How long until I can file for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Do I need to wait until my last day of work or can I file beforehand? Also heard something about a waiting week - does that still exist? I want to make sure I don't mess up the timing and delay my benefits. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so any guidance would be appreciated.

You can file your initial claim the Sunday after your last day of work. So if Friday is your last day, file that Sunday. Don't file before your employment actually ends or Washington ESD will deny your claim. The waiting week was eliminated during COVID and hasn't been brought back.

•Thanks! So I should wait until Sunday to file online? Is there any benefit to filing earlier in the week vs later?

•Sunday is the earliest you can file. Filing earlier in the week doesn't really matter for processing time, but I always recommend Sunday so you don't forget.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready - last employer's name, address, your wages, reason for separation. Washington ESD will ask for all of this during the application process.

•Good point. Should I get any documentation from my employer before I leave?

•Get a copy of your final paystub and any separation paperwork they give you. You'll need the exact dates and wage information.

Be prepared for potential delays in getting through to Washington ESD if you need to call them. The phone system is overwhelmed most days. I spent weeks trying to reach someone about my claim status. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Is that service legit? I've never heard of using a third party to call Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. They basically just navigate the phone system for you and get you connected to an actual person. Saved me hours of calling.

•I was skeptical too but used Claimyr when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of waiting on hold forever.

DONT FILE TOO EARLY!! I made this mistake and filed before my last day thinking I was being proactive. Washington ESD denied my claim and I had to start over. Cost me like 3 weeks of benefits.

•Yikes, that's exactly what I was worried about. So definitely wait until after the last day of work?

•Yes! Wait until your employment is completely over. I learned the hard way.

The online system at secure.esd.wa.gov is usually pretty straightforward for filing. Just make sure you have a good internet connection and about 30-45 minutes to complete the whole application. Don't rush through it.

•How long does it typically take to hear back after filing?

•If everything goes smoothly, you should get your monetary determination within a few days. First payment usually takes 2-3 weeks if there are no issues.

Also remember you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Mark your calendar for Sundays - that's when the weekly claims open up.

•Do I file weekly claims right away or wait until my initial claim is approved?

•Start filing weekly claims the week after you file your initial claim, even if it's still processing. You don't want to miss any weeks.

•What happened when you filed wrong? Did you have to start over?

One more tip - if you're getting severance pay, that might affect when you can start collecting unemployment. Washington ESD treats severance differently depending on how it's paid out.

Norman Fraser
•I am getting two weeks severance. Does that mean I have to wait longer to file?
0 coins
Kendrick Webb
•Not necessarily. You can still file your claim, but Washington ESD will factor in the severance when calculating your benefit start date. Be sure to report it accurately.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. Washington ESD requires you to actively look for work and keep a log of your job search activities.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Nadia Zaldivar
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your individual requirements. Could be applications, interviews, networking events, etc.

The whole system is a mess honestly. Took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because of some adjudication issue they never explained properly.

•That's terrifying. How did you finally get it resolved?

Lukas Fitzgerald
•Had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to actually get through to a person. Regular calling was hopeless.

Don't forget to register with WorkSource Washington too. It's required for unemployment benefits and they have job search resources.

•Is that something I do before or after filing for unemployment?

Ev Luca
•You can do it either way, but I'd recommend doing it soon after filing your claim. Washington ESD will eventually require it anyway.

Been there. Just remember the key date is your last day of work. Everything else builds from there. File the Sunday after, start weekly claims the following week.

Norman Fraser
•That's a helpful way to think about it. Thanks for simplifying the timeline.

I always tell people to take screenshots of everything when filing. If something goes wrong, you'll want proof of what you submitted and when.

Norman Fraser
•Good idea. The confirmation numbers and stuff like that?
0 coins
Collins Angel
•Yes, confirmation numbers, the date you filed, all the information you entered. Just in case there are any disputes later.

Also be aware that if your claim gets flagged for any reason, it could go into adjudication which can take weeks or even months to resolve.

Norman Fraser
•What kinds of things cause adjudication?

Marcelle Drum
•Could be anything - questions about why you were laid off, wage discrepancies, previous unemployment claims. Sometimes it's random.

honestly just prepare for frustration. the system works but its not user friendly and customer service is basically non-existent unless you get lucky

•That's what I keep hearing. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst I guess.

One more thing about Claimyr - they're really helpful if you run into any issues after filing. I had to use them twice, once for my initial claim questions and once when my payments stopped randomly. Both times they got me connected to Washington ESD agents who could actually help.

•Good to know there's a backup option if the regular phone system doesn't work out.

The waiting is the worst part. Even when everything goes right, it's still like 2-3 weeks before you see any money. Budget accordingly.

Norman Fraser
•Yeah, I'm trying to save up some money before my last day to cover that gap period.

Make sure your address is current in all your records. Washington ESD sends important notices by mail and if you miss something it can delay your benefits.

Norman Fraser
•Good point. I'll double check my address is updated everywhere.

File online if at all possible. The phone system for filing claims is even worse than calling for help. Online is much more reliable.

•Yeah, I was planning to use the website. Sounds like that's definitely the way to go.

Good luck! The whole process is stressful but most people do get through it eventually. Just be patient and keep good records of everything.
