What day to file unemployment claim with Washington ESD - timing questions

I got laid off this past Friday and I'm trying to figure out when exactly I should file my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Some people are telling me to file right away, others say wait until Sunday or Monday. Does the day I file affect my benefit week or when I get paid? I don't want to mess this up and lose money or have delays. Also confused about whether I should file for the week I got laid off or wait until the following week. Any advice would be really helpful!

You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. Washington ESD doesn't pay you for the week you file (that's your waiting week), but filing early ensures you don't lose any potential benefit weeks. The day of the week you file doesn't matter for your initial claim.

So I can file today even though I just got laid off Friday? I won't lose any benefits by filing early?

•

Exactly right. File today if you can. The sooner you file, the sooner Washington ESD can process your claim and determine your weekly benefit amount.

I filed mine on a Tuesday and it didn't matter at all. What matters more is making sure you have all your employment info ready - dates of employment, employer addresses, reason for separation, etc. That stuff will speed up your application way more than worrying about what day to file.

Good point about having the info ready. I should probably gather all my pay stubs and employment records before I start the application.

0 coins

Yes definitely do that! I had to stop halfway through because I didn't have my previous employer's exact address and it was frustrating.

Just went through this myself last month. Filed on a Wednesday, no issues. One thing that helped me was using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent when I had questions during the process. Way better than trying to call the regular number and getting hung up on. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service but honestly anything that helps you actually talk to someone at Washington ESD sounds worth it. The phone system is impossible.

Interesting, I'll check that out. Getting through to Washington ESD by phone has always been a nightmare when I've tried before.

The timing thing is confusing but here's what I learned - your 'claim week' runs Sunday to Saturday regardless of when you file your initial application. So if you got laid off Friday, you can file your initial claim anytime but your first payable week would start the Sunday after your waiting week.

Wait so there's a difference between filing the initial claim and filing weekly claims? I'm getting more confused now.

•

Yes exactly. Initial claim is the big application where you provide all your work history. Weekly claims are what you file every week to actually get paid. You file weekly claims on Sundays for the previous week.

This is why I hate the unemployment system, it's so needlessly complicated. Why can't they just make it simple?

To clarify the weekly claim schedule - Washington ESD's benefit week runs Sunday through Saturday. You file your weekly claim on Sunday for the week that just ended. Your first weekly claim will be filed the Sunday after your waiting week ends.

•

Okay so if I file my initial claim today, when would I file my first weekly claim for benefits?

Ava Harris

•

If you file today and this coming Sunday starts your waiting week, you'd file your first weekly claim two Sundays from now for benefits.

honestly just file it already, stop overthinking it. i filed mine on a random thursday and everything worked out fine. washington esd doesnt care what day you file as long as you file within a reasonable time after losing your job

You're probably right, I'm definitely overthinking this. Just nervous about messing something up.

totally understandable to be nervous, unemployment stuff is stressful. but yeah just get it filed and you'll feel better

One more tip - when you do file, make sure to write down your confirmation number and keep track of everything. Washington ESD's system can be glitchy and having records helps if something goes wrong with your claim later.

Good advice. Should I print out the confirmation page or just write down the number?

I'd do both honestly. Print it if you can, screenshot it, and write it down. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

I remember being so confused about this too. What helped me was calling Washington ESD directly but that was a nightmare until I found out about Claimyr. They actually got me through to someone who explained the whole timeline clearly. Worth the money just for the peace of mind.

How much does that service cost? Might be worth it if it saves me hours of trying to get through on the phone.

I don't remember exactly but it wasn't too expensive for what you get. Way cheaper than the stress of not knowing if you're doing everything right.

The whole system is set up to confuse people I swear. I filed on different days for different claims over the years and it never mattered. What matters is having your social security number, employment history, and being honest about why you lost your job.

Makes sense. I was laid off due to company downsizing so that should be pretty straightforward to explain.

Layoffs are usually the easiest type of claim to process. You shouldn't have any issues as long as you have the documentation.

Just file it online at secure.esd.wa.gov and be done with it. I wasted so much time worrying about the perfect timing when I should have just filed immediately. You can't go back in time and file earlier, but you can definitely file too late and miss out on benefits.

You're absolutely right. I'm going to stop worrying and just file it today. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Good call! Once you get it filed you'll feel so much better. The waiting is the worst part.

Make sure you also register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. They'll want you to be actively looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities.

Chloe Delgado

•

Oh right, I forgot about the job search requirements. Do I need to start that immediately or can I wait until after I file?

0 coins

Michael Green

•

You should register pretty soon after filing, but you don't have to start the job search activities until your waiting week is over I believe.

Ava Harris

•

That's correct. Job search requirements kick in after your waiting week, but registering with WorkSource early is a good idea.

i had to refile my claim last year and used that claimyr thing someone mentioned. honestly it was amazing being able to actually talk to a human at washington esd instead of just getting busy signals all day. they walked me through the whole process

That's the third person who's mentioned it, maybe I should check it out. The website is claimyr.com right?

Mateo Silva

•

yep thats it. they have a video that shows exactly how it works too

Here's something nobody mentioned - make sure your direct deposit info is correct when you file. I messed that up and it delayed my first payment by two weeks while they sorted it out. Small detail but important!

Great tip! I'll double check my bank account and routing numbers before submitting.

Yes! And if you don't have direct deposit set up, do that instead of waiting for a debit card. Direct deposit is way faster.

The day doesn't matter but I always recommend filing on a weekday if possible. If you run into technical issues or have questions, it's easier to get help during business hours than on weekends.

Chloe Delgado

•

That's smart thinking. I'll file this afternoon while I can still call if I need help.

Good plan. Even though the system is available 24/7, having support available if you need it is definitely better.

Update us after you file! Always curious to hear how the process goes for people. Washington ESD has made some improvements to their online system recently so hopefully it's smoother than it used to be.

Will do! Thanks again everyone, this has been super helpful. Going to file right now.

Good luck! You've got this. The hardest part is just getting started.
