How soon should you file for unemployment in Washington - timing question
I got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm wondering about timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I file right away or wait a few days? I heard there might be a waiting period anyway so I wasn't sure if it matters when I submit my application. Also not sure if I need to have all my paperwork ready first or if I can start the process and add documents later. Any advice on the best timing for filing with Washington ESD?

File immediately! There's no benefit to waiting and you want to get your claim date established as soon as possible. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you became unemployed. You can always add missing documents later through your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Thanks! I'll start the application today then. Do I need my last paystubs or can I submit those after I file?

•You can submit paystubs later if needed. The important thing is getting your claim started so your benefit year begins.

Definitely file right away. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I got fired thinking I needed to organize all my paperwork first. Those two weeks were just lost time - I could have been receiving benefits during that period. Washington ESD will tell you what additional documentation they need during the process.

•Wait, so if you file later you lose those weeks of benefits? I thought you could backdate claims?

•You can sometimes backdate but it's not guaranteed and creates complications. Much easier to just file when you first become unemployed.

File today if possible. I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my adjudication issue and finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. But definitely don't wait to file your initial claim - that you can do online right away.

•How much does that Claimyr thing cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay to reach a government agency.

•I hear you on principle, but when you're dealing with bills and can't get through after hundreds of calls, it's worth it to actually talk to someone who can help resolve your claim issues.

File immediately but be prepared for a long wait. My claim has been in adjudication for 6 weeks now and I can't reach anyone at Washington ESD. The system is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. At least get your claim in the queue even if it takes forever to process.

•6 weeks?! That's crazy. Have you tried different times of day for calling?

•I've tried everything - early morning, lunch time, different days of the week. Either busy signal or 2+ hour hold times that end in disconnection.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically unusable for most people.

There's actually a one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits in Washington, so your first week won't be paid anyway. But you still need to file that first week to establish your claim. Don't wait thinking the waiting period means you can delay filing.

•Wait, I thought they eliminated the waiting week during COVID? Is it back now?

•The waiting week was temporarily suspended but it's back now for regular unemployment claims. You still need to file and certify for that first week though.

File right away but make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready. Washington ESD will ask for your last 18 months of work history including employer names, addresses, and dates. Having this ready speeds up the process.

•Good point about the 18 months. I've had a few different jobs in that time so I'll need to gather those details.

•You can estimate dates if you don't remember exactly. They'll verify with employers anyway.

File immediately and start looking for work right away too. Washington requires you to make job search contacts every week and keep a log. Better to start that process early rather than scrambling later to meet the requirements.

•How many job contacts do you need per week in Washington?

Mateo Sanchez
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your account. Some people have different requirements based on their situation.

I filed the same day I got laid off and it was the right choice. Even though there's paperwork to complete later, getting your application date locked in is crucial. Washington ESD uses that date to determine your benefit year and eligibility period.

•Did you have any issues with the online filing system? I've heard it can be glitchy.

•It worked fine for me, but I filed during off-peak hours in the evening. Might be slower during busy times.

File ASAP but be aware that if you receive any severance pay, it might affect your benefit start date. Washington ESD considers severance as wages which could delay when your benefits begin. Still better to file right away and let them sort out the details.

•I did get a small severance package. Should I mention that when I file or wait for them to ask?

Carmen Vega
•Definitely mention it upfront. Being honest about severance prevents issues later and they'll calculate how it affects your benefit timing.

The sooner the better! I waited a week thinking I needed to decompress first and regretted it. That week of benefits was lost and I spent the whole time worrying about money anyway. File immediately and then take your mental health break if you need it.

•This is good advice. The stress of not having income coming in is worse than just dealing with the paperwork right away.

File today! And if you run into issues reaching Washington ESD later, I had success with a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person. The phone system is so backed up that sometimes you need help just to talk to someone about your claim status.

•Is that the one where they call you back when they get an agent on the line? I've seen that mentioned before.

Zoe Stavros
•Yeah, exactly. They handle the waiting and call you when they have an agent ready. Saved me hours of frustration.

File immediately but also sign up for WorkSourceWA if you haven't already. Washington requires you to register for work search activities and it's easier to do this stuff early rather than trying to catch up later when you're already stressed about money.

•Do you have to register with WorkSource before filing for unemployment or can you do it after?

Mei Chen
•You can do it after, but they'll require it eventually so might as well get it done while you're handling all the initial paperwork.

File right away but don't panic if you make mistakes on the application. Washington ESD allows you to correct information and submit additional documents through your online account. The important thing is getting your claim date established.

•That's reassuring. I was worried about messing up dates or employer information.

•They verify everything with employers anyway, so small mistakes usually get caught and corrected during processing.

Definitely file today. I know someone who used Claimyr when they couldn't reach Washington ESD about their pending claim and it really helped them get answers quickly. The regular phone system is basically broken - you either get busy signals or wait hours just to get disconnected.

•I've been trying to call for two weeks with no luck. Maybe I should look into that service too.

•Worth checking out their demo video at least. It's frustrating paying for something that should be free, but when you can't get through any other way...

File immediately and keep records of everything. Save confirmation numbers, print out your application, and document all your communications with Washington ESD. This stuff becomes important if there are any disputes or issues with your claim later.

•Good advice about keeping records. I learned that the hard way with a previous claim.

The day you become unemployed is the day you should file. There's literally no advantage to waiting and potentially significant disadvantages. Washington ESD's system is designed around claim filing dates, so delaying just creates problems for yourself.
