When can I file for unemployment benefits in Washington - timing questions?
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Do I need to wait until after my last day of work to file with Washington ESD, or can I file before? Also heard something about a waiting week - does that still exist? Really stressed about making sure I don't mess up the timing and delay my benefits. Any advice on when exactly I should submit my initial claim?

You can file your initial claim the Sunday after your last day of work. Don't file before your employment actually ends or Washington ESD will reject it. The waiting week was eliminated during COVID and hasn't come back, so you should get paid for your first eligible week.

•Thanks! So if my last day is Friday, I should file that following Sunday?

•Exactly right. File online at esd.wa.gov that Sunday and you'll be good to go.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation. Washington ESD needs all that stuff when you file.

•Good point, I'll gather my pay stubs and employment letter this week.

Actually had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I filed last year to ask timing questions. Kept getting busy signals for days. If you run into that issue, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•Totally legit - check out claimyr.com. It's not free but way better than spending all day redialing. Got me connected in like 20 minutes.

•Might be worth bookmarking in case I have issues. Thanks for the tip!

timing is everything with unemployment!! i filed too early once and had to start over. such a pain

•That happened to my sister too. Washington ESD is really strict about the employment end date.

One more thing - even though you file Sunday, you'll still need to file your first weekly claim the following week. Don't forget that step or you won't get paid.

•Weekly claims are separate from the initial application?

Gabriel Graham
•Yes, the initial claim just establishes your benefit amount. You have to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments.

•This confused me so much when I first filed. The system should explain it better.

Wait I thought there was still a waiting period? My neighbor said she had to wait a week before getting benefits.

•No waiting week in Washington anymore. Your neighbor might be confusing it with the processing time, which can take a few days.

•Oh that makes sense. She probably meant processing delay, not a waiting week.

Pro tip: file early in the morning on Sunday if possible. The website gets really slow later in the day when everyone's trying to file.

•Good to know! I'll set an alarm for early Sunday morning.

Make sure you're actually eligible before filing. If you quit your job instead of getting laid off, there are different rules and you might not qualify right away.

•I'm definitely being laid off, not quitting. Got the official notice already.

•Perfect, then you should be good to go with the Sunday filing plan.

also remember to keep filing weekly even if ur claim is pending or under review. dont stop filing or you lose those weeks

•This is really important advice. Even if Washington ESD is reviewing your claim, keep filing weekly or you forfeit those benefit weeks.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication after you file (which happens a lot), that's another time when calling Washington ESD becomes crucial. That's when I really appreciated having Claimyr to help get through the phone lines.

•What's adjudication exactly? Keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

•It's when Washington ESD needs to review your claim for some reason - could be verification of your job separation, wages, or eligibility. Can take weeks sometimes.

The whole system is so confusing for first-timers. I wish Washington ESD had better guidance on their website about timing and process.

•Agreed! That's why I'm asking here instead of trying to figure it out from their website.

One question - if I file Sunday but my employer contests it, what happens? Do I still get benefits while they figure it out?

Gabriel Graham
•Usually yes, you get benefits while Washington ESD investigates. But if they determine you weren't eligible, you'd have to pay it back.

•Good to know. Hopefully my employer won't contest since it's a legitimate layoff.

Don't forget you'll need to start doing job searches right away too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

•Do I need to start job searching immediately or is there a grace period?
0 coins
Drake
•You need to start job search activities for any week you're claiming benefits. No grace period anymore.

The key thing is just don't overthink it. File Sunday after your last day of work, file weekly claims every week, do your job searches, and you should be fine.

Just to wrap up the Claimyr discussion - I know some people are skeptical about paying for help, but when you're dealing with delayed benefits and can't get through to Washington ESD, sometimes it's worth it. The service really does work.

•I'll definitely keep it in mind if I run into phone issues. Hopefully I won't need it though!

Final reminder: Sunday after your last day of work, file online at esd.wa.gov, then file weekly claims every week after that. You've got this!

This thread was really helpful for me too. I'm in a similar situation and wasn't sure about the timing either.

•Glad it helped! The timing question comes up a lot, so you're definitely not alone in being confused.

One last thing - keep records of everything. Screenshot confirmations, save emails, print important pages. Washington ESD's system can be glitchy sometimes.

•Great advice! I'll definitely document everything as I go through the process.

Gabriel Graham
•Yes! Having documentation saved me when there was a system error that deleted some of my weekly claims.
