When should you file unemployment with Washington ESD - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and I'm not sure about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I file the day I get laid off, or wait until the following week? I've heard conflicting advice from coworkers - some say file immediately, others say wait until you're actually unemployed. I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits. Also, do I need to have my final paycheck already deposited before I file? Any guidance would be appreciated.

File your claim the week you become unemployed, not before. If your last day of work is Friday, you can file that weekend or the following Monday. Don't wait longer than that though - you want to get your claim in as soon as possible after your employment ends.

•Thanks! So if I'm laid off on Friday the 10th, I should file that weekend or Monday the 13th?

•Exactly. File on or after your last day of work, but don't delay unnecessarily.

I made the mistake of filing too early once and had to restart the whole process. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this - your claim date has to be on or after your last day of work.

•Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare. How long did it take to fix?

•About 2 weeks of back and forth with them. Not fun when you need the money.

Here's what I learned from my experience - file your initial claim as soon as possible after your last day of work, but be aware that your first weekly claim will be for the week AFTER your last day of work. So if you're laid off Friday, you'd file your first weekly claim the following Sunday for that week.

•This is confusing. So there's the initial claim AND weekly claims? Can you explain the difference?

AstroAdventurer
•Initial claim establishes your eligibility and benefit amount. Weekly claims are what you file every week to actually get paid. You can't file weekly claims until after your initial claim is processed.

•And don't forget you have to wait one week before you can get benefits anyway - that's the waiting week.

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I had timing questions about my claim. Kept getting busy signals and hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

•I've never heard of that. Is it legit? I'm worried about getting scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it worked for me.

FILE ASAP AFTER YOUR LAST DAY!!! I waited two weeks thinking I needed to 'settle in' to being unemployed and it just delayed everything. There's no benefit to waiting.

•Got it, thanks for the emphasis! I'll file that weekend for sure.

•Same here, I waited thinking I might find a job quickly. Big mistake.

Also make sure you have all your employment information ready - dates of employment, reason for separation, employer contact info. Washington ESD will need to verify everything with your employer before approving your claim.

•Do I need my final pay stub before filing?

Zoe Papadakis
•Not necessarily for the initial filing, but it's helpful to have. They'll ask about your wages from the last 18 months.

•I had to dig up old pay stubs from like 15 months ago. Keep everything!

Don't forget about the job search requirements too. You'll need to start looking for work immediately and keep a log of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, even LinkedIn networking can count. Just keep detailed records.

I filed on a Sunday night and it went through fine. The website is usually less busy on weekends so it might actually be better than trying during business hours.

•Good tip! I'll try Sunday evening then.

•Yeah the website crashes a lot during peak hours. Weekends are definitely better.

Question - if you get severance pay, does that affect when you can file? I'm getting 2 weeks severance and I'm not sure if I have to wait until that runs out.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•You can still file your claim, but severance might affect your benefit amount or create a waiting period. Washington ESD will calculate how it impacts your benefits.

Andre Rousseau
•I'm not getting severance thankfully, so I don't have to worry about that complication.

Make sure you know your employer's FEIN number too. Washington ESD asks for it and if you don't have it, you might have to call them to get your claim processed.

Andre Rousseau
•What's a FEIN number?

Sofia Hernandez
•Federal Employer Identification Number. It's on your W-2 or pay stub usually.

I remember being so nervous about filing. Turns out it's pretty straightforward once you get started. The hardest part is just getting through if you need to call them with questions.

•Yeah I'm definitely nervous about the whole process. Thanks for the reassurance.

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr when I needed to talk to someone. Way less stressful than trying to get through on your own.

One thing to remember - even if you file right away, there's usually a waiting period before you get your first payment. Don't expect money immediately.
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•How long is the waiting period usually?
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•There's a one week waiting period, plus it takes time to process your claim. Plan for 2-3 weeks minimum before seeing money.

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything when you file. The system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof of what you submitted.

Andre Rousseau
•Great advice! I'll definitely do that.

•This saved me once when they said they never received my claim. Had screenshots to prove I filed it.

If you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months, make sure you file in the right state. Washington ESD might not be the right place if most of your wages were earned elsewhere.

Andre Rousseau
•I've only worked in Washington, so I should be good there.

•Perfect then. Washington ESD is where you want to file.

Don't overthink it. File as soon as you're unemployed and answer all the questions honestly. The system is designed to help people who qualify.

If you run into any issues during the application process, don't give up. Sometimes the website is slow or you get error messages, but keep trying.

Last thought - start thinking about your job search strategy now. Washington ESD will require you to be actively looking for work, so having a plan helps.

•That's smart. I'll start updating my resume and LinkedIn profile this week.
