What day do I file for unemployment with Washington ESD - timing question

I got laid off yesterday (Thursday) and I'm trying to figure out when exactly I should file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Do I file right away or wait until a specific day? I've heard different things about timing and I don't want to mess this up. Also once I file the initial claim, what day of the week am I supposed to file my weekly claims? This is my first time dealing with unemployment so any guidance would be appreciated.

You should file your initial unemployment claim as soon as possible after your separation from work. Don't wait! Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, and there's a waiting week anyway. For weekly claims, you'll get assigned a specific day based on your SSN - they'll tell you which day when you complete your initial application.

Thanks! So I can file today even though I just got laid off yesterday? I wasn't sure if there was some waiting period.

0 coins

Yes, file today! The sooner the better. Your claim effective date will be the Sunday of the week you file, so don't delay.

0 coins

just file asap, i waited like a week thinking i needed to and it screwed me over

0 coins

Oh no, how did waiting a week hurt you?

0 coins

lost that first week of eligibility basically, could have started my claim earlier

0 coins

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I filed my claim last month. Spent hours on hold just to ask basic questions about my application. If you run into the same problem, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration trying to reach someone.

0 coins

Is that legit? I've never heard of using a service to call Washington ESD for you.

0 coins

Yeah it's real, they basically get you connected to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are swamped. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

I might need to try that, I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck

0 coins

For weekly claims, Washington ESD assigns you a filing day based on the last digit of your Social Security Number. Sunday is for SSN ending in 0-1, Monday for 2-3, Tuesday for 4-5, Wednesday for 6-7, Thursday for 8-9. You can file on your assigned day or any day after, but not before. Make sure you file every week even if you haven't received your first payment yet.

0 coins

This is super helpful! My SSN ends in 7 so that would be Wednesday. Can I file later in the week if I miss Wednesday?

0 coins

Yes, you can file Wednesday through Saturday for that week. Just don't miss the cutoff or you'll lose that week's benefits.

0 coins

wait i thought you could file any day after your assigned day? i've been filing on fridays even though my day is tuesday

0 coins

You can file after your assigned day within the same week, but it's better to file on your assigned day to avoid any issues.

0 coins

DONT WAIT TO FILE!!! I made this mistake and it cost me. The system is already backed up enough without you adding delays. File your initial claim immediately and then follow the weekly schedule they give you.

0 coins

Got it, filing today for sure. Thanks for the emphasis!

0 coins

Same thing happened to me, every day you wait is potentially money lost

0 coins

The weekly filing schedule is based on your SSN but honestly the Washington ESD website is pretty clear about this once you get your claim set up. The main thing is just getting that initial claim filed ASAP like everyone else said.

0 coins

Good to know the website explains it clearly. I was worried it would be confusing.

0 coins

Yeah once you're in the system it's pretty straightforward, just that first step of filing can be intimidating

0 coins

also make sure you have all your info ready when you file - social security card, drivers license, employment history for the last 18 months, reason for separation, etc. dont want to start the application and then have to stop to find documents

0 coins

Good point, I should gather everything first. Do I need pay stubs?

0 coins

not necessarily for the initial filing but good to have them handy in case they ask for verification later

0 coins

Washington ESD will request wage verification if needed, but having your employment dates and employer info ready is most important for the initial claim.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment for 3 months now and I file every Tuesday (my assigned day). The key thing to remember is that you're filing for the PREVIOUS week, not the current week. So when you file on Tuesday, you're claiming benefits for the week that just ended on Saturday.

0 coins

That makes sense, so I'm always filing for the week behind. Thanks for clarifying that!

0 coins

this confused me so much at first, i thought i was filing for the upcoming week

0 coins

Just to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - if you do run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone (which you probably will), that service really does work. I was skeptical at first but after spending literally days trying to get through on my own, it was worth it to just get connected quickly when I needed to check on my claim status.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money being unemployed.

0 coins

It's pretty reasonable considering how much time and stress it saves you. Check their website for current pricing.

0 coins

I used Claimyr too when I couldn't get through about my adjudication issue. Definitely saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

File today! I can't stress this enough. I waited 3 days thinking I needed to 'process' being laid off emotionally and it was such a stupid mistake. Every day counts with unemployment benefits.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely not waiting. Going to file as soon as I finish reading these responses.

0 coins

same mistake here, thought i needed to wait until the following monday or something

0 coins

One more thing - make sure you understand the work search requirements before you start filing weekly claims. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log. Don't skip this or they can disqualify you for benefits.

0 coins

3 job contacts per week? Like applying for 3 jobs or just contacting employers?

0 coins

Job applications, networking contacts, job fairs, etc. Check the Washington ESD website for the full list of what counts as a valid work search activity.

0 coins

They're pretty strict about this too, keep good records of your job search activities

0 coins

just wanted to say this thread is super helpful! i'm in a similar situation and was confused about the timing too

0 coins

Glad it's helpful for you too! Seems like the timing question comes up a lot.

0 coins

definitely, wish i had found info like this when i first filed

0 coins

To summarize the key points: 1) File your initial claim immediately, don't wait. 2) Your weekly filing day depends on your SSN last digit. 3) You file for the previous week, not the current week. 4) Keep up with work search requirements. 5) Have your employment history and documents ready when you file.

0 coins

Perfect summary, thank you! I think I have everything I need to get started now.

0 coins

This should be pinned somewhere, these are the exact questions everyone has when they first file

0 coins

Agree, these basics trip up so many people new to the unemployment system

0 coins

Another tip - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication (which happens more often than it should), that's when you'll really need to contact Washington ESD. The phone lines are brutal but that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually got me through to resolve my adjudication issue in like 20 minutes instead of days of calling.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim goes through smoothly.

0 coins

adjudication is the worst, mine took 6 weeks to resolve and i couldn't get anyone on the phone

0 coins

make sure you also sign up for WorkSourceWA if you haven't already, its required for unemployment benefits in washington

0 coins

Is that separate from the unemployment application? I haven't heard of WorkSourceWA.

0 coins

yeah its a separate website but washington esd requires you to register there for job search stuff

0 coins

WorkSourceWA registration is part of the work search requirements. You'll need to create a profile there and use it to track some of your job search activities.

0 coins

The waiting week is probably the most confusing part for new filers. You file immediately but there's still a waiting week before you can receive benefits, and you have to keep filing weekly claims during that waiting week even though you won't get paid for it.

0 coins

So I file weekly claims during the waiting week but don't get paid for that week? That seems confusing.

0 coins

Exactly, you still have to file to show you're available for work, but the first week is unpaid. It's like a deductible.

0 coins

this tripped me up too, i thought something was wrong when i didn't get paid for the first week

0 coins

good luck with your claim! the system can be frustrating but once you get into the routine of weekly filing it becomes pretty automatic

0 coins

Thanks! I feel much more prepared now after reading everyone's advice.

0 coins

yeah this thread covered all the basics really well

0 coins

One last thing - save confirmation numbers and take screenshots of everything when you file online. Washington ESD's system can be glitchy and you want proof you filed on time if there are any issues.

0 coins

Great advice, I'll definitely keep records of everything. Thanks to everyone who responded!

0 coins

screenshots saved me when they claimed i missed a weekly filing, had proof i submitted it

0 coins

always keep receipts with government systems, learned that the hard way

0 coins

this has been really helpful to read through, washington esd process seems overwhelming at first but breaks down into manageable steps

0 coins

Exactly! It seemed so complicated but everyone's explanations made it much clearer.

0 coins

The key is just taking it one step at a time and not getting overwhelmed by all the requirements at once.

0 coins

hope your claim goes smoothly! remember to file immediately and then just follow the weekly schedule they give you

0 coins

Will do! Filing my claim right now actually. Thanks again everyone!
