How soon should I file for Washington ESD unemployment after losing my job?

Just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job due to company downsizing. I'm wondering how quickly I need to file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD? Should I wait a few days to see if they call me back or file immediately? I've never been on unemployment before and don't want to mess anything up. Also not sure if there's a waiting period or if benefits start right away. Any advice would be helpful!

File immediately! There's no benefit to waiting and you could be losing money. Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period anyway, so the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts ticking. Your claim effective date is based on when you file, not when you lost your job.

Thanks! I'll file today then. Do I need any specific documents or can I just start the application online?

You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and bank account info for direct deposit. The online application walks you through everything step by step.

Definitely file ASAP! I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking my employer might rehire me and I lost those two weeks of potential benefits. Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims, so every day you wait is money out of your pocket.

Same thing happened to me last year. Waited thinking it was temporary and ended up missing out on $800 in benefits.

Wow, good to know. Filing today for sure now!

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's been impossible. If you run into issues after filing, there's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true given how hard it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days.

How much does something like that cost though?

File right away but make sure you have all your employer information correct. I rushed through my application and put the wrong dates and it delayed my claim for weeks while they sorted it out during adjudication.

0 coins

What kind of employer information do they need exactly? Just company name and dates?

Company name, address, your supervisor's name if you know it, exact start and end dates, and reason for separation. Be as accurate as possible.

ugh the washington esd system is such a nightmare. took me 3 tries to get my application submitted because it kept timing out. just keep trying if that happens

Try using a different browser or clearing your cache. That fixed it for me when I had the same issue.

Don't wait! I filed the day after I got laid off and I'm glad I did. The whole process takes time anyway - they have to verify everything with your employer and that can take a week or two. Plus you have to do weekly claims every week to get paid.

How do the weekly claims work? Do I have to report job search activities right away?

You'll need to start job searching immediately and keep a log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week minimum.

Actually it's been reduced to 2 job search activities per week for most people now, not 3.

File today! The system is backlogged enough as it is. I filed immediately when I got terminated and it still took 3 weeks to get my first payment because of some adjudication issue they had to resolve.

What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

It's just when they need to verify something about your claim - like the reason you were terminated or your work history. Usually resolves itself but can delay payments.

File immediately but also be prepared for the runaround. Washington ESD is understaffed and overwhelmed. If you need to actually talk to someone, good luck. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth looking into if you get stuck.

I second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it last month when my claim got stuck in pending status and couldn't reach anyone through normal channels.

I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully the filing process goes smoothly.

Whatever you do, don't wait thinking your employer will call you back. Even if they do rehire you later, you can always stop claiming benefits. But if you don't file and they don't call you back, you've lost that time forever.

That makes sense. Better safe than sorry.

0 coins

Exactly! I learned this the hard way when my seasonal job ended and I thought it was just a temporary layoff.

My brother waited 2 weeks to file thinking he might find something quickly and regretted it. File now, keep looking for work, and if you find something before benefits kick in, great! But at least you'll have the safety net in place.

Good point. I'm going to start the application right after I finish reading these responses.

Smart move! The application itself isn't too bad, just make sure you have all your employment info handy.

File TODAY. The Washington ESD website says you should file during your first week of unemployment. Don't overthink it - just get the process started. You can always answer questions later if they come up during processing.

Alright, you've all convinced me. Filing right now. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims on time once you get approved.

And keep track of all your job search activities from day one, even before your first payment. They can audit your job search log anytime.

Just to add - make sure you're filing in Washington state if that's where you worked. I almost filed in the wrong state when I moved right before getting laid off and that would have been a huge mess to untangle.

0 coins

Yeah I'm still in Washington where I worked, so I should be good there.

Good! Multi-state claims are a whole different headache you don't want to deal with.
