When do I apply for unemployment Washington ESD - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. Should I apply right after my last day of work or wait? I heard there's some kind of waiting period but I'm not sure how that works. Also do I need to have all my paperwork ready before I start the application or can I gather it as I go? Really stressed about getting this right since I need the benefits ASAP.

Apply as soon as possible after your last day of work! Washington ESD doesn't pay for the week you file (that's the waiting week) but you want to get your claim started right away. The sooner you file, the sooner your weekly benefit amount gets calculated.

•So if I get laid off Friday should I file that same day or wait until the following week?

•File that Friday or over the weekend. Don't wait - every day you delay is money lost since benefits are backdated to when you file, not when you lost your job.

You can start the application without having everything ready. Washington ESD will tell you what documents you need during the process. But definitely have your employer info handy - company name, address, your supervisor's name, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

•That's a relief! I was worried I needed tax forms and pay stubs before even starting.

•Nope, just basic info to get started. They might ask for wage verification later if needed.

Just went through this myself last month. Filed my claim the day after my last day and it took about 2 weeks to get approved. The hardest part was actually reaching someone at Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status.

•Did you have trouble getting through on the phone? I keep hearing the lines are always busy.

•Oh man, I must have called 200+ times over several days trying to get through. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me so much time and frustration! They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything beats sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected

THE TIMING IS CRITICAL!!! Don't wait even one extra day to file. I made that mistake and lost out on a week of benefits because I thought I should wait until Monday to file on a 'business day'. WRONG. File immediately after your last day of work, even if it's a weekend or holiday.

•Wow okay that's good to know! I definitely don't want to lose any money by waiting.

•Same thing happened to me - waited 3 days and those were 3 days I couldn't get back

Make sure you understand what counts as your 'last day of work' too. If you're getting severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when your unemployment actually starts. Washington ESD has specific rules about this.

•I am getting 2 weeks severance - does that mean I can't collect unemployment for those 2 weeks?
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
•You still need to file your claim right away, but you'll report the severance on your weekly claims. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your benefits. Don't delay filing just because of severance.

•Exactly what they said - file immediately regardless of severance. The system will sort out payment timing but you need to get your claim in the system ASAP.

•It's not about how long it takes, it's about making sure I do it at the right time so I don't mess up my benefits

•Timing IS complicated when you're dealing with your livelihood. Better to ask questions than lose money.

One more thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about those or you'll have gaps in your payments. Set a reminder on your phone for the same day each week.

•Good point! What day of the week should I file the weekly claims?

Keisha Taylor
•You can file weekly claims Sunday through Saturday for the previous week. Most people do Sunday or Monday. Pick a day and stick with it.

Been collecting unemployment for 6 months now and my advice is file immediately but also start job searching right away. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do check. Don't wait to start looking until your benefits get approved.

•What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Applications, networking events, career fairs, updating your resume with a professional, attending workshops. Check the WorkSourceWA website for all the options.

File right away but don't expect fast processing. My claim went into adjudication and took 6 weeks to resolve. Had to call repeatedly to get updates and that's when someone told me about Claimyr - wish I'd known about it sooner.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening to my claim?

•It's when they need to investigate something about your claim - like if there's a question about why you left your job. Doesn't always happen but when it does, it delays everything.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov as soon as possible after your last day. Have your Social Security number, employer information for the last 18 months, and banking info for direct deposit. The system is usually faster at night or early morning when fewer people are using it.

•Thanks for the website link! Should I file late at night then to avoid crashes?

•I filed mine at like 6 AM on a Sunday and it went through smoothly. Peak times can be slow or buggy.

honestly the whole system is a mess, took me 3 tries to get my application to go through without error messages, then weeks to get approved, then had to fight about my job search requirements... but yeah file immediately because delaying just makes everything worse

Yara Khoury
•Ugh that sounds frustrating. Did you eventually get it sorted out?

•Yeah but only after multiple phone calls and using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier to actually reach an agent who could fix the problems.

File ASAP and keep detailed records of everything - when you filed, confirmation numbers, every communication. You'll thank yourself later if any issues come up.

•Good idea! I'll screenshot everything as I go through the process.

The waiting week thing confused me too when I first filed. You don't get paid for your first week of unemployment but you still need to file that weekly claim. It's just how the system works in Washington.

Yara Khoury
•So I file for the first week but don't get paid for it? That seems weird.
0 coins
Omar Zaki
•Exactly. It's like a one-week deductible. You'll get benefits starting from your second week if approved.

Quick update on the Claimyr service I mentioned - I used them again last week when I had questions about extending my benefits and got through to Washington ESD in under 10 minutes. Definitely worth checking out if you run into issues reaching them directly.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day trying to reach them. Plus they actually get you to someone who can help instead of just giving you the runaround.

File immediately but also be prepared for the process to take time. Even straightforward claims can take 2-3 weeks to get your first payment. Don't panic if it's not instant.

Yara Khoury
•That's actually reassuring to know it normally takes a few weeks. I was expecting it to be faster.

Make sure you have a good email address that you check regularly. Washington ESD sends important notifications by email and if you miss them it can delay your claim.

Yara Khoury
•Good point! I'll use my main email address, not my work one that's about to get deactivated.

Been through this twice unfortunately. Both times I filed the day after my last day and had no issues with timing. The key is just don't overthink it - file as soon as you're unemployed.

•Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds like the consensus is definitely to file right away.

Set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account ahead of time if you haven't already. That way you're ready to file immediately when the time comes instead of dealing with account setup when you're already stressed about being unemployed.

Yara Khoury
•Oh that's smart! I can do that right now actually. Thanks for the tip!

•Exactly! One less thing to worry about when you're dealing with job loss.

To wrap this up - file immediately after your last day of work, have your employer info ready, don't worry about having every document perfect, and start your job search right away. You've got this!
