When can I sign up for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim. I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm not sure when I can actually apply for benefits through Washington ESD. Should I wait a certain amount of time or can I file right away? Also wondering if there's a specific day of the week that's better to submit everything. I heard different things from coworkers about waiting periods but want to make sure I don't miss any deadlines.

You can file your initial claim right away - there's no waiting period to submit your application. Washington ESD recommends filing as soon as possible after your last day of work because your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you became unemployed. The sooner you get it in, the sooner your claim can be processed.

•Thanks! So I don't have to wait until I've been unemployed for a week or anything like that?

Oliver Brown
•Nope, file immediately. You'll still have to serve your waiting week but that happens automatically during processing.

Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - previous employer details, dates of employment, reason for separation. The online system at esd.wa.gov walks you through everything step by step.

•Good point, I need to dig up my pay stubs and employment contract.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible. The phone lines are always busy and when you do get through, you get disconnected after waiting forever. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents - they handle the calling and waiting for you. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it worked for me. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get hung up on.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare!! took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and that was WITH everything filed correctly. be prepared for delays and frustration

•Six weeks?? I was hoping to get benefits within a couple weeks to pay rent.

Oliver Brown
•Six weeks is unusual - most straightforward claims process within 2-3 weeks if there are no issues requiring adjudication.

•mine went to adjudication for some reason even though i was clearly laid off due to downsizing. took forever to resolve

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. This starts immediately once you begin filing weekly claims, not after you receive your first payment.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews - there's a list on WorkSourceWA. Keep detailed records of everything.

•And register with WorkSourceWA if you haven't already - that's required within 30 days of filing your claim.

file on sunday if you can, seems like the system is less busy then and processes faster

•The day you file doesn't really matter for processing speed - it's more about getting complete and accurate information submitted.

•maybe just felt that way to me but sunday worked better than when i tried midweek

I filed right after getting laid off and it was the right choice. Even though there's a waiting week, having everything in the system early meant no delays when payments started. Don't overthink the timing - just get it done.

•How long did your whole process take from filing to first payment?

•About 3 weeks total, including the waiting week. Pretty smooth since I had all my paperwork ready.

One thing to remember - your benefit amount is calculated based on wages from your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters. So recent pay increases might not be reflected in your weekly benefit amount.

Honorah King
•That's confusing - so they don't use my most recent salary?
0 coins
Lorenzo McCormick
•Right, they use an earlier period to calculate benefits. There's an alternate base period option if your recent wages were significantly higher, but that requires special circumstances.

Update - I tried that Claimyr thing and it actually worked! Got connected to an ESD agent within 2 hours instead of calling for days. They were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

•That's awesome! What was the issue with your claim?

•Turned out they needed additional verification of my employment dates. Something I could have resolved weeks ago if I'd been able to talk to someone.

Don't forget about the weekly claims! You have to file every week even if your initial claim is still processing. Miss a week and you won't get paid for that week even if you're eventually approved.

•When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?

Dananyl Lear
•Yes, you'll get instructions after filing your initial claim. Weekly claims are due by midnight on Saturday for the previous week.

•And be honest on your weekly claims about any work or income - even small amounts need to be reported.

I made the mistake of waiting a week before filing because I thought I needed to be unemployed for a certain period first. Cost me that extra week of benefits since your benefit year starts when you file, not when you were laid off.

Honorah King
•Good to know! I definitely don't want to lose any potential benefits by waiting.

•Yeah, learn from my mistake. File as soon as you can get your paperwork together.

also be prepared for identity verification stuff. they're really strict about that now and it can delay everything if you don't have the right documents ready

Honorah King
•What kind of identity verification do they require?

Carmella Popescu
•driver's license, social security card, sometimes they want additional stuff through ID.me verification

Just a heads up that if you were fired for misconduct or quit without good cause, you might not be eligible. Make sure you understand your separation reason and how it affects your claim.

Honorah King
•I was laid off due to company downsizing so that should be fine, right?
0 coins
Ana Rusula
•Yeah, layoffs due to lack of work are usually straightforward for eligibility. Just be accurate about the reason when you file.

The waiting week is something people don't always understand. You serve it during your first week of filing weekly claims, but you don't get paid for that week. It's just part of the process.
0 coins
Honorah King
•So I won't get paid for my first week even if I qualify for benefits?
0 coins
Fidel Carson
•Correct, the first week is unpaid for everyone. Your payments start with the second week if you're eligible.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you file online. Save confirmation numbers, print your application summary, keep records of all your submissions. You'll need them if there are any issues later.

•Good advice! I'll make sure to document everything.

•Trust me, having those records saved me when they claimed they never received my job search log submission.

If anyone else is struggling to get through to ESD, I'll second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication and couldn't get answers any other way. Worth it just for the peace of mind.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money being unemployed.

•It's really reasonable considering how much time and stress it saves. Check their website for current info.

Remember that your employer gets notified when you file for unemployment. They can contest your claim if they disagree with your stated reason for separation, which could lead to an adjudication process.
0 coins
Honorah King
•Should I be worried about that? We parted on good terms and it was clearly a layoff.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•If it was genuinely a layoff due to lack of work, you should be fine. Employers usually only contest when they think someone quit or was fired for cause.

Nalani Liu
The key is being completely honest and accurate on your application. Any discrepancies between what you report and what your employer reports can cause delays and require adjudication to resolve.

•Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. I'm going to file my claim today.

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims on time and keep looking for work. The system works if you follow the rules.

One last thing - if you do run into problems or need to speak with someone at ESD, don't give up. The phone system is frustrating but there are people there who can help resolve issues once you get through to them.

Ayla Kumar
•Or use Claimyr like I did and skip the phone system hassle entirely!

•That's definitely an option too. Whatever gets you the help you need.

Bottom line - file as soon as you can after becoming unemployed, be honest and complete in your application, keep good records, and stay on top of your weekly claims. Most people who do that have a relatively smooth experience with the system.
