What day do I file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and I'm trying to figure out when I should file my unemployment claim. I've heard different things from coworkers - some say file right away, others say wait until Sunday. Does it matter what day I file with Washington ESD? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits. Also, once I file, when do I start doing the weekly claims? I'm really confused about the timing of everything.

You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait - there's no benefit to waiting until Sunday or any specific day. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you became unemployed, not when you filed. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed.

•Thanks! So I can file today even though it's only been a few days since I lost my job?

Emily Nguyen-Smith
•Yes, absolutely. File today if you can. The waiting period starts from your last day of work, not from when you file the claim.

I made the mistake of waiting a week to file thinking I needed to wait. Big mistake - just delayed everything. File ASAP and then you'll get instructions about when to file your weekly claims.

•How long did the delay cost you? I'm in the same boat as OP and worried about timing.

•Probably cost me about $800 because I waited a week to file. Don't make my mistake!

Here's what you need to know: File your initial claim immediately. After that, you'll file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week. So if you file your initial claim today, you'll start filing weekly claims this coming Sunday. The key is getting that initial claim in the system ASAP.

•Perfect, that makes sense. So initial claim now, then weekly claims every Sunday going forward?

Mia Green
•Exactly right. Washington ESD will send you instructions after you file your initial claim explaining the weekly filing schedule.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file (their phone system can be brutal), I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful for me.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and can't get through.

Emma Bianchi
•Yeah it's legit. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I might try that if I can't get through online. Thanks for the tip!

•There's still a waiting week, but that's built into the system. You still want to file your claim immediately so the waiting week can start counting.

•oh ok that makes sense, so file now but dont expect money for the first week anyway

I filed mine on a Tuesday and it was fine. Day of the week doesn't matter for the initial claim. What matters is getting it filed quickly after your separation date. Washington ESD will backdate to your last day of work anyway.

•Good to know! I was overthinking the timing aspect.

•Same here - I was worried about filing on the 'wrong' day but it really doesn't matter.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - social security number, employer addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation. Having everything organized will make the process go smoother.

•I have most of that info. Do I need my paystubs or just the basic employment details?

ApolloJackson
•You'll need your paystubs for the weekly claims, but for the initial filing just have the basic employment info ready. Keep those paystubs handy though.

The Washington ESD website is actually pretty good for filing online if you can't get through by phone. I filed mine at like 2 AM when I couldn't sleep and it went through fine.

•Online is definitely the way to go. Much easier than trying to call during business hours.

•I'll try online first then. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - you file your INITIAL claim any day, but your WEEKLY claims are always filed on Sundays. Don't confuse the two like I did at first.

•Thanks for clarifying that! I was getting confused about the difference.

•Yes, that's super helpful. Initial claim ASAP, weekly claims on Sundays. Got it!

Pro tip: if you're filing online, do it during off-peak hours. The system gets overloaded during lunch breaks and evenings when everyone's trying to file.

•What would you consider off-peak hours? Early morning?
0 coins
Chloe Delgado
•Early morning or late evening work best. Avoid 12-2 PM and 5-7 PM when everyone's trying to access the system.

I was in the same situation last month. Filed on a Wednesday and everything worked out fine. The main thing is just getting it filed - don't stress about the specific day.

•How long did it take for your claim to be processed?

Ava Harris
•About 2 weeks from filing to getting my first payment. Pretty standard timeline.

Make sure you keep track of your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and you'll need to report those activities on your weekly claims.

Edison Estevez
•Do I need to start job searching immediately or can I wait until my claim is approved?
0 coins
Jacob Lee
•Start immediately. You need to be able and available for work from the time you file your claim. Keep a log of all your job search activities.

If you run into any issues with Washington ESD not responding or your claim getting stuck, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is actually pretty helpful. I used it when my claim went into adjudication and I couldn't get answers.

•Did it help resolve your adjudication issue?

•Yeah, they got me connected to an agent who explained what was happening and what I needed to do. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

One more thing - make sure you're honest about your reason for separation. If you were laid off, say laid off. If you quit, say quit. Being dishonest will just cause problems later.

•I was definitely laid off due to downsizing, so that's straightforward. Thanks for the reminder though!

Washington ESD has gotten much better with their online system over the past few years. I remember when it was nearly impossible to file online, but now it's pretty smooth.

Remember that even if you file today, there's still a waiting week before benefits start. But that waiting week counts from your last day of work, not from when you file, so don't delay filing thinking you need to wait.

•Got it - file now, waiting week is automatic. Thanks for explaining that clearly!

Natalie Chen
•Exactly right. The waiting week is built into the system automatically.

If you need help navigating the Washington ESD website, they have pretty good tutorials on their site. Helped me when I was filing for the first time.

•I'll check those out. Any particular sections you'd recommend looking at first?

•Start with the 'How to File' section. It walks you through the whole process step by step.

Just want to echo what others have said - file ASAP, don't wait for any particular day. I filed on a Friday afternoon and it went through fine. The system processes claims continuously, not just on certain days.

One last tip - after you file, you'll get a confirmation number. Write that down and keep it safe. You might need it later if there are any issues with your claim.

Edison Estevez
•Good point, I'll make sure to save that confirmation number. Thanks!

•Yes, definitely keep that confirmation number. I had to reference mine when I called about a payment issue.
