When can you file unemployment claim in Washington ESD - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my Washington ESD unemployment claim. Should I wait until my last day of work or can I file beforehand? Also heard something about a waiting week - does that still exist? Really confused about the whole process and don't want to mess up my claim by filing too early or too late.

You can file your claim the Sunday after your last day of work. Don't file before your employment actually ends or Washington ESD will deny your claim. The waiting week was eliminated in 2020, so you should get paid for your first week if you're eligible.

•Thanks! So if my last day is Friday, I should file that Sunday?

Sofia Price
•Exactly. File your initial claim on Sunday, then do your first weekly claim the following Sunday for that first week.

Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify everything anyway.

•What if my employer disputes the claim? I'm worried they might say I was fired for cause even though it's clearly a layoff.

•Then it goes to adjudication and Washington ESD will investigate. Keep any documentation about the layoff - emails, notices, etc.

The key thing is filing as soon as you're eligible because benefits are paid from the date you file, not from when you lost your job. I waited two weeks to file mine and lost out on those payments.

•Wait, they don't backdate benefits? That seems unfair if you didn't know about the timing rules.

•Nope, Washington ESD only pays from your claim effective date forward. That's why timing matters so much.

•Good to know! I definitely don't want to lose any weeks of benefits.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD after you file, there's actually a service called Claimyr that can help you reach an agent. They handle the calling process for you - saved me hours of busy signals. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

also remember you have to do job searches starting right away! washington esd requires 3 job contacts per week now, not sure if they told you that part

Mateo Warren
•Wait what? I have to start looking for work immediately? I thought I had some time to figure things out.

Sofia Price
•You need to be able and available for work from day one. The job search requirement is 3 contacts per week unless you're in an approved training program.

File online through the Washington ESD website, not by phone. The phone system is a nightmare and you'll just waste hours trying to get through.

Mateo Warren
•Is the online system pretty straightforward?

Julia Hall
•Yeah it's not too bad. Just have your Social Security card and employment history ready.

Don't forget about the work search log! You have to keep track of every job you apply for, where you applied, date, contact info, etc. Washington ESD can audit this anytime.

Mateo Warren
•How detailed does this log need to be?
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•Pretty detailed - company name, position, date applied, method of contact, any follow-up. Better to have too much info than not enough.

•I got audited last year and they wanted everything. Luckily I kept good records or I would have been disqualified.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I filed 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten a penny. Washington ESD is completely useless and nobody answers the phones.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Sometimes you really need to talk to someone to resolve these issues.

•I'll try anything at this point. Can't pay my rent with promises.

Make sure your claim doesn't get stuck in adjudication. Mine did for 8 weeks because my previous employer reported conflicting information about my separation date.
0 coins
Mateo Warren
•How do you prevent that from happening?

Ella rollingthunder87
•Be really specific and accurate about dates and circumstances. Any discrepancy triggers an investigation.

can you file if you quit your job or only if you get fired/laid off?
0 coins
Sofia Price
•You can file if you quit for good cause - things like harassment, unsafe working conditions, significant changes to your job. But the burden of proof is on you.

Yara Campbell
•what counts as good cause exactly?

Sofia Price
•Each case is different but generally documented safety issues, harassment, substantial reduction in hours or pay, or hostile work environment.

I filed mine on a Tuesday instead of Sunday and it was fine. Don't stress too much about the exact day as long as it's after your employment ends.

•Same here, filed on Wednesday and no issues. The Sunday thing is more of a guideline.

Mateo Warren
•That's reassuring. I was worried about messing up the timing.

Watch out for the maximum benefit amount - it's based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. If you weren't making much, your weekly benefit might be pretty low.
0 coins
Mateo Warren
•How do they calculate the base period?
0 coins
Tami Morgan
•It's the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, they look at January-December 2024.

Does anyone know if part-time work affects your benefits? I might be able to pick up some freelance work while collecting.
0 coins
Sofia Price
•You can work part-time but you have to report ALL earnings. They'll reduce your benefits dollar-for-dollar after you earn more than 25% of your weekly benefit amount.
0 coins
Rami Samuels
•So if my weekly benefit is $400, I can earn $100 without any reduction?
0 coins
Sofia Price
•Exactly. Anything over $100 gets deducted from your $400 benefit.

Remember to file your weekly claims every week even if you're in adjudication or waiting for your claim to be processed. If you don't file weekly, you won't get paid for those weeks even if your claim is eventually approved.

Mateo Warren
•Even if I haven't heard anything back from Washington ESD yet?
0 coins
Haley Bennett
•Yes! Keep filing weekly claims no matter what. You can't go back and claim weeks you didn't file for.

The whole system is designed to discourage people from filing. They make it as complicated and confusing as possible.

Nina Chan
•It's frustrating but once you get through the initial process it gets easier. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

Douglas Foster
•IF you can get through the initial process. That's a big if.

I used Claimyr when my claim got stuck and they were able to get me connected to someone who could actually help. Worth it when you're dealing with Washington ESD's phone system.

Mateo Warren
•How quickly were you able to get through?

Ruby Knight
•They got me connected within a few hours instead of me spending days trying to call.

Make copies of EVERYTHING you submit to Washington ESD. I had to resubmit documents twice because they claimed they never received them.

Mateo Warren
•Good tip! I'll make sure to keep copies of all my paperwork.

•Also take screenshots of your online submissions. I've had things disappear from my account.

One more thing - if you have any questions about your eligibility, it's better to file and let Washington ESD determine if you qualify rather than assuming you don't and not filing at all.
0 coins
Mateo Warren
•That makes sense. Better to try and get denied than not try at all.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•Exactly. The worst they can do is say no, but if you don't file you definitely won't get anything.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Sounds like I should file this Sunday after my last day on Friday and make sure to keep doing the weekly claims even if it takes time to process.

•You've got it! And don't hesitate to reach out here if you run into any issues during the process.

•And remember about Claimyr if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Sometimes that's the only way to get things resolved quickly.
