and they're expecting you to continue filing. Denied claims won't show future claim dates.

Yuki Ito
•Yes! I do see a next claim date for this Sunday. That's reassuring.

Been getting unemployment for 6 months now. The first few weeks are always nerve-wracking because Washington ESD doesn't communicate well. But if you can file weekly claims and see dollar amounts, you're almost certainly approved. The official letter comes eventually.

•Thanks, that makes me feel better. I'll just keep filing weekly claims and watch for the first payment.

If you're really anxious about it, try calling first thing Monday morning at 8am. Sometimes you can get through faster then. Or use that calling service others mentioned.

•I'll try calling Monday morning. If that doesn't work I might check out the Claimyr thing.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account obsessively for weeks. But sounds like you have all the signs of approval - benefit amounts, ability to file weekly claims, next claim date. You're probably good to go.

Yuki Ito
•Yeah I've been checking multiple times a day. I need to relax and just wait for the first payment.

One more thing - make sure you're doing your job search requirements even if you're not 100% sure you're approved. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

•Good point, I've been logging my job searches just in case.

Honestly if I were you I'd use that Claimyr service just to get peace of mind. Spent way too much time stressing about my claim status when I could have just talked to an agent.

•After reading everyone's responses, I think I'm probably approved but I might try calling anyway just to be 100% sure.

The system shows you what you need to know, just have to learn how to read it. Sounds like you're approved based on everything you described. The anxiety is normal though!
