When can you file unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. Can I file right away or do I need to wait? My HR department wasn't very clear about this and I want to make sure I don't mess up the process. Also worried about the waiting week - does that still exist? I've never filed for unemployment before so any guidance would be helpful.

You can file your claim the Sunday after your last day of work. Washington ESD recommends filing as soon as you're eligible because there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start. So if Friday is your last day, file that Sunday to get the process started.

•Thanks! So I don't have to wait until I've been unemployed for a full week before filing?

•Nope, file right away. The waiting week is built into the system - you'll file weekly claims but won't get paid for the first week.

Just make sure you have all your info ready - social security number, employer details for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. The sooner you file the better.

•Good point about the 18 months of employer info. I've only had this one job for the past 2 years so that should be straightforward.

I tried calling Washington ESD last month to ask the same question and could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•How does that work exactly? Is it legit?

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Interesting, might have to try that if I run into issues with my claim.

The key thing is to file immediately when you become unemployed. Don't wait thinking you need to be unemployed for a certain period first. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, and delays can mean delays in payments.

•This is correct. I made the mistake of waiting a week before filing thinking I had to, and it just delayed everything unnecessarily.

•Got it, filing that Sunday for sure. Thanks everyone!

also remember you have to be available for work and actively searching. They'll ask about job search activities when you file your weekly claims.

•How many jobs do you have to apply to each week?

Sasha Reese
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, interviews, etc. Keep good records.

Don't forget about the WorkSource registration requirement too. You'll need to register with WorkSourceWA within a certain timeframe after filing.

•When do I need to do that by?

•Usually within the first few weeks. The system will prompt you when it's required. Don't stress about it initially, just focus on getting your claim filed first.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. I filed 2 weeks ago and still don't understand half of what they're asking for in the weekly claims.

•What part is confusing you? The weekly filing is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

•mainly the job search stuff and what counts as 'available for work' - like if I have a doctors appointment does that make me unavailable?

Sasha Reese
•No, routine appointments don't make you unavailable. You're considered available as long as you're ready and willing to accept suitable work during normal business hours.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov if you can. Way easier than trying to call or go in person.

•Is the online system pretty user-friendly?

•It's decent. Takes about 20-30 minutes to complete the initial application if you have all your info ready.

Make sure you file in the right state! I know someone who worked in Oregon but lived in Washington and filed in the wrong state initially. Caused a huge mess.

•I work and live in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

One thing to watch out for - if your employer contests your claim it can delay everything. Hopefully that won't happen with a layoff situation but just be prepared for potential complications.

•Why would they contest a layoff? That seems weird.

•Sometimes there are disputes about the reason for separation, but layoffs are usually pretty clear cut. You should be fine.

I've been on unemployment twice and both times I filed the day after my last day of work. Never had any issues with timing. The waiting week is automatic so don't worry about that part.

•Same here. Filed immediately both times and it worked out fine.

If you run into problems getting through to Washington ESD by phone, definitely check out that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I used it last year when my claim got stuck in adjudication and needed to talk to someone urgently. Worth every penny to avoid the phone hell.

•How much does it cost?

Marilyn Dixon
•I don't remember the exact amount but it was reasonable considering the time and frustration it saved me. Way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

Just to be super clear - you file the claim for the week you become unemployed. So if Friday is your last day, that's the week you file for, even though you worked most of it.
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
•That makes sense. And then I file weekly claims every week after that?
0 coins
TommyKapitz
•Exactly. You'll file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week. Miss a week and you could lose benefits for that week.

Good luck with everything! The process is intimidating at first but it's really not that bad once you get started. The key is just filing as soon as you're eligible.

•Thanks! Feeling much more confident about the timing now. Really appreciate everyone's help.

One last tip - take screenshots or write down confirmation numbers when you file. Sometimes the system glitches and having proof you filed can save you headaches later.
